I spent 7 years at U of T getting a BA and a MA, and I second this video. It's a great university. You should take advantage of your professor's office hours and the writing centers at different colleges. It is a competitive school, but that competition will help excel in your career path. It's been 5 years since my graduation, and I have not found a job more difficult than being a U of T undergrad.

Daniel Jung would you say you found your masters at U of T easier than your bachelors? In terms of competition, marking, drop out rates etc
@danieljung3312
@danieljung3312 4 жыл бұрын
@@liannaxiao1651 Those are great questions! For me personally, yes, I did find MA a bit easier and less competitive! But, I think that maybe because I knew exactly what I want to do. Grad school is a different game rather than being a more difficult game. Since the population is much smaller in grad school, I don't think the drop-out rate matters. In grad school, everyone has a lot of passion for their research, but people still drop-out for many reasons. People will usually have a serious talk with their potential advisor a few months before, or after, beginning their program. If they choose to stay after this serious talk, they usually make it until the end of MA. If you choose to do an MA, be sure to do a thesis or an MRP, rather than just finishing it through course work. I will do a longer video series on these if/ when I choose to become a KZbinr.

Daniel Jung thank you that’s really helpful! I’m actually starting my Masters in Teaching program at U of T in September, so I’m guessing it’ll be quite a bit different haha. But I just got nervous from all the things I’ve heard from my undergrad friends about how hard undergrad is at U of T and how high drop out/major switching rates were! Fingers crossed that they’re not trying to weed people out as much in Masters 😅😅

Gr. 12s - last point's really important!!! the program you choose isn't set in stone. You aren't forced to pursue anything for the rest of your academic career, or even life (an example of negative all-or-nothing ideation). Course, program switches are normal and easier than you think!

I'm in 10th grade and I always wanted to study abroad. To be honest, I heard about U of T from Anne with an e 😂 but anyways I knew Canada would be an amazing place to study at. When I snooped around to know how U of T was, I was so scared and frightened from how intense it sounded and how the administration won't care about you and how you'd have no life except studying and stuff like that. I was dreadful of it, and I didn't want to make a wrong descion if I were to apply to it. I'm the only one in my family that's going to college and the pressure is already on me because of that. But this video gave me some hope and reassured me, so thank you so much for shedding some light, and who knows? Maybe in 2 years I'll be a U of T student!!!

This is so accurate! I just finished my first year. I was also indecisive. I switched around courses so many times and even changed from social science to life science. I always looked at UofT as this big scary place. It is big- but there is so much flexibility and support. This is especially true because of how the university is divided into campuses and colleges. It feels a lot smaller once you’re there.

I appreciate your honesty and transparency with debunking the murkiness in the U of T atmosphere. This is certainly not one of these videos in which people try to sugarcoat or mask the real challenges with lofi hip hop running in the background, by trying to make everything look pretty and sunshine. Please keep it up. Truth may be hard but at least we all get a chance to hear the truth rather than be protected or shunned from it. After exams everything just HIT ME LIKE A BUS 🚌 if anyone is planning to go to uofT, even the Mississauga Or Scarborough campus, put in the work, u will never have a breeze experience and pls take advantage of office hours, I didn’t take much advantage of it and I regret it, they do help and any student can swear on that! UofT is a great school and if you plan to go there, take advantage of opportunities and definitely having friends is helpful to help one other! You will find friendly and helpful people and create great friendships! PUT IN THE WORK EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE GIVING UP because first year goes by fast! this is my advice as a student that finished first year❤️

