I get liking a curated dex and I get liking DLC over 3rd versions. But maaaaan I just can't agree. A dex cut does have the nice side benefit of removing top threats to make a more interesting metagame. But like you say too, dexit isn't necessary to make these kinds of metas happen. Dexit cuts both good and bad Pokemon. It was cool seeing Murkrow used for Prankster Tailwind, yeah. But what if Murkrow was cut too? What low tier pick could have seen some love earlier in SV but didn't because it wasn't programmed in? Dexit's only purpose is to sell these Pokemom back to you in the form of DLC. Because how do you sell DLC if it only contains the same Pokemon as the base game? It even is a big pusher for powercreep too, but that's getting carried away. Just a lot of bad practices stem from dexit. Anyways, still a good video and I respext you even liking the dex cut. Hope to see more videos like this along with the vgc stuff.

Appreciate the thoughtful comment! A lot of natdex mons were locked behind the third game in the past anyway for you to complete the dex in those respective gens, so while I'm definitely not for that, I guess I'm saying it's better as a $30 add on than a $60 full reset.

I feel like in SV’s case the dex cut is more needed than ever as to make sure Shedinja doesn’t do it’s Tera electric shenanigans but also all Pokémon gained new models, textures, and some animations. This was about 300 ish Pokémon at first they all look incredible. Metallic sheens on some guys look awesome and I really appreciate them slimming down Persian and the Eeveelutions to look more like actual animals rather than clay models, it’s cool.

Was never for the competitive argument side of the dex cut since if they really cared, you could have every pokemon in the game but just limit ranked to allow pokemon from the regions dex or something like that. But with SV and future legends games, a dex cut is definitely necessary. With sword and shield it was a cop out because the models were just upscaled from the 3ds ones, but SV and legends visibly improved alot of the models so cut the devs some slack. Also, I dont get why you don't agree to liking DLC over 3rd versions. I don't care how much money you make, "3rd" or Definitive versions of a game without the option to upgrade the original for cheap is bad/anti-consumer practice. Atlus still does this and charges 70$ for their games now.

@@stygy9929 To me, 3rd versions compared to DLC feel about the same. It was a lateral change, which is a real shame because DLC should be the clear winner. Like you say, charging $30 should always be better than charging $60 for a new game that has the new content built into. But the execution of DLC keeps me from saying the discounted price is worth it. One thing I miss with 3rd versions is how they would try to fix or improve the base game experience. Since you are buying a new game, they can better address early game content. More challenging gym battles in Emerald. Or basic QoL improvements like increasing the Surf speed in Platinum. These kinds of improvements haven't really been a consideration for DLC, and I wish they were. DLC could do these things in the future, sure. But the DLC we get assumes most players have already beaten the main story, so there is little point in improving gym battles if the player won't ever get to experience that. Personally, I am not really a fan of the stories we have gotten from DLC. Too anime for my taste. The content we get from DLC other than the story and of course the new Pokemon, is pretty whatever for me too. Berry collecting mini game wasn't that fun for me. Grinding for BBQ points is, well, a grind. It's just not the style content I want to see, and I feel this style content is what we get because of the nature of DLC. Other than the content of the DLC, I'm also not a fan of how its presented. There are 2 DLCs, one for each version. Which sucks. Even if you buy the DLC, you are only getting part of it because you are only buying 1 version's DLC. I said it earlier too, but I feel the DLC model encourages Dexit and power creep. Sure, third versions can and did do this too. But it feels like it has been worse with DLC. Again, DLC really should be better than the third version model, but Game Freak's execution makes DLC feel no better than 3rd versions. My tastes are my own, but I wish DLC was being used to make more people (like myself lol) happy. Hope all that makes sense.

Have to disagree with dexit only being there to sell dlc. You don’t need to buy the dlc to transfer old Pokémon in or trade/breed for them. If you buy it just for the returning Pokémon, that’s because you want to specifically catch it in that game.

The competitive scene is WAY more diverse. Take a look at the statistics for the stockholm regionals - 125 different pokemon were used there. Of course, some were used more than others, and some got better results than others, but that was only the top 256 teams, and the stereotype of "competitive players only use the same 20 good pokemon" is just wildly incorrect.

