Good point, I live in Norway 🇳🇴 and own a blobeye STI.. its properly tuned, forged internals, spec-c twinscroll turbo, reversed inlet for even lower turbo lag cuz of less piping.. power? 380 hp. Its built like that to last as long as possible, but that horsepower is more than enough on the street.. I could lose my license in a few snaps of fingertips, and going full throttle.. it doesn't take long before you are already at dangerously high speeds, so yeah.. subies are lightweight and dont really need like 500-600 hp to be fun. Hey man I got a question would I need a tune for a intercooler?
At the 1min mark, you talk about needing a tune for a CAI. In general I agree but you go on to say there no way around it…that’s not accurate. I have a 2017 STI with a PERRIN CAI. I’ve had the car for the entire life of the vehicle thus far and had the PERRIN CAI on since like week 2. I’ve never tuned it, it’s my daily/farm car. Runs perfect. Fun fact…PERRIN is the only company that made their intakes to Subaru spec’s and as a result you end up with an intake that doesn’t require a tune. I’ve spoken to PERRIN myself to confirm (4 times, 3 different people). Like I said, in general I agree with the “CAI needs a tune!” sentiment but in this case there is no need.
@nthgth2 жыл бұрын
That is very interesting. I don't want to tune my STI for fear of needing the engine warranty, but this could be the ticket. (Unless the intake has the same warranty drawback)
@dreambigaerialimaging91252 жыл бұрын
@@nthgth I wouldn’t know as I’ve not had to take it in for anything since I bought it. Nothing engine related anyhow. I know Subaru can be rough when it comes to that sorta thing but they still gotta prove the intake caused whatever issue you might have. As stated though, I’ve literally had zero issues with my engine…runs like a champ and I do indeed drive it like I stole it lol
@nthgth2 жыл бұрын
@@dreambigaerialimaging9125 cool. Does it feel any different? Or just a different sound? I'd think that if it doesn't need a tune, it doesn't significantly alter airflow so it shouldn't drive differently, but maybe the sound itself can be felt

@@nthgth no noticeable difference in my opinion but I’ve talked to guys that swear it feels like it has more pep. I disagree. Now when I swapped my exhaust out, I felt like it made a little difference maybe. Perrin stands behind the “no tune needed” for their CAI. I’ve checked and rechecked just to make sure. As far as I can tell, they are literally the only one. I never wanted to tune it but wanted it to sound nice and this was really the only way to go when researching the topic. Just to add something. I have a conversation with a over 12 years experience Subaru mechanic. The Intake change would not affect the engine. The car have a mass flow sensor. The sensor will calculate how much flow of air and the computer ajust the consumption of gas. The only thing tuning car helps is to adjust to get better performance with what you have or add.

I really like my '14 STI hatch, but 100% agree on the fact that it is not the right platform for high HP, specially on stock block. I've done my research prior to starting my build, and come to quickly realize that it takes alot to squeeze power of these flat 4 and a comfortable/reliable number is between 350-380 WHP... of course with a $10k+ budget, a built block would get you that and more.

Both make over 200hp but they are radically different in how they make that power and how they feel to operate. I agree with much of what you said. I like more subtle tasteful mods. Different but it looks stock or that is, something Subaru would have done. I see so many mods that really don't do much or even makes the car even slower/worse. (see mighty car mods videos) Cat-back exhaust doesn't do anything if you keep the small stock headers. It's said you need to increase HP by 15-20% in order to feel a difference and be truly faster. That's a 45-60 Hp increase! You will never use it on the street so don't bother unless you do regular track days. Doing any engine/exhaust mods will need to be tuned on a dyno. To make an STI faster takes a crapload of money. The best way to be fast is to sign up for racing school at a local track.