How difficult is neuroscience at u of t? I’m a high school senior thinking of studying neuroscience so what can I expect?
@natalieeeeeeeeeee97
@natalieeeeeeeeeee97 4 жыл бұрын
@@salsaglitter5976 hey! Honestly it wasn't too bad but you should constantly do readings a week before your lecture (i.e. chapter 1 a week before you start, chapter 2 you start on week one, chapter 3 on week 2) so that way if you ever are too busy, at least you'll be on top of your readings. Classes are decent but you'll have profs that like to use trick questions so be very particular with the wording and answer what you think is best. Have your workload evenly spread out over both semesters such as having 2 hard classes and 2-3 easy ones each sem so that way you aren't overworking yourself. Check "rate my prof" for opinions on profs when choosing which classes you want to take. Most of your questions will be in the syllabus so definitely read that before emailing profs (they hate repeating themselves). Labs (bio and chem which are mandatory for neuro) can sometimes be overwhelming so read up on the content beforehand and be sure to ask your TAs and profs any Q's you may have bc they're there to help. UofT is known for trying to weed out ppl in their first year so it WILL be challenging and you will feel like crap because it's such a change from hs but as long as you plan out your day, are on top of your assignments and always ask for help, I don't think you'll struggle too much. Also, if you're interested in looking for more opportunities in the neuro field (or any field as this is a general tip), reach out to profs that you think have similar interests to you. This is very helpful when you need reference letters for school later on or if you're looking for jobs related to your field of interest. I graduated with honors after having a pretty crap first year so there's always opportunity to grow and get better over your uni journey. Good luck!
@salsaglitter5976
@salsaglitter5976 4 жыл бұрын
@@natalieeeeeeeeeee97 thank u so much for replying!! That was so extremely helpful ! Also, are the people studying neuroscience pretty competitive? Are there tons of people majoring in it or is it a smaller amount?
@natalieeeeeeeeeee97
@natalieeeeeeeeeee97 4 жыл бұрын
@@salsaglitter5976 because neuro is a newer field (only really became a "thing" maybe 20y ago) yeah it's competitive. In terms of UofT, you end up applying to the actual program after your first year (you'll hear more about applying to POST when the deadline opens) and once you make it (based on the requirements they have like GPA, minimum score in psy100, etc), then you get access to classes that will be more related to what you're interested in. In terms of people majoring in it, I think it's a decent amount. It's not as large as bio/health sci/chem but it's not as small as smth like forensics. In that sense, it's slightly competitive because it also is a mix of a large number of disciplines (bio/Chem/psych/physics/philosophy) so you'll have a lot of people taking neuro classes or people interested in neuro that aren't 100% neuro students. Job wise, like any health sci or Life sci program, it's expected for you to pursue a master's or PhD program because you can't do much with just a BSc. Any more questions, let me know 😊

NicolesVlogs thanks! i have a quick question if you don’t mind: how did you find the work load for life sci and which classes did you take? i’m in life sci but still VERY undecided so idk if i should take bio, chem, calc and all those usual courses.
@NicolesVlogs
@NicolesVlogs 4 жыл бұрын
Amrita Brar so first sem I took chem, math, a seminar course and sociology (dropped bio: i talk about that sort of in my first month of uni vid if you’re interested☺️) and id say chem was definitely a heavier course. Math for me wasnt too bad bc i did ap in high school. This sem im taking some diff courses (not rlly life sci) which i talk about also in my first year recap video if u wanna see all the courses, but briefly, id say life sci courses are pretty heavy in workload compared to high school and chem is more work than bio (pre lab and post lab take longer too), bio theres lots of readings but not everyone rlly does it so its more chill than chem id say. It does depend though on how much knowledge youre coming into your first year with. Idk if that helps aha sorry im not like too sure how id describe the workload haha ://

I feel like one of the most important things to note is that, if you want something you need to actively try and get that. In high school, teachers are more likely to tell you about opportunities and clubs but in university if you want a job opportunity or friends then you need to try to make them and try to talk to your professor about them. (edit: also take people's horror stories with a grain of salt, because your experience in any university is dependent on what you do. also try to be on good terms with the TAs because they are the university equivalent of tutors)

Thank you so much for this video. Honestly it’s been on my watch later for a while and I thought “why not just watch it now?” (even though I’m currently procrastinating lol). After watching this I feel much better about everything. I had so much anxiety and fears that I was gonna dislike UofT and possibly be the dumbest kid on campus but it’s actually not that bad (for now at least). I am definitely that student who isn’t terrible at sciences, but enjoys them so it’s makes me feel good that someone who actually goes there felt the same way I do. The imposter syndrome is starting to settle in but I’m trying to accept that fact that I got here by hard work and not just a fluke! This video is really wanting to make me reach out to my Profs and Ta’s as well. They seemed scary but I think I’m going to try to get some extra help. Thank you again!!!

@@mi793 hi! It really depends on what program you want to apply to at the end of first year. Currently specializing in psychology so I only had one required class. camille ! Hey camille, im glad it helped u out☺️☺️ and i think for dealing with imposter syndrome you kind of just have to remind yourself that you are capable! You got into the program so that means you are supposed to be there no matter how misplaced u might feel. Its def difficult but try not to think about how people around you are doing/acting because they may seem alot more put together but really this is a new experience for ALL first year students so everyones is just figuring their way out. Comparison is probably the largest factor is what causes imposter syndrome so try to just focus on your own work! It really does come with time i think though 😊 hope that helps and congrats on your acceptance!!!

April 26, 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic around the world and Canada on Lockdown. Despite of this pandemic, my son who still has 1 final exams in Engineering this week and is yet to attend a “virtual” graduation ceremony this coming June 2020 WAS OFFERED A FULL TIME MANAGEMENT POSITION IN A BIG PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY. The University of Toronto is a tough school, but in the real world it’s graduates are highly respected and admired. I’m in HR of a top law firm, and we know that UofT grads generally have lower GPAs. But, we know the difficulty factor of this university. I attribute my son’s very first job (and just 1of 2 that he applied in the middle of final exams) to UofT’s stellar reputation!

