Hot Tip: the ‘Create Nulls From Path.jsx’ script (in the Windows menu) will automatically assign null layers to each mask point. This works with Shape Layer bezier paths too. Then you can animate each mask vertice independently and precisely, or track the point to another object or footage, or assign expressions to the null to create procedural animation on your mask. Opens up a LOT of powerful possibilities for mask animation which on its own is pretty sloppy.

Another option in the Create Nulls From Path script is “Trace Path” which will track a single null automatically to follow along the path’s edges. The null’s rotation will also auto-orient to the path. It sets default position keyframes to trace the path around over one second, I think, which can be adjusted. Then you can track things like particle generators or other layers to the null.

Exactly. A great built in script that AE added. Maks points>to Null. Still wish mask points would be as flexible to animate like other objects in AE..so you could use the Speed/Value graph on them and edit their curves

Nick awesome content as usual. would love to see if you could do a video on demystifying displacement; I feel it's one of those subjects that honestly escapes everyone. It's logic and how it works. And how it could be useful. I feel it's one of those powerful things that people don't get to under stand.

Great tips! the right-click track mask looks like a simple version of the MochaAE plugin, which I'd use instead in most cases but great to have a quick option

good question! Not that i am aware of. In this case, it is likely more efficient to use a matte or set matte
