Good video....Over the years (roughly 45) of riding I had a simple approach to loose bolts/nut. #1 Remove bolt. #2 Clean both threads, not just with a rag but with a solvent like brake clean. #3 Apply Loctite. #4 Torque to proper spec if known. I have found that if you do this every time eventually nothing comes loose.

Great tip about checking the battery terminal bolts every 5k miles. My bike went totally dead on me in the middle of nowhere 4 years ago. Luckily, another Harley rider who had the same experience stopped. Sure enough, the negative terminal bolt was loose. I tightened it up and was on my way. Now I check em, and put blue threadlocker on the bolts if they come loose.

Thumbs up on the battery terminal tightening !!! I almost got caught on a road trip when my bike wouldn't start. Jumped it but when I turned it off it would not start again until I jumped it again. Thought I needed and new battery. After some trouble shooting I finally went to the simplest cause and found my terminals were loose. Now every month I recheck/tighten the terminals.

Hey John. Just wanted to stop by and say thanks. Your tip on the battery terminals just helped me. Had the battery out on a tender over the winter. I didn't tighten down the positive terminal enough and she loosened up on me. Intermittent contact, so the engine would die for less than a second, then come back. All based on vibrations from specific RPMs. Was driving me crazy and I thought I had a major issue. Thanks, man. All your videos have been a huge help and very entertaining, too.

Totally nailed it on the Dyna - What you need to tighten. New Battery last season - this season - mystery die and restart while driving and at stops - started simple - loose battery terminal - not wiggle loose - but loose enough. Tightened the terminals and bingo - no more problem.

Thanks for the great entertainment and insider info that helps me keep my ride safe and fun! As a suggestion for a future video I would like to see a segment devoted to fasteners. Thread pitch, nuts , ,bolts, washers, cartikeys, etc. Electrolysis, dis-similar metals, how and when to lubricate or seal. It's a world onto its own. Torque matters. Why some fasteners are replaced everytime they are taken apart? I'm guessing when a steel bolt is installed in an aluminum part the interface is a function of torque. Over torque could distort the aluminum threads rendering the part to galling. The shifter lever as an example. installed with the correct torque and the proper lock tight it would not come loose. As a side the lock tight will keep the moisture from deteriorating the steel to aluminum dissimilar metal. In the marine industry this is a major problem. Fasteners of different materials make moisture as the air heats and cools. Then the rust or as the case with aluminum it oxidized. When you go to take them apart the aluminum threads take some abuse. A new bolt isn't going to do much good. But if a barrier sealer like lock tight is used the too metals don't bond and if cleaned with a thread tap and a bronze brush after disassembly can be used again and again. Just a suggestion

Thanks for this video John. My cousin bought a brand new 2017 Low Rider from his local SoCal dealer. It was his first Harley and he was excited as hell. Tooling down the highway to the beach with just 125 miles on the odometer, he heard and felt vibration/grinding noises from the rear of the bike which slowed down from 60 mph real fast in the passing lane of a the 3 lane highway. Thankfully there was a shoulder to his left and the bike did not fishtail too badly. And no car directly behind him! Four of his pulley bolts had backed out and hit the swingarm! Long story short the bike was trucked back to the dealer, factory was involved and after the components were shipped back to HD for analysis, they made him whole for the cost of the bike. Not surprisingly he's thankful to be alive and not planning to buy another HD anytime soon and definitely not one with that sort of pulley fastening system. Looks like the 18 Softail line continues to use that fastening method for the pulleys. Gotta be a better, safer way to do this, don't you think?

Whats really weird about the whole thing is that it's Dynas. Sure other models can come loose, but they don't. Tons of manufacturers use belts and sprockets fastened the same way. With all the Dynas on the road, it's not a giant problem. The deal is, like your buddies case, it's a serious issue, even if it doesn't effect that many bikes (as a percentage of total dynas vs those with loose bolts). Either way, I've never seen one as new as your friends do it, and I've never seen one that had proper maintenance schedules (at our shop) do it.
@vtwinsrbest6 жыл бұрын
John Maxwell Thanks for the quick response John. HD wouldn't tell him what they determined was the cause but I have to think it was improperly tightened bolts and or a lack of appropriate thread lol applied at the factory. Hope it was an isolated build oversight. Wouldn't think it would be something that's dbl checked at the dealer prior to delivery? You probably wouldn't want to retorque bolts that had thread lok previously applied.

It was back in the day a “critical fastener” meaning it would be checked. Eventually it was no longer checked, if I remember my maintenance schedules right. I get a cheat sheet during the actual job!

Hi John, I have a 2015 heritage, just like the one you showed in this video. the question that I have is in regards of changing the regular lights to LED's, running lights center and all front ones. Front ones no problems at all ! all connected and works perfectly... even the turn lights changing from white to amber (yellow) so far all great. Now replaced the center no problems there as well, brake and running light awesome.. NOW! when I go to the turn signal founded that there is NOT an 1157 socket... it is only one filament light! that means only the turn light. so I jumped a wire for running light and also ran a ground wire all the way so now having 3 wires in each light holder. I double check without connecting the LED's and all looked perfect. Making the LED outer ring for running lights and the inner core (red as well) for the turn signal, but it doesn't work, don't know what it is but When I turn the bike the running lights all leds! I have already changed the LEDs twice and it is the same problem. Any ideas?