Hello! I just got accepted to UofT and the Life Sciences a couple days ago. Thank you for sharing all of this information. The course work is something I was really worried about, but reading the comments and hearing you discuss it made me feel a lot more comfortable. I'm good at science but sometimes I struggle a bit here and there. Is there office hours or other ways to get help while taking the courses? I'm also a dual citizen but currently living in the States and my grades are a mid 90's range. What would my average be around at UofT? Thanks again!
@NicolesVlogs
@NicolesVlogs 4 жыл бұрын
Hey laura, congrats on your acceptance:)) Yes! Every prof has office hours and those are really useful for asking any questions or even sometimes just going to hear what other students ask if you dont have questions yourself (depending on the prof they run their office hours differently). I cant rlly tell u what your average at uoft will be because it REALLYYY depends on the person. It depends on how easily u adjust to the uni teaching style and (u probably read in other comment replies but) study habits.. i think though if you’re interested in science(which is a rlly important factor) and u had mid 90s avg, youll be fine but again, it rlly depends on each person and how they adapt to the new environment so i cant promise anythingggg sorry but hope that still helps!!😄😄

Hey sarah omg i get your struggle that was the same exact problem my friend was having when thinking about coming to UofT. If you do choose downtown, i'm sure you'll be able to find other opps to get involved in work if you seek it out (because there's so many things downtown both in and out of school), but then again the co-op program sets things up for you so it's more like secure.. I think it depends on how much u need the co-op.. The tests are also very straightforward if you understand the concepts (all multiple choice). My prof was really good, but I hear other profs are even better, so I think you are in good hands. You can definitely pass just by attending their lectures. Would recommend, but just know that there is a LOT of reading, and they are necessary to do in order to do well (~85%+) in the course.

@@aakansharathore8714 It's difficult to answer this question without knowing more details. What do you want to do after you finish university? It all depends on what major you are choosing and how much work you are willing to put in. Assuming we are looking at Canadian universities only I would pick (in broad terms) a school like Queens, McGill, and perhaps Western. I believe that over there one can obtain a much better balance between academics and social life. You will still need to study reasonably hard but you are more likely to succeed.

DDS here. I don't know how this video ended up on my feed but not much better to do during quarantine. I like to give advice for young undergrads especially in the area I studied. Life/medical sciences. I hope I can be a bit of help some how. What do you want to do after life sciences at UofT? Medicine? Dentistry? Pharamcy? Masters then either one of those? or PhD? Your end career goal needs to be very clear especially entering life/health sciences related. You can't just attend sciences because you like sciences. Real world is much different. Getting a job with just a life sciences degree will be very difficult. If you have questions please do ask.

This is probably the worse one. You do require to memorize formulas and basic keys, but learning to adapt them into scenarios is probably the most important thing! :- )

You mentioned that you’ll be going into sociology and that’s something I’m also looking into. If you’re doing sociology now, how are you finding it and like what can you do with a BA sociology degree? I hope you’re able to answer this. Thank you in advance :)

hey! yes i'm doing soc rn! so far i like it, but I think I'll have to finish second year to have a clear idea about it. I like the topics we learn about. In terms of the second question youre asking I honestly dont know what this degree that lead to so i'm trying to learn and see what are some possible pathways. I've heard you can go into policy work, social work, research, teaching, etc, though so i think there is a wide variety. Most things though will require further credentials.

@@NicolesVlogs sorry one more question, what courses do you take? I’m asking because I’m also looking into programs and uni’s since I’ll be applying very soon. I thought it be best to ask someone who is going through the experience.

So, I want to go to this school, but considering the situation at hand, I'm not sure if I would be able to attend because I'm living in the US. What would you say?

I am currently an American and am graduating from uoft this year! Continuing grad school in Canada (at Western). I would say that if you’re American it’s easier than a lot of other countries. I think that the hardest part right now would be getting your student visa, but if you’re accepted you could probably get it at the border (I got mine at peace bridge) and they’d probably be able to give you one as long as US citizens are allowed in Canada!

Eleanor Li uofT is definitely challenging when it comes to grades! you will stumble upon profs who are hard markers and profs who are easy markers, it also depends the work you put in and what teachers look for, overall the work you put in reflects your grades. It’s not easy to get a high grade it’s all about effort

Thank you for this! what do u think about UTSC?
@NicolesVlogs
@NicolesVlogs 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! np :) and UTSC seems pretty great in my opinion haha. I was actually considering going there for mental health studies but ultimately chose st.george because I was smth more broad. I did like the idea of smaller classes and less busy campus and I do have a friend at utsc and she says she thinks its definitely more chill than st.george in terms of workload. I think each campus has its own pros and cons though