I never cared much about Mega Evolution, but I do like Dynamax and Terastallization. Having said that, I don't think we need all these special gimmicks cuz Pokemon was fun back when you did not have them. But I do love the newers game so much. The Graphics in Scarlet/Violet is amazing, the Open World is something I really enjoy, and Pokemon appearing in the overworld and actually interacting with their environment, to a limited degree, is all I ever wanted. I hope we see these features stay and improved upon in future games.

I respect your opinions but have to disagree on a few points. Mainly DLC vs. 3rd version.. i dont like the idea of DLC, at all.. i paid 60 dollars for an unfinished product with dexxit, and they want me to pay MORE MONEY for a decent postgame?? Third versions like Platinum didnt just add more content, but revamped and rebuilt the game is a million small ways that made it way better than the previous versions. Sure you could argue 3rd versions do the same thing, but I still think Diamond and Pearl are good on their own, while base S/V makes me feel like im missing out bc I didnt shill $100 dollars total for some bonus content

Without question Emerald(my favorite), Platinum, BW2 and USUM are outright superior to their base version Scarlet and Violet are *the* biggest disappointments in the series to me as well as the only one (Violet) I had outright buyers remorse for and no unlike Sword and Shield the DLC doesn’t excuse or fix the problem(so much so that I didn’t buy it) this time I can look past dex cuts as it’s not that important to me, I can look past the fact the battle frontier is likely never coming back and I can even look past the fact that most of the quality of life improvements are centralized on competitive battling and not exploring the actual region itself but the lack of time given to develop these games is not enough if SV is of any indication from the frame rate drops, the glitches, uneven textures, bad draw distance, absurd amounts of lag even when not online, broken raids, slow menus on top of a 60 dollar console game that’s clearly unfinished with paid DLC planned and in development was something that left a bad taste in my mouth and I don’t want repeated I can’t wait for Legends Z-A though Legends Arceus was the most fun I’ve had with the console Pokémon games not counting rescue team DX and snap 2

completely agree. I will also say for the dex cut is that I like that most of the Pokemon in a game are available in said game. People want to talk about how anit-consumer the dex cut is ignoring the fact it meant that to gain access to a huge chunk of the pokemon in the game, needed for 100% completion, you have to go back and often buy games that are several years old. For instance, I have a friend trying to complete the Nat Dex in Black 2, it's a total pain in the ass, you have to at times go back to GBA games to get pokemon. Locking Pokemon behind earlier games isnt a problem to me if the game is recent and not a huge portion is locked behind it, like with legendaries from SWSH and Arceus in SV, but it's a real problem when about half the Pokemon in the game can only be gotten by purchasing a game beyond the pair you're playing. If I purchase Scarlet, I should be able to mostly 100% Scarlet by playing just Scarlet, I can get everything else by trade if there are only a few exclusives like they are doing right now. I remember as a kid just being utterly demotivated to ever try completing the Pokedex until ORAS came out because I knew how many old games I'd have to drudge through using money I didn't have. This was mostly rectified in Gen 6, as you could get all Nat dex Pokemon between X and Y and ORAS, but then you get to Sun and Moon and while yes, they did get rid of the Pokedex tracking non Alola Pokemon, it still feels really really weird to have half of the Pokemon not logged in the dex. It made completing the dex far less satisfying and again, made multiplayer far more about how many old games you have access to. I really adored how Let's Go was just Kanto, I wouldve liked a few more extras (same with BDSP) but it helped me gain a real attachment to many Kanto Pokemon I never had to before, because I was forced to use them.

Thanks for pointing that out, I feel like beating my head against a wall whenever people mention not going in houses... They JUST went open world and look how buggy it is. What people need to complain about is them not taking more time to test their games and fix them before release. I think the dex cut stuff would be more bearable for the casual player if it also came with a better overall product. We all love pokemon, but we know what was wrong in scarlet and violet and they need to do better.

6:22 I'm gonna have to be an outlier here when it comes to using older pokemon, I highly doubt anyone will use Kanto Ninetails when Alolan Ninetails is better overall, so unless they give older gen mons the much need evolution such as Primeape's new Annihilape form. The older gens will remove lower tiered until then.