I even tried jumping with my car like you had showed when that didn't work I got pissed and jerked the battery around a little. All of a sudden I had power to the bike. When I pressed the starter I noticed the positive battery bolt glowing red. Then it dawned on me that I probably had loose cables. I tightened them up and sure enough that was the issue. Thanks for tips and keep posting. Even though I don't ride a harley they are very entertaining.

The things that you mentioned were minor, almost trivial things. The one thing that I was truly hoping that you would mention (that almost everybody overlooks) is the tightness of the nut to the triple tree yoke bearings. This is E-X-T-R-E-M-E-L-Y important, because if these bearings are too loose, it will cause the highly dangerous "death wobble"! I have been riding for over 50 years, have owned eleven Harleys (mostly older ones, a '47, a '53, a '56, a '67, etc.) and I've always done my own repairs (except for the trannies) and I learned this when I was working on a buddie's old Sporty with an original old springer front end. After getting it running, I went for a fast test run, developed a VERY serious front end wobble and just about took out a barbed wire fence! I spent the rest of the day searching for the cause of the wobble and finally found the loose yoke bearings. Tightened them up and it cured the wobble. More people really need to know this for their own safety.

Warn't me...I have a VRod as well and love it. Like it or not it's a piece of HD history made in the now closed KC plant. But I'm lucky enough to be able to afford a Road King too.... VRods need checked too, thay all do

The KC plant is still open, just not making V Rods anymore. I own a 2016 Muscle and work right down the street from the KC plant. Great vid!

Have you ever crashed on the street? No one plans to . Wear gloves can't wrench with nubs.

I'd ALMOST rather ride without a helmet than without gloves. I've bit pavement without gloves twice and regrowing skin on my palms for 6 weeks was super painful. Once in college, and once about 20 years later. And those were on bicycles (though in both cases at > 20 MPH).

Always gloves, boots and pants, nearly always a half/cruiser helmet. 2 concussions in a couple of weeks from bike accident and football gave me amnesia once.

#6 to keep tight when you want a Harley..YOUR WALLET...way way way over priced for the product you get. You will never see a video on the same topic with other Asian and European Motorcycles, just this junk.
@tfairborne5016 жыл бұрын
Uncle Timmy funny I can tear my bike down and split cases and get it back together right (metric) but I don't have to. I don't have to worry about 5 things (more like the whole bike) to tighten. Also metric bikes don't spend all their time in the shop on the back of a trailer or broke down yet again under the overpass. Just because you dress like a gay pirate and ride a pile of garbage don't hate on a better and more reasonably priced bike. If you want to turn gas into noise without the pesky side effect of horsepower get ya a harley

tfairborne501 funny, I've had metrics and Harleys and haven't had issues with either. I spent a few years renting Harleys and none of the bikes in our fleet never had any issues.

You correct about this. I have seen a fair number of kickstands come lose and fall off. Customers also freak out over lose gas tank bolts.

My shifter came off couple weeks ago, ugh.....Soooo, would be a good idea to check that also! The "hex" bolt that keeps that little elbow (one that affixes to trans shaft) "came a loose". Haha Probably didn't help to be going 90 mph, oh well. I have a 2014 Sportster....

Good vid on the the shifter rod. I should have been watching mine closer, it just busted without warning. Just as we were heading out of the driveway thankfully. Would have been a real big time bummer if happened out on the road. Lesson learned.

In 1979 I worked in a bicycle store as a bicycle mechanic and there is where I learned how to lace and true the wheels period in 1984 I stepped up and became a motorcycle mechanic the different stamp building the wheel is those folks don't flex around like bicycle spokes you have to deliberately blind everything up. I used to build those wheels up for my boss whose father-in-law owned Brooklyn and Hempstead Harley-Davidson in New York. The good old days in the summertime we used to work on bikes until about 2 or 3 in the morning we didn't even realize it was that late

My old neighbor could true a wheel in less than 5 min. I tried it and immediately had a lot of respect for that skill lol. Just picked up my first bike. I got a 09 sportster 1200c 7k miles for 3800. Going to check motor mount bolts now. I just put amsoil in the primary and used schaeffers oil in the engine. I now bought 2 quarts of Schaeffer primary fluid. Next change my bike will be all schaeffers oil.

My 1st bike was my dad's 1938 Knucklehead and my 2nd was his 1955 Panhead , I started riding on the street daily in 1961 & would ride the knuckle to school , I've owned every motor HD has ever made and 1 thing that holds true with all HDs is check those motor mounts at every oil change , my 2012 FLSTF motor mounts have never became loose until spring of this year so 5 yes of checking paid off before I felt the vibration at 80mph , now my Shovelhead hard tail needs every nut & bolt needs checked once a month & I constantly find lose ones .
