5 Things To Know Before Buying A GOLD WATCH!! - Rolex, Audemars, Patek & More!

Buying a gold watch can be a very big step for most of us. Having the right knowledge and mindset before can help you when pulling the trigger. Here are 5 things that I would like to share with you for buying a gold watch.
1. Know your budget.
This is an important way to start because with this you can set the tone and direction on what to look for before making your purchase. With so many different avenues to take on this approach one could just go in circles or be discouraged if you do not know where to start. There are many options that can fit your budget if you look in the right place.
2. Choose the correct brand
After you know your budget it is also important to choose the correct brand. The reason is because not all watch brands are investments, but you have to buy what you like and can. There are many good options out there from brands that have a heavy discount preowned. Brands like Panerai and IWC have very nice gold watches at very good deals. But you have to buy with a heavy discount. Brands like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Richard Mille will usually hold the most value long term.
3. Select the right color
The color of gold that you select, whether its rose, yellow, or white says a lot about you. Yellow is the most classic but for some people it may seem a bit to loud and flashy. White gold is obviously the more toned down approach and is more of a "if you know you know" approach. Rose is more toned down than yellow and seems to attract a much more sophisticated look.
4. Condition is everything
Gold watches are a lot softer than steel or titanium watches. When buying one you have to make sure that you are getting a watch that is in good condition. A very poorly polished gold watch can be ruined to the point of no return. So look at them closely.
5. Accept more responsibility
The reason this step is important is because a gold watch demands a much more mature wearer. You will be wearing a more expensive and important item on your wrist. There are more conscious decisions that would have to be made while you wear this watch. An example would be that if you are going to dinner you may want to valet in front of the restaurant rather than parking in the rear. Same goes for activities like for example home improvements. You need to use more care.

A very good tip when you buy a Gold Rolex is to line the inside of the bracelet with strips of masking tape, and replace it every 6 Months or so. This may sound strange but it prevents the soft Gold links from rubbing together and loosening them. I have a original Gold YachtMaster from the early 90s,and the bracelet is as tight today as it was when i first purchased it. (and no one ever sees the tape.) People can laugh but, because I've done this for 27 Years or so the Watch is worth a few thousand more than your average YachtMaster. "And it still looks awesome!"

Point # 5 is spot on. Full gold can land you in trouble. You have to know how and where to wear these pieces. The GMT FYG with the green anniversary dial is my favourite piece.

Great video! At the end, you mentioned a Sky Dweller being ruined by too much water exposure. Is that watch not as waterproof as a typical Rolex? Also, is there a good less costly alternative to a rose gold Day-date? I love the look of the watch but almost $40k is a bit of a stretch. One thing you left out on your list of gold watches is that each company’s version of yellow & rose gold looks different. Like an AP rose gold looks way different compared to an Everrose Rolex watch.

Of course Rolex, AP & Patek look great in gold but at a substantial price. For great value a gold Panerai such as the PAM 140 Luminor represents an amazing value and is a “heavy hitter” with 44mm of yellow gold with black carbon fiber dial. It has as much or more wrist presence as the others at a fraction of the price. One major advantage of the Panerai is the ability to change straps easily and the great selection of straps available. For example I can go very bold with the PAM 140 on a red Croc strap. Or I can go dressy with a black or brown Croc strap. Or I can put it on rubber for a sporty look and the ability to go in the water with it. Very versatile.

I grabbed an 18ct rose gold 37mm Longines Elegant L.888 discounted from £2500-£1800 in April as my first contemporary classic in gold to service that itch.Also have 1965 Longines 34 mm 2 hands 9ct yellow gold dress watch and a 37mm 1940 Doxa 14ct rose gold officers watch. I’ve covered the gold section of my collection for now. Creeping a little slower towards the Breguet Marine BD All Steel.The gold lust put a dent in that aspiration yet I’m happy enough to off load some entry-level pieces to make up the difference nearer the time. I got the subs steel 2017 and gold 2019. Daily wear the steel. I did wear the gold when I just bought it. But it brings too much attention, you see people watching and calculating or google pricing, and thats a little bit akward in some situations. You couldn't be more correct when saying being responsible and think about how and when you wear a gold watch, especially if you want to keep your gold watch looking good for as long as possible. It's also nice to enjoy them by not wearing them like a daily watch. This way the wearer will enjoy a sense of occasion when putting it on. It can't be denied. One thing that I have noticed is that a thinner watch is less likely to be knocked on hard surfaces than a chunkier watch. A gold watch should be relatively thin. For me that rules out thick watches (no 7750-based gold watches for me!). I have a gold El Primero which is relatively thin (considering the complications). My thinnest watch is a 60s Omega Seamaster with a manual wind movement. It has never been knocked during my ownership.

I think the best-value gold watch is a pre-owned Bell and Ross. I've seen a full yellow-gold model for around $20k. Doesn't have the history of other makers but looks pretty good. Gotta buy pre-owned though! Retail is like $32k, ouch!

I also have the Rolex green sub black sub blue sub sea dwellers, although I rarely wear them, I still love them and appreciate about the craftsmanship more than the investment aspect.... so far the only watch I want and haven’t got is the double balanced wheel AP, which I really like. For some reason I got bad impressions and bad experiences with Patek,Vacheron and JLc, what the funny thing is I have watches from all these three brand, and they were pretty much all very inaccurate even compare to a cheap EtA movement, and have mechanical problems, in comparison, all the Breguet watches I have, are all so extremely accurate and satisfying..... even my Hublot collection are all satisfying too..... who knows, just my personal experience.... and Eric your channel is 👍 I still remember that episode you talked about watch size, you said: “ when it comes to Hublot, you need Jesus! “ hahaha that cracked me up !
