I completed an accelerated master's programme in nursing. My course was 2 years. Even with good time management, it was the most demanding and stressful experience of my life. Im unsure if stress levels are lower in undergrad course. How enjoyable my placement was depended on the ward’s culture, the staff and my mentors. Some mentors ignored me and were very mean. Everyone has different experiences but I do not think that anyone should enter the nursing field with the expectation that it will be fun and easy.

Just my point of view, I started my training when I was 19, I've been Nurse for thirty plus years. Always look after yourself, a tired Nurse can be a dangerous Nurse. A student who shows interest is a blessing, there is nothing worse than a student who turns up showing no interest, their uniform unpressed, hair below the collar. If they can't look after them self, how can they be trusted to look after a patient! The golden rule, treat a patient like you would like your own relative to be treated. Nursing is more than a job, it is more than a degree, it is a vocation and if you don't want to look after people then don't apply. If you are to good to wash some one, clean up shit, if you are are not prepared for some hard work and don't have the vested interest of those in your care at the forefront Nursing isn't for you. Personally if you strip me to the core it will say Nurse, it defines not only my career but who I am. I'm a grade six and I've never wanted to be a higher grade than a six, any higher and you lose patient contact. Knowing you've done good job, is the best feeling in the World, you wouldn't get awards but a thank you from a patient or their family is better than anything.
@belight46863 жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention that the government will never pay nurses a fair wage. They will just cut the wages for 10 years +. Nurses are expected to work for £1 more than a care assistant who isn't degree educated or responsible to the NMC.

Just wanted to let fellow student nurses know about my experience because i have now dropped out of nursing because this career pathway is very emotionally and physically draining especially on placement. Sometimes mentors can not be the most supportive and treat u like cheap labour, doing so many chores that dont help you learn. i would not recommend nursing for someone who is not willing to be as caring as possible even if u are not getting paid or a reward. in my opinion im like doing slave work.

You can get loans from the government if your parents earn under a certain amount! I'm getting the full amount tuition loan and maintenance loan... Tuition fee loan is the one where you don't have to pay it back if you earn under a certain amount of your salary once you graduate (I think about 23k?). Even if you earn more than that, it gets written off after 25 years and you won't really notice it come out your pay anyway as it will be direct debit. Maybe £100 a month. Maintenance loan, I'm getting the full amount which is just over £11k, it's split up into trimesters. Don't worry, have a look on the govt website for advice, it's all on there x

I was a nurse in the UK, but I moved to the states and unfortunately I had to go back to nursing school. Nursing school in the states is 10x more demanding and it’s like they purposely want to you fail out. I think nursing school gets a hard reputation from America, because it’s actually so true!

i'm tagging benzathine per comment below. I trained in a School of Nursing - 3 months on a ward then 2 weeks back in school - I did 15 years service and loved my job. And yes I still have my nursing cap ! I retired as a Sister. If you do not have hands on consistent training - and that includes being able to take a persons obs manually and learning about the human body, character, how people live etc etc you have a strong foundation. Within that has to come real commitment, discipline, willingness to understand that a degree does not make a nurse. And yes I hold a degree post qualification. I was a Practitioner when Practitioner were first given that lofty title ! I retired due to a rare autoimmune disease - primary Addisons, any student nurses out there i am happy to talk to you about the disease, its presentation etc - I guarantee you that despite the promises and goodwill of already Qualified Nurses that you will need to learn to work by the seat of your pants and all level Nurses will support you - ALWAYS listen to Health Care Assistants - they are the BACKBONE of the NHS, usually been around for years, often feel unheard which is sad as they hold a wealth of knowledge. You have to learn to trust your gut instinct - you will discover that at times you have to baby sit newly qualified Drs who bless them have worked the butts off to be where they are but can be like rabbits in a head light ! Be kind and considerate to them. You will butt heads with them and others at time. You will feel worn out. Your feet will hurt. Most nurses I worked with - well our work shoes regardless of the fact that we all usually shower before and after a shift take on the ping pong !! Most of all you have to have within your heart the ability to show compassion to any human being regardless of who they are or what you may thing privately. In relation to the Pandemic - and this is the difference between an old timer - I bought masks once it looked like a sxxt storm in China with co-vid 19 - a young Dr hoping to be a GP, who are always sent to see me for experience of a person with Addisons anyway - asked me why I had ordered masks - she looked bemused - that was a learning curve for her - that is called experience, gut instinct and OMG the shite is going to hit the fan - not that unusual from a Nurse with years of experience. I am the same as 'benzathine' who has commented just below me 9 months ago - I wanted to be a nurse from age 4, yup i had the uniform and pretend med set - it never changed - can you make a nurse feel kindness and compassion in the face of what can seem the impossible - NO - it has to be very much a part of your core being before you even think of training. It is hard graft. There will be days when you think why on earth did i go into this job FFS - and others when progress is made and you have been a part of that you will feel more than content. Can you pretend to be kind etc - yes you can but that does not maketh a nurse. I am now on the other side of the fence and I am a people watcher so if in a hospital always help out the students if they are booking me in, HOWEVER a Nurse who has a nasty case of 'Nurse-itis' I do not tolerate well. A Nurse I do believe is still in a way a vocation - HOWEVER do not always expect to be thanked. Be content in your core values and ask yourself seriously is Nursing for you. I worked the usual non stop hours, had 3 children during my career with six weeks off after each of them. I hope that what i have written may pique a persons interest in Nursing and an interest in Addisons. God Bless all of you during this Pandemic. over and out from a very cold and wet Cornwall, and I have to admit abit windy too ! :)

Nursing...dont bother! 30% of newly qualified nurses give it up within 3 years When i trained they paid for your training. Now you are expected to get into massive debt. The only thing you will get out of nursing is debt and neuroses. Don't expect any quality of life cos all the time you are off duty and at home will be spent doing compulsory online training. Retired high dependency/theatre nurse 35 years.

Hello! Thank you for a your videos, they are so helpful for anyone interested in nursing! It was really good to hear that even while training at uni there are things that can make you uncomfortable (eg: eyes). I was wondering how you deal with extreme events like a stroke, I am nervous around dealing with that, but I am ok with blood or sick. How would you deal with one of these events and help future nurses know how to react calmly to them? Thank you very much ❤️

Love your family friends and watch your back in nursing. Keep the Irish and UK legal systems separate as they're designed to be. Never trust a regulatory lawyer from the UK. Trust me ✝️✝️
