Buying a Tesla has been one of the best purchases I’ve ever made in terms of satisfaction and savings. But it is still a relatively expensive car. I’m all about exploring technology that saves you time, money, or energy so before you buy a Tesla yourself, here is a crucial checklist to go through to avoid having any regrets.
Calculate your fuel savings for yourself before deciding on buying a Tesla to get a good idea of your potential savings, if there are any at all. You’ll need to know the average gas price in your area by using AAA’s gas prices website, your estimated annual mileage that you typically drive, the efficiency of your desired Tesla vehicle listed on fueleconomy.gov, and your local residential electricity cost. Obviously the key to the most savings when buying a Tesla is by driving a lot in an area with low electricity prices.
Although Tesla owns and operates the largest global, fast charging network in the world with over 45,000 Superchargers and new ones popping up constantly, traveling in a Tesla is still a different experience compared to driving a gas car. Make a list of your frequently visited locations (such as family or friends houses or vacation houses) and not only see if there are charging stops along the way. This is something I had to do when I first got my car and visited my in laws because although there was a Supercharger in between our house and theirs it was a little bit out of the way which would add about an hour to the round trip.
As much as I love the first Tesla I ever bought, my Model 3, I’m not sure if I would have bought it back when I did if I weren’t eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit. Luckily a standard Model 3 is only around $40,000 before any tax credits, but that’s still a lot money for a car for most people so even though all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles currently qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, that only applies to eligible buyers so it would behoove you to see exactly how much of that federal tax credit you are eligible for.
Having my car charge overnight while I sleep is a game changer mainly because of two reasons: 1) It saves me money by charging at the cheapest electricity rate, and 2) It saves me time because I don’t have to make inconvenient charging stops during my normal daily driving. If I didn’t have home charging and had to do all my charging at the nearby Supercharger it would be nearly five times more expensive. During your Tesla online order you can choose the optional Mobile Connector for $230 and you can use that on a normal outlet for slow charging if your daily driving is less than 50 miles per day.
Buyers who use a referral link will still get the benefits which are subject to change but as of the making of this video if you buy a Model 3 or Y using a referral link you’ll receive $500 off your purchase plus 3 months of Full Self-Driving Capability which comes to an $1100 value so don’t miss out on that.

Yes, check Fed, state, county, and city agencies for incentives and discounts. Also, be sure to check your utility that provides your electricity! We get a $0.015 credit on every kWh we use to charge our two EVs based on TOU. A penny and a half doesn’t doing like much, but we’ve saved a lot with that discount and the off peak time over the last two years we’ve had them!

Here in NJ you get $4000 off a Tesla on top of the $7,500 federal tax credit. I also bought one with a referral so my final cost was $26k which is around the same price as a Toyota Corolla

Congrats Andy on the new house. Can you make a video on what it is like to charge 2 Teslas at the same time? I just recently bought a house also. Everyone thought I was crazy to have the 1450 plug installed in the garage when I do not have an electric car yet. But I plan to get one with my next car purchase.

We are upgrading our electrical panel and putting a 30 amp or 50 amp outlet in the garage. Plus I am still planning to add a few solar panels on the garage plus an 8kw battery generator and dual fuel generator

Very jealous of the incentives in the US. I live in Victoria, Australia, We have no federal or state incentives and the state actually charges EV owners 2.6c/km driven, even on roads in other states.

Andy great video. Quick question as I am looking to buy a 2020 or 2021 Model 3. Can't afford new so used it is. LR/Dual motor with low miles. Is it worth the $4-$6k more for a 2021 just for heat pump and dual pane glass with same options? Live in Northwest Ohio so winters kinda rough. What you opinion?
@aslye
@aslye 10 ай бұрын
Heat pump will probably come in handy but I live in Northern KY (close to IN and OH) and my 2018 Model 3 (RWD, no heat pump) has been great so far in this climate. We get pretty cold winters but probably not as bad as you get though.

Andy, I want to buy a Model X, but wonder if I'm doing the right thing. My primary reason for getting an SUV is my dog (an American Fox Hound - 57 lbs.) and possibly a Sheltie (to determined - 30 lbs.). I know you have a Model Y, but would you encourage me to buy a Model X ? Gull wings looks cool. Armand

Great video. Just want to add, for potential new buyer, take the rated range with a very big handful of salt. If you only drive around town and never go over 70 mph, then it's pretty close, otherwise, expect it to be about 80% of that.

Seriously, this is something i didn’t take as serious. I bought a 2020 M3 in February with a range estimate of 250, and i’m lucky to get 190 miles charging it to 90%😭

@@3pointstance484 You will never get the rated range if you don't charge to 100%. However, the need for 100% range is very rare.

@@pprreejj Spoiler: I ended up with Model Y, yesterday evening. Primary due to the lack of "smart things" aka. the whole ecosystem around Tesla, the API to control it much better in Home Assistant, and more. Another thing which helped, was the battery technology in YSR (produced in Germany).

You only pay $0.08 a kWh?! I pay $0.33 a kWh at home in California!

Are you sure you have signed up with the proper plan of your utility company? I live in CA and am paying $0.13 per KWH with San Diego Gas & Electric in south Orange County whereby I had to sign up for the EV Plan.
@Resist4
@Resist4 10 ай бұрын
@@billwall4881 I'm on the T1 schedule so it's the same price no matter what time of day, because I don't use that much electricity and have solar panels. Going to the TOU or EV schedule won't really help me. You are on the EV plan which is really like the TOU plan so your rate varies on the time of day, so you don't get $0.13 all the time. You need to average what you use for the entire day to see your true cost.
@billwall4881
@billwall4881 10 ай бұрын
@@Resist4 Tesla allows us to schedule the charging to start at midnight and I am always fully charged by 6am when the rates go up. I charge every night thereby always getting the "Super Off Peak" rate (midnight to 6am). I never charge any other time. It is true this rate was $9 cents three years ago when I got my first Tesla. Last year it was $13 cents but I just noticed it has increased to $15.4 for this summer amount. I currently own 2 Tesla's and pay only $100 total for charging each month. The bill breaks out the different level usages.
@Resist4
@Resist4 10 ай бұрын
@@billwall4881 Okay so you are talking about only the electric rate when charging your Tesla. I see now. With that line of thought then, I charge my Tesla for free because of my solar panels, day or night.

Maintenance, good mechanic, a better battery, and in top of all to expensive. Even with this rebate from the government of The $7,500k Is still a ‘Sucker Punch’ and don’t forget when it comes time to replace the battery could cost between $10-15k depending the model. I am not saying the Tesla vehicles DONT belongs in our (Time) society, but we are not ready, Fossil Fuel still is a very important part of our live. Just think about that🤔
