5 Things Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4 Did Right

Insomniac and Marvel really hit a home run with the Playstation 4 exclusive Spider-Man game. The game really captures what it feels like to be a superhero and web swing from rooftop to rooftop in a wide-open version of New York. It's time to look at five things Spider-Man did right. Honestly, there's way more than 5 of them, so don't be surprised if we swing (nice) back to this one in the future. Nicholas Peters exactly. I was almost disappointed that the suit came because I felt like the whiny fanboys won. But I realized that it was insomniac that made it and gave it to us as a surprise FOR FREE. And some people still complained, and started saying that THEY deserved recognition because they thought that THEY got insomniac to make the suit. SHEESH😬🤣

I'm not a fan of angry behavior on either side, but to me both were at fault. It started with people just saying hey it would be great to see this then people saying no it wouldn't and then there was a backlash to it not showing up and simulataneously a backlash to the request itself which I found very bizarre. I think overall though if these companies are doing things like being involved in fan communities, sub reddits and community discussion they sort of have an obligation to listen to what people want within reason, too. You can't ask for community involvement and then be upset when they are involved. That said I'm not a fan of anyone being a dick about it on either side of that issue.

My favorite thing was the respect for the lore, but also the original ideas. They took inspiration from several Spider-man media, but thet manage to create an original version. Even some of the suits taken from the comics where improved for the game.

Another big thing they did right was a "POPULATED CITY" . When spidey's villians were running all over the city , they didn't evacuate the entire city . That's why when Doc Oct let that virus loose , it actually felt like the city was in danger .

Degenerate Jay the only thing I disliked was on my 2nd playthough was doing the MJ&miles stuff I enjoyed it the first time but on a 2nd play though it slows it down other people may love it not sure. Again only on repeat play throughout wouldn’t complain about the first play through.

Hey Jay, i found your Channel just a Week ago when i started replaying the Batman Arkham Games and i really like what you're doing in the '5 Things....etc.' Videos. In my Opinion you are very objectively and well sounded. This Video here is my Favorite so far. I am from Germany and started reading and collecting Marvel Comic-Books in 1988 which is quite a Time now. Spidey is my all Time Fav Hero. You can say i grew up with him. Marvel's Spider-Man is easily the best Spidey Game i've ever played. Even Miles Morales (which i've enjoyed a lot!) doesn't catch me as much as this did. Your 5 Things id did right are 100% what i think. Traversing through NY feels so good and it's so fun i never use Fast Travel. I love how the Music starts playing when you start swinging. Combat System just nails it. They took the Batman Free Flow and adapted it for Spidey therefore it feels different enough. He is fast, agile and not as brutal as Bats, who obviously loves to break multiple Bones. :) MJ is great in this Game. She's not the usual Damsel in Distress as portraied in many other Media. She's kinda tough and can handle herself quite well. Of Course you have to save her a Couple of Times but so does she save you over the Course of the Story. And that's what i like about their Relationship. It is the 'give and take' Thing. They care for each other and they know they can rely on each other. It's a fresh Take on the Characters i've been loving for over 30 Years. Also i love the Relations ship between Peter and Otto. Insomniac did a great Job on most of the Characters but Otto is propably my Favorite Iteration ever. He wants to do the right Thing but there are People coming and turning his Efforts into Crap (sorry for that), forcing him to the Edge and leave him with no Choice....he's not the classic Evil Doc Ock. He is a good Man who got pushed into the Position of the tragic Villain. The Thing with all the small Updates from Insomniac is great. They actually listened to their Fans and delivered not only a great Game, but they even gave them more after Release. Well...i didn't like the whole Raimi Suite Debate. I think that's because i'm an old-Gen Spidey Fan who knew and loved the Character long before the Movies existed. In Fact i dob't care about the Suit and personally think that the Trilogy is the weakest (although it is pretty good) Adaption of Spidey yet. The Advanced Suit is the best Suit in this Game. Is just what i think. That's what i told Jacinda Chew and Cameron Christian when i"ve met them in Person at Gamescom 2018. @@thisbubblygoodness7611 I agree that they were a good idea, but I personally found some of them to be a pain. For example, The Sable mission I didn't enjoy. I don't know if that's just preference or if it actually is bad, but I just don't like it. The penthouse and GCT work for me because you actually have a way to deal with enemies. In the terminal you team up with Pete and in the penthouse you get to zap the dudes. With Miles you do get the hacking app, and that Rhino bit will never not be tense for me, kind of like Croc in Asylum.

