#1 regarding Mileage Pass made me think of the time my two buddies and I drove from Ft. McClellan, Alabama to Tampa Bay, Florida on a 4-day weekend. We put in the paperwork, so we were good to go. Those were good days! 🌴😎😎😎

I am now a Civilian living in Texas. I will not, and would advise any American not to go to a Mexican border town. They are corrupt and you could get arrested and basically kidnapped by police to shake your family down for money. The drug cartels and runners will kill you or possibly use you for a shield.. further south around Mexico City or so you will probably be ok as long as you obey the law.. BUT, the border area is dangerous for naive tourists.

What MOS did you pick? I got this voice in my head that says 11B, but most people tell me is basically a janitor, that I should pick something that passes to civilian jobs, and few people tell that 11B is the way to fully experience the Army and that I can take ollegue and clases to prepare for a civilian job.

The 250 mile radius has existed for a long time. Back in the early 90s when I was at Carson and no one had a mobile phone, we would go skiing for the weekend and would have to leave the number for the lodge in case of alerts. It's all about accountability.

I had the Flu the day we were headed to the field, went to sick call, got something to stop the diarrhea, something to stop throwing up, something to bring the fever down and the old standby ( ibuprofen or whatever was the miracle pill ) they had ne lay down for 30 minutes to make sure my fever dropped under 100 and off to the field I went with instructions to stop by the medics every morning, and night until I was better. First 3 days was rough trying to get through the day. Gave me an even better appreciation of what the soldiers in past wars had gone through as different diseases hit our guys at some pretty high rates in different areas they fought! Had a Buddy stationed at Cartoon ( Ft Carson ) apparently the cops in Colorado Springs were beating up soldiers who lived off base. Post Commander put all services/ stores/bars and all but 1 gas station off limits. ( this would of been 82/83 ) they had MPs patrolling the streets and you better not stop anywhere else. Within a week the Mayor decided he needed to take care of the situation as all the buisnesses were feeling the pinch. I heard this also happened in Washington state ( Tacoma? ) from my brother ( a lifer, 2 tour Vietnam Vet, since passed away ) cant remember why but it was the same thing soldiers being mistreated either by the police or buisnesses with the police looking the other way.

Use to get a big kick out of listening to these "barracks lawyers" and their crap about: "We should be able to smoke weed." "We should be allowed to have beards." etc. It made me wonder why they even enlisted to begin with.

I hope that weed becomes federally legal so, soliders can avoid all of the bullshit we have to deal with due to alcohol. Ive been deployed to Korea and I had to deal with shit all of the time. A senior NCO of mine got in trouble for attacking a guy in a bar. Plus, we could get rid of all of the DUIs. Instead of having soliders talk about getting wasted at a bar, they would be talking about getting high and chilling at home.

When I was stationed in Germany (before the wall came down) 1985-1992. As long as we had a pass, we could go anywhere. Went to England, France, Greece, Austria. We went all over Europe. With a special pass, we went to east Germany. Things were a whole lot different then.

At northern tier USGSC bases within the US Air Force (Malmstrom, Minot, FE Warren), and at some other bases, you can travel within an 8 hour driving radius from base. That's simply because Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming don't have much that young Airmen want to do on their off-time. Exception: travelling to Canada, which requires approved leave.

While stationed at Barksdale AFB in the early '00s the OSI (CID+more) local area in-brief included a statement that being in a specific area of town (known for prostitution, drugs, and gangs) after dark would be considered presumptive evidence of a litany of UCMJ violations. My now ex-wife taught in a elementary school in that neighborhood. When they had after school events, I was there because... (see above.) So one time, I get to my vehicle and I see a business card under a wiper. Wife drives off. (Was Friday about 2130 when cleanup was done.) Look at it and read the note on back. "Sir, Report to my office 0900 Monday. Your SQ/CC (Squadron Commander) will be there. Lawyer or ADC (Area Defense Council) may attend if you wish." And the person's initials. Card was from an OSI Agent. Was a bad weekend. No fallout for me, but my Boss offered several "suggestions on the proper use of other Commander's time" to his Boss. Agent and I both heard this kick off, in the OSI Commander's office down the hall... A life time later (90 seconds?) door slams open and they come in like a hurricane. His boss demands Agent tells my boss why I was Court Martial bound... (Neighborhood+night =No_Go. Car unoccupied in parking lot.) 10 seconds later my boss demands I explain myself. (Wife teaches there+cleanup=Night= Wife carries .357 S&W I gave her.) The Bosses glare @ each other& tell us to get out. We did, fast! Moral of all this: even if you are not doing wrong, explaining that can still cause bad outcomes.

If you're a single soldier you can't keep personal firearms in your room on base. It has to be locked in the Arms Room. Unless you have access to an off post storage locker. Your Commander can dictate what Supplements you are allowed to take. Example: We weren't allowed to take ANY Thermogenic products in Iraq in 2003 (Ripped Fuel and Hydroxycut were the products we used most back then). The Marines were allowed to, but we weren't. The Army is Death on Under age drinking. I was a Mike Papa. The 1st BDE/1AD put this one Club off limits in Friedberg, Germany. The owners were Turks and allowed their bouncers to beat Joes with Expandable Batons. We went in with the Polizei a few times and the Polizei told them if they let G.I.s in again, they and the MPs would shut them down, permanently. I sure did like the Polizei. I didn't want to see a Joe get beat up even though he was going to a Black-Listed club.

Maybe the rules have changed since I was enlisted but there are to my knowledge no rules prohibiting such relationships unless one is the direct supervisor. So if the E5 is the direct supervisor to the E4 then yeah, it has to end or transfer. Now it is different for Senior Enlisted, aka E7 or higher. Odds are an E7 has a decade of time in service, so aged 28. Clearly not going to date an 18 year old.

Better make sure you keep up. A good chunk of your "peers" are 18-24. You will be able to tap into old man skill, remember that. As long as you are squared away, there may be a drill instructor that will watch you closely, almost mentor you. Cant show favoratism... but he will keep a close eye. Not a bad thing.

@christopherchaos

so that extra money is for cost of living to pay rent and what not. If you did not have any children with that spouse then they will have you move into the barracks and you no longer need BAH and BAS because you dont live off post. If you do have children then you continue to receive BAH and BAS and dont go back into the barracks.