I mean I love both ninetails and I cannot speak on a competitive level i only watch competitive videos i am not good nor skilled enough to participate as i am more of a shiny hunter. but I am totally fine with having multiple forms. A pokemon doesn't need to be competitively viable just to exsist I mean hell from what i've seen of current VGC format if we removed pokemon that weren't viably competitive more than half the dex would be gone

The 3rd game thing - which I always HATED - is the reason why I skipped the 6th gen completely: I made the mistake of waiting for Z and received Sun and Moon instead. DLCs are better in every aspect. Of course, it would have been better if they had made games with everything they had in mind from the start, but often the best ideas come after you have released something

I must admit I got into Pokemon during lockdown (my partner is a big fan) and when I first heard about Dexit I thought “Oh that sucks, you can’t catch all the Pokemon in a single gen” but it turns out this has been the case since Gen 3/4. The difference was only in how the Pokemon aren’t programmed in at all. Honestly while the National Dex was a nice idea, I feel like needing previous games for completion sucks

The games stopped registering Pokémon not catchable in the game to a dex in 2013. Anything extra was just so you can still keep the Pokémon you have memories with in your game. The uproar is because since 2003 people have been able to keep the same Pokémon and bring them into every new game and make new memories with them. As of 2019 game freak has removed the feature and now there are Pokémon I've owned for years that still haven't made it into a switch era game and I just want to take funny pictures and have them in my picnics

@@tomithy_logames actually still had a National Pokédex all the way up until OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire in 2014. Sun/Moon in 2016 were the first games to remove the national dex, but they still had all Pokémon outside of the regional dex obtainable. Then Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee in 2018 were the first games to outright exclude Pokémon from previous games, with Sword/Shield in 2019 doing the same and that being how it is ever since.

I am mixed in the $60 3rd game thing. It has always been a crap business practice, however DLC means that you can not longer retain the resell value of that game. The fact they even are doing DLC in general I feel is bullshit. These games are incomplete these days, and they are going to charge *more* for a more complete experience? I'd rather wait for a 3rd *complete* game over paying for some DLC.

I agree in principle with the dex limitation, but I disagree with how they implement it. For the first few months until Pokemon Home compatibility arrives, no transfers. Then, they allow in like 2-5 old regular pokemon (usually previous starters)....and nearly ALL the legendaries! I feel like half the point of limiting the dex is so that we don't have to see frigging Kyogre all over the place forever, and then they just let them in anyway! Until they open the floodgates, we have to deal with the 2-6 legendaries (depending on how you count them) per game and that's it. Once the gates are open, every online team is 5 legendaries and 1 of the new local overpowered hotness from ubers. Keep those out and just let us have like 80% of the nonlegendary pokemon back, please!

You never play online. Every team I find online are your usual 1 restricted with 6 non restricted mons. Competitively we also have to come to terms that some legendaries are just on par with non legendary ones, it doesnt really matter. Only the restricteds have a significant difference than the rest. What's wrong with people having legendaries? Competitive is not about the lore of the Pokémon it just has to do with how strong they are and how they interact with the meta's pool.

I'm gonna have to Disagree to some extent on the DLC section. Do i prefer over a 3rd game sure however this is my major gripe with S/V DLC so raging bolt, gouging fire, Iron crown and iron boulder are all in teal masks dex which means you have to get all 4 of them to complete the dex and consider they make you pay for the DLC SEPARATELY for both versions to get them all it's basically the same price like paying for a 3rd game so nothing as really changed.

The different is that you can choose alternative version to complete your pokedex (for example u play sun and then u can choose ultramoon) and u just missed one pokemon only (blacephalon) while DLC forced u to play your fixed version. And for B2/W2 you can complete the whole pokedex by playing the consequence version

sv are top 5 games. they should put all pokemon in game at least for main gen games. no need to cut ppls favorite in favor of competition. they can keep doin regulations and allowing certain pokemon to be usable. a mechanic that every pokemon can use was the right call. cuttin pokemon makes the game boring. i like the game over the competition and not bein able to use my favorites turns me off of the game. im a person that eats what i like to eat not eat because its food around. i dont even use some of the pokemon from most recent games. SV stood out because i have a whole lot of favoites from different games. DLC beats a 3rd version. it beats two versions of the same game lol. open world is the right way to go for pokemon. all they need is to fill in the world. i never bought both games or 3rd games. it was not worth it at all.