My favourite things about this game. 1. The villains and how they are incorporated into both the main story and into side-missions. Giving attention to some less well known and obscure villains like Screwball and mr. Negative, establishing that Spider Man has a history with a lot of these villains already, like Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin, Rhino, Scorpion, Electro, Vulture and Shocker. I like how Martin Li and Otto Octavius both know Peter Parker and fighting him to achieve their own revenge-driven goals. And I like that they took time to include Taskmaster, Tombstone, Hammerhead and Black Cat, this world feels believable, that it has a history with costumed heroes and vigilantes. 2. Side-Missions: I like how the side-missions are implemented, whether it's doing stuff for Taskmaster or Screwball. Or it's helping Harry Osborn with his various research stations, the majority of these side-missions are interesting. The more repetitive side-missions feel varied enough, shutting down Fisk's operations, criminal forts, and Sable checkpoints. Or stopping the various random crimes, you're not just beating down criminals, you're helping to save the citizens of the city from the criminals. And of course you have J. Jonah. Jameson constantly finding ways to blame you on his webshow 3. The Story. The story for this game is executed brilliantly, it starts off simply with shutting down Wilson Fisk's operation and escalates with the predicted gang war that Fisk promised with the mysterious Demon gang, Hammerhead's crew, Silver Sable, the police and more. The version of Peter in the game tries to be the good son and helpful soul his Aunt May raised him to be and balances it with his life as a webslinging hero to the best of his ability. His connection to villains like Li and Octavius are one of the story's strongpoints. And of course Aunt May, Miles and Mary Jane are wonderful supporting characters, with Miles preparing to take on the Spider Man mantle alongside Peter and mary Jane rekindling her relationship with Peter.

I respect Insomniac for listening to fans but keeping their own ideas, and being able to collaborate in a way that's beneficial. BUT, that Raimi suit controversy was Spiderman-fans' worst moment. The company only hinted very early on that they would include the suit, and fans hassled Insomniac in a way that made it look like we were promised and deserved the suit. It was Insomniac's plan from the beginning to add the suit, they just had to overcome legal issues, but the fans were just acting so poorly. It really damaged this community. Love Insomniac's dedication, they deserved better treatment.

One of my favorite things about the game is how quick and easy it is to switch costumes. Just pause, go to the suit screen, pick your suit (and abilities if you want) and unpause, and boom you could be mid-swing and yet you are instantly wearing the costume you just picked. It kinda ruined other open-world games that don’t have this feature though, like the Batman Arkham games feel so clunky for making you have to save and quit and go all the way to the main menu to do this, or older AC games making you go to certain place on the map like a store or your ship or safehouse. I know it isn’t a revolutionary new feature, plenty of adventure games had already implemented the feature like Skyrim, Fallout, newer AC games, and Zelda BotW (heck, even Ocarina had this feature in ‘98), to name a few. But I love it in this game and also how the costume you pick appears in whatever cutscene plays, so you almost feel like the costume director for a Spider-Man movie or show lol. I also think it was very wise to let players mix and match the suit abilities with other suits, even if thematically the abilities are meant to be used with the suit that they are unlocked with, it still adds more player freedom and lets us be creative and, well, have more fun! Overall, they knocked it out of the park with how they handled the costumes.

I enjoyed Shattered Dimensions but it was missing that open world web slinging. This is the game Spider-Man fans wanted. You could spending hours simply web slinging and it's the most relaxing feeling. I also love the unlockable costumes by *PLAYING* the game, mixing and matching the costumes/powers to your taste and of course the Spider-Man humor. Thank you Insomniac Games

On another occasion, he also said Batman just straight up isn't a hero, which is even more ridiculous. You do know that the fighting system wasn't inspired by Arkham series right? This system was in spider-man 2 and 3 before the Batman games. Just far better here. And no different buttons for combos. The counter system is just his Spider sense. Which he has in every Spider-Man game. Now if you said the gadgets were Arkham inspired, then maybe I'd let that slide. But they had Gadgets in the new Spider-Man movies. So of course they'll put them in the game. And last time I checked, Arkham doesn't have air combat. 😂

i wouldn't compare too much this combat with the arkham games' for batman it's rhythm based this is combo (and experimentation) based...keeping a rhythm (or the combo meter) doesn't matter at all for spiderman you're basically free to do whatever while fighting while for batman it's a focused thing that has a flow that you should not break because if you do you are at disadvantage because you have to build the rhythm again from the beginning

I'm gonna have to disagree with that last one to a certain degree, specifically the whole Raimi suit fiasco. Yes, fans were absolutely within their rights to request the suit (even if I think it should've been excluded but that's beside the point) but getting to the degree that it did was just unacceptable. Insomniac was going to release the suit for free on Christmas, but had to cave in and release it early just to get the toxic fanbase off their backs. It even got to the point where some devs got death/rape threats in their Twitter DMs, so it feels like they just gave in to the bullies' demands instead of showing their appreciation. Normally listening to fans is a great thing, but this whole incident just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Honestly in my opinion I really couldn't get used to the advanced suit. I know some people say the advanced suit is the best costume and believe me I played as the advanced suit through the playthrough and the dlc but I just didn't like the suit. Maybe if the added red around the legs and feet in my vision would've been a dope suit lol I know everyone it's silly. Overall the upper body is a good fit, the lower body I didn't like. So mostly the suits I played were: Homecoming suit Sam ramai suit Iron spider armor and suit costumes Future foundation suit Mark 4 suit Far from home suit Scarlett spider 2 suit Anti lock suit

