"If i just start music videos right now with the knowledge that i have, i would definitely rent before purchasing" The reason you have the knowledge that you have is because you purchased your gear. Think about all the time you have spend extra, trying new stuff out, maybe even doing shoots for free or last minute shoots you wouldnt be able to do if you had to rent first. And i didn't even mention the fact that a lot of times the things you want to rent are already rented out. When it comes to bigger shoots, yes renting makes more sense because it is also calculated in the budget. But if you are starting out, saving up money, buying your first camera and actually making nice projects with it just hits different. It makes you wanna go extra hard. I remember when i was finally able to buy a BMPCC4K when it just released. At some point i was dreaming about buying an Ursa G2 one day. 3 years later i was able to buy an Ursa G2. Maybe im also biased cuz i dont like going trough to process of renting stuff.

You hit it right on the head if you’re just starting how in the hell will you get better if you’re renting out equipment you can be great that way because of the things you’ve stated also with doing music videos you have clients that are last minute that will contact you a day or two before they want to shot & it might take 3-4 days to get the equipment you missed out on a client because of it
@insayno
@insayno Жыл бұрын
@@darealphantom Yup, if i didn't have my own gear, i would not be able to do 80% of all my gigs. A lot of things are indeed last minute or on inconvient times. For instance, a few friends of mine are DJ's. Sometimes they ask me to film and make their aftermovies. Those are in the middle of the night. There is no renting place open by that time.

@@insayno exactly! I just wanted to add on to your point because YC said some good information maybe people just need to know not to break the bank when first starting out buy used learn your tools make money then upgrade too many people going into debt for equipment get frustrated, depressed and quit
@YCImaging
@YCImaging Жыл бұрын
Yeah i'm not saying don't buy any gear, i'm saying buy what you can afford. A lot of creators now are going broke on setups that they don't need for the rate they're charging, just rent when those bigger projects come around.

perfect timing for this video. I just recently filmed my first professional music video. and Im so glad I seen this video because now I know what to do and the way to approach I for the next video/film. I agree with documenting because I started vlogging almost 3 years ago and I feel like if you go back to your old videos that's where you can see where you grew, and see how far you came. it also kinda tells your story for the outsiders.

6:56 - i dont document myself. I let others document me. I do the same in music production aswell as film making. I just do me and do what I think looks good. Ill try new things, ill try different light set ups, ill go away from the "oRaNgE aNd TeAl" color grades and just kinda make my own mood and if the people around me say "dude! This looks way better than your last project!" Thats my meteric i got off of that im getting better.

I’ve owned the a6400 and the black magic 6K. I enjoyed shooting with the a6400 more. Was more fun, had more features in my opinion. I’ve sold all my equipment, going on about 3 years now. Definitely regret it. But this is my first time watching YC (or any other content creator) again since about 3 years ago when I sold my equipment. I definitely regret that I did, but coming back to YC’s channel years later, I feel like a rookie all over again taking notes and I love it. 😂💪🏾

Just used Mmusic 2 on a music video which was run n gun (which I hate), but I loved how your plugin transformed some boring shots into a VHS story. Thank you! Since I started watching your youtube, started investing more into Lighting then into anything else. I highly recommend Amaran line from Aputure. Its crazy that Amaran 300c is much less expensive than Aputure 120d II and it is 2x more powerful and RGB. I very excited for filmmaking industry with these prices drops. Thank you for the video! 🙏🏼🇨🇿

Renting is kool but , the good thing in owning equipment is as soon as you get an idea you can try things, test things, learn the equipment to the fullest. Renting equipment, you have to already know how to use it unless you're renting the equipment days in advance to get experience with it. But its surely better to own it especially if its something you're going to continiously use.

Sometimes buying just seems easier as long as its obtainable. Buying the red komodo definitely paid off. But I wish I rented my a7siii before buying because I may have went with a canon 🤔

I bought my Fx3 and it came yesterday. I honestly dont care for clients i just wanted to make my own conematic stuff, my own travel stuff, b-rolls, and if i make my miney back thats nice if not i am also fine with it because i bought this gear to use it for personal use and not for making a million bucks lol…I wanted something that wont break my bank account but it will give me some nice images and cinematic stuff that can be used for anything. So yes FX3 is something i want to use for personal use.

Only thing I can say about pricing is when you charge a number clients don’t like they just leave you on read 99.9% of the time, I’ve been countered maybe 4 times in 5 years shooting videos, but I do agree, shoot for the moon

Yep had the same problem at first. Change over to a hourly payment like $15 an hour and start a timer when you leave the house for the shoot and end when you’re back home. Do the same for editing and there’s ur price

Charge what you’re worth. How many hours put into the pre, prod and post, doesn’t mean anything for a client if the result is shit or/and if the DP is a beginner. Gotta start somewhere. I’d rather suggest doing videos being in a team of rappers and beat makers. Share the costs, share the work load, a rap group can help out with carrying lights etc. Sometimes a band gets into the media business instead when they found out that their real skill was/is how they make a song look, rather than how the lyrics and beats get noticed by the listeners.

Great advise. I used to work on Music video's in the early 80 when we shot on film when the gear were way out our price range. Cause I had a friend that worked at a rental house, I rented 75% gear for pretty much most project. Now today I have a nice set up but I only bought the Camera and some photo lens everything else I rent cause I don't shoot everyday.

Disagree with renting. Started out renting and it was a huge money pit and it's a pain in the ass. Not to mention the most important part, unfamiliarity. Saying i get this dream job as a newbie videographer where someone is willing to actually pay for gear. (This isn't realistic imo already for people that are relatively new. Say you do get this job, you rent a red komodo. You have no idea how to work it. You find out later that your computer can't handle editing anything you filmed, you've never used the camera, CFAST cards, record format, editing the footage. It makes more sense to invest in a nice camera and lenses to own. Maybe not a Arri Alexa 35mm. But invest in a cheap cinema camera that can compete with modern ones like a Black Magic URSA.

YC do you have any tips for exporting for youtube? I put together a test video for a friend I'm shooting a video for it and it looks so much more noisy and compressed in the shadows on youtube than it does watching it directly off my computer. I'm shooting on a T7i so I know it's dynamic range isn't great but the footage looks so much more crisp before being uploaded to youtube even though I've tested multiple methods from different tutorials I've watched and I'm not sure what else I can do .. I could even link you the unlisted video if you want to see what I mean.