I never personally saw this overlap issue in the gen 7 meta, then again i'm not a hardcore competitive player, but even so. Honestly I'd wish that Gamefreak would just take and refine the gimmick's they have, rather than try to create something new at this point. You might have a good point lore wise on Dyna/Gigantamaxing but I still don't like it because it honestly felt like a blatant fusion of the previous 2 gimmicks(transforming pokemon and using super versions of moves), and making pokemon turn kaiju sized ain't really that impressive, not only that but the same negative issue from what I saw people disliking Mega's and how certain pokemon should've gotten them while others didn't, it's the same with Gigantamax, and to be honest some of those g-forms could've been used as mega designs like for Machamp and Lapras, the other problem was the fact it was the most restrictive of all gimmicks, you could only use it in raid dens or certain battle area's, the other gimmicks you can use at your leisure whenever you want, even if the current one requires you going to pokemon center for a recharge. If you want me to enjoy something like that, i should be able to employ it whenever I want.

While I'm sure outrage drives views, I'm glad we can all take a step back and appreciate what Pokemon has done right as well. I may not agree on Dexxit, but everyone has their own opinions. I do like the "discounted third game" that the DLCs for new generations have become as an extension to the story instead of a brand new one as well.

I mean they start with way less now than they did when they were working toward a full dex. And I mention a future gen with no Rilla or Incin at all, citing the fun early metas to show how fun a whole gen could potentially be with the right cuts. That's the point.

@PokeBurm That's not really true. Gen 5 VGC scene started with only the Unova dex. The National Dex wasnt included for a long time. The SV dex with dlc and home transfers have more Pokémon than the National Dex at the time of Gen 5. Heck, it's comparable in Pokémon count with the Gen 6 National Dex total now. Base XY was at 450 compared to SV's 400. The base SV dex has more Pokémon than base Sun and Moon's 300. There isn't anything actually special being done with the post dex cut games as far as competition goes or making Pokémon standout more. They've been doing the same thing for over a decade with curated battle playlists, it's just we don't have everything available now anymore by year 2. Being hopeful they cut specific starters out because they're VGC relevant isn't that realistic.

I will never understand using "competitive" as an argument for things. Those who host tournaments are the ones who make the rules and decide which Pokemon are or are-not allowed to compete. It was never necessary to delete "OP" Pokemon or to delete "OP" features from the games "for competitive" when those people could (and already have) made rules and tier lists determining which brackets Pokemon are allowed to fight in. Even with online tournaments, the people playing have control over the rules. Official tournaments exclude species all the time WITHOUT needing to delete them. The same is true for all these arguments about there being "too many to catch now". Even Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the last games to have every species programmed-in from the get-go did NOT expect you to catch them all (the dex is only 403 even though the game has 804 programmed into it). Nothing needed to be deleted to accomplish that.

They've cited it's too technically demanding to include all mons in every game, which I stated in the vid. Whether you believe that or not is up to you. I'm not saying I'd prefer mons get cut, I'm just saying as a competitive player, it's convenient for versatile metas, not that competitive is the reason they're doing it. It's not -- TPCI cares infamously little about the competitive scene.

Also I just got into VGC in the last few gens but have never participated - and with also wanting to watch ash win the world tournament and actually have ALL gimmicks be animated is pretty cool but I didn't even consider how overpowered it all would be if it was accessible. I technically understand the Dexit haters, but personally I haven't bothered porting my old Pokemon from old games forward since gen 5. It's way more fun to me to play with the Pokemon the region was built around, rather than bringing in my old faves to stomp a new region with. And the limited dex makes Pokedex completion something that's actually doable again. Catching ~400 Pokemon is WAY less trouble than trying to catch all 1000+ across the past 6 generations and slowly feed them forward to get actual dex completion. For the people who are into that, Pokemon Bank is a great place to store your mega-ultra-living dex.

I'd agree with that dex cut segment if Gamefreak actually managed their development and resources better, along with buffing those underrated obsolete mons for competitive play. yknow, actually solving the problems that dexit were suppose to fix, just feels like a happy coincidence with a copium reduction.

MMOs are open world RPGs, but they have places sanctioned off. It's still considered open world though. It's gonna have boundaries regardless. So I'd still consider SWSH and PLA open world games.

I am still sort of devided on the whole dexit. I do not mind if there aren't new dex entries, but as time passes, the whole line up of pokemon should be complete to the point as if it was like Gen 7 again.