What I think the Advanced suit needed is colour, i know they added the white but the red parts just look so faded in comparison, it should have been more vibrant and the legs should also had more red with this unique white armor around. Mary Jane isn't a 2d character here, but she's a 3d bitch in this game. She's a real buzz kill to Peter and I think she is jealous of his super powers. Doesn't make sense to have her going into these dangerous situations. Would have rather had those scenes with Yuri instead since she's a cop and can handle her own. If Mary Jane is going to be that insufferable, they need to at least make her hot.

I can think of only two things that I didn't like in this game, the first being the weird dream level with Scorpion. It just didn't seem to fit his character at all. Would have been better with Mysterio, or just not in the game at all. Felt really out of place. The other thing I really didn't like was part 2 of the paid DLC. The Heist level with Black Cat set up the DLC story so well, and Silver Linings concluded it in such an epic way, but the middle one, Turf Wars, just paled in comparison. The whole point in it was to set Hammerhead up as this massive threat, and he just...didn't come across as that. I think it would have been better to have had an actual boss fight with him at the beginning of that DLC chapter, just to gauge his threat level, so then, when you faced him at the end when he's upgraded, you can see the clear improvement and spike in difficulty facing him. I just want to say I absolutely love this game like it’s fantastic. When I first played this game it’s hands down the best spider man I’ve ever played and I literally didn’t realize how awesome spider man was until I played this game. Plus this game makes Batman Arkham Knight suck.

This game made Spider Man such a freaking badass and plus it really well with Peter Parker's life, his life as Peter Parker and being Spider Man and also it did really well with his relationship with Mary Jane. Like don't get me wrong loved the Batman Arkham games. But this game was fantastic like you said.

I like Batman more but still love Spidey as well. I think he hasnt been well written in comics though for years, mostly. Like especially after the original Superior Spiderman series concluded there was no solid direction for the character for years.

Gotta half disagree with you on combat and traversal. Yes, the traversal mechanic feels smooth... sometimes. I found a lot of the time, especially during the Scorpion poison trip segment and the final Research Station mission that the traversal system felt stiff and didn't do what I wanted it to do. Hell, I died a few times on the Scorpion mission because the game just outright refused to let me swing at points causing me to fall into the poison. As for the combat, it's not that I think the combat itself is bad, it feels good, my issue are the enemy types that make it a massive fucking chore and just not fun at points. There were just too many enemy types that, when thrown together (and they often were) made the combat unnecessarily difficult, especially in the Turf Wars and Silver Lining DLC. Whoever made the decision to give the brute a minigun and then have him be immune to your webbing, and then put him in those bullshit Screwball Combat Challenges deserves to be demoted because that was a really stupid and unneeded inclusion. Same goes for the stupid fucking jetpack shield enemies. Easily this game's most glaring flaw.

I personally don't love those movies but enjoy the first ASM and liked his suit a lot in it. I was disappointed it didn't end up in the game but maybe in the future it will.

I did not give a single fuck about MJ in this. "Bitchy ineptitude" is not a great personality trait. Play the train station scene again. She endangered lives by purposely not telling Peter about her lead because she was mad at him. Plus, she looked like a redheaded variant of Sara Ryder from Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Good game, lots of Arkham influence and...Peter talks incessantly about his responsibility to people and events to the point where he is micromanaging and emotionally manipulating other people and the Parker Guilt Exploration makes me want to vomit. Yay!

For me, personally, it only has one glaring flaw that prevents me from giving it a 10/10, and that's the multiple enemy types, and it gets especially bad in the DLC. In the main game, the only ones that were really bullshit, in my opinion, were the RPG and whip enemies. But when you reach the DLC, specifically Turf Wars and Silver Lining, every new enemy type they added just made the game worse and really made it feel like a chore. The jetpack shield enemy was unnecessarily difficult to deal with, thanks to that trail he left behind that could disable your gadget, but the worst offended is the brute with the minigun. Whoever thought giving the brute a minigun and then making him immune to being webbed or having his weapon taken from him was a complete moron who deserves to be demoted. To make it worse, the minigun brutes were unnecessarily difficult to dodge, especially when they did a horizontal shot.

There’s a big misconception out there that the fans made insomniac cave & put the raimi suit in the game & it’s not true, they had always planned to add it after launch but they needed to get the rights to it... but the way fans acted like babies prior to getting it was disgraceful, almost makes me wish they didn’t add it, even though it’s my favorite suit.

The other way around, Arkham ripped off Spider-Man. The combat that Arkham "pioneered" actually was in Spider-Man 2 years before. Arkham fleshed it out, true, but Spidey did it first.