Came here to find 5 things I should never do with a wrx or sti. :Changing the intake without a tune. Excellent. :Putting lights on the front of your car. Personal preference. :Fully venting bov, bad. Don't do this. :Carbon fiber. Personal preference. :Catless exhaust system. Personal preference. But good advice if you aren't getting tuned. I would have liked to hear your thoughts on why with these 5 specific things to never do. 1.Intake without a tune is bad because the ecu needs to know what the new Maf scaling is because the metered air coming into the engine is being changed. Therefore your fuel needs are also changed. 2.Swapping your blow off valve which recirculates the air that has been measured by the Maf is bad. This means that if you vent the air to hear that sweet swish sound it isn't going to mix with the fuel that the maf asked for causing the engine to run rich momentarily. You can get an aftermarket bov that has recirculation function kept in. Go fast bits offers an adjustable bov that allows you to partially vent and also recirculate. All the way to fully venting. 3.Catless downpipe can cause boost creep because you are increasing the flow of exhaust out of the turbo and allowing the turbine to spin more freely. The stock waste gate and boost controller can have a tough time managing this. But that also applies to high flow cat down pipes as well. So it comes down to personal preference. If you change the stock downpipe at all you should be upgrading the boost control solenoid and getting a tune done. 4.Too many lights on the front of your car. While completely personal preference, it can lead to issues in the charging system. Having too many things drawing a load on the charging system can lead to issues with engine performance. The more voltage drawn away from your fueling and ignition system the more likely you can run into injectors not pulsing correctly and weak spark delivery. This isn't likely with oem lighting, but if you're slapping those giant light bars on adding rally style fog lights, a sub woofer and 3 amps, you can see how this can lead to issues later on. 5. Carbon fiber. Completely personal preference. If you have the money and want to slap carbon fiber everywhere that's up to you. This isn't something you should never do. If it were me adding one more to the list. Never launch your wrx or sti without slipping the clutch. The awd system isn't likely to spin the tires and you're just going to shock the shit out of your drive train. Also roll into boost after 3k rpm. Don't just jam the throttle in low rpm as it puts a lot of load on the engine. Super clean Sti, appreciate the content. 👍

I got a 2014 wrx limited, engine blew up shortly after I got it from the dealership so I went with a IAG Stage 2 block and got it built and tuned what do you think the best next step would be (Currently Looking at Getting the IAG stage 2 kit, and the IAG Front mounted intercooler) or should i upgrade other internals first? I’m pretty new when it comes to Subarus. Just wanted your opinion because I don’t really have anyone else to ask.
@Autofreakgarage2 жыл бұрын
When you get an iag block, the internals are already upgraded. It depends on what your goals are.
@InsaneAIM2 жыл бұрын
@@Autofreakgarage my plan down the road is to push around 400whp but I didn’t know if I should upgrade like the fueling system or just wait until I really need to do it and just get the intercooler and the stage 2 kit for my block (jpipe, cold air intake etc.) and build up after that

Absolutely would. But wouldn’t recommend them for a daily if you live in an environment that sees all types of weather. They could withstand it, but it would be a sad day if they got damaged from inclement weather.

My coworker had 2015 STI. First his trans blew now his engine blew. Barely making 300HP. Too much money for blowbru. He did catless downpipe with tune.
@Autofreakgarage4 жыл бұрын
I would love to know what modifications he has on the car when this happened. My guess is he went stage 2 (possibly with an intake and catless) and didn't have any supporting fueling mods to accommodate the increased power. To blow a transmission on an STI is pretty uncommon. I would assume this fella launched the car 10 times a day and/or a very inexperienced manual transmission driver. I could be wrong though. There are instances when cars have had issues completely stock. However, that goes along with any performance car.

Your STI is super clean. Are you having rock chip issues or is your paint flawless up close too? My paint is getting wrecked. I’ve added gravel guards but the hood and front bumper are starting to look rough on my 19 STI. Do you have tips/experience with paint correction?

I currently have a 2014 gli 6 speed on stage 2 with bolt ons, I’m looking to trade up for a 2015-17 wrx later this year but I want to kinda do the same build with the wrx that I have with my gli now. But based on your video they seem super finicky lol, it would be my daily driver so I need it to be reliable. Cobb has the stage 2 package but would I need anything more than that for reliability concerns? I wouldn’t want to spend more than 4K on mods after purchasing the car and definitely don’t want to blow it up lol

@Autofreakgarage4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can run a burble tune with stock cats, but wouldn’t recommend running it 24/7. Doing so will end up blowing the cats out. It can also cause premature turbo wear if running all the time. No you do not need fueling upgrades for stage 1.

The only mod I’ve got on my Bugeye WRX is a full TBE (catless). I’ve been experiencing boost creep I think? I’m not really sure. Sometimes it pushes up to 20 then will bounce back down to 10, then 15 and back down to 10. Is it recommended to get a tune to fix this or is it sounding more like a boost leak?
@Autofreakgarage4 жыл бұрын
You’re not running a tune? You have to have tune on the car if you are not running the stock downpipe. If you are catless and tuneless you are asking for trouble.

Get the car on a dyno and see what it’s pushing. Just because one car made xxx power doesn’t mean the next car will make the same power with the same mods.
