Hi so I’m taking dt designs and for our homework we need to find a job we like in the subject so I knew exactly where to come! So what would be a fun job is fashion designing that’s fun to do and pays high?

Hey, well there are a few things you can do in design first figure out if you want to do mens or womens and target brands you like, I’m not sure on the pay for internships as I did a unpaid one😔 but I think it’s around 250/300 a week all depends on what your doing

Can someone get a job as a fashion designer without the degree? what if the skills and portfolio is top notch? do you think someone could still get hired?

You would not get past the CV stage I imagine without knowing someone within the company you want to work for. Or by having amazing work experience on your CV to back up your skills.

Hey!!! Yes you can get a job as a fashion designer without a degree, it will be tough and it would need some great drawing cad and garments skills but I have friends that worked for a high street brand since they were 16, at 20 a job came up as a admin assistant at that company she went for it and got it, at first she was mainly working on excel and chasing samples in and residing to emails. Her designer at the time taught her illustrator and later she got promoted through the ranks, It’s about thinking in a different way but a degree would open a lot of doors, or you could start your own brand ?

There are different routes not just university, there are apprenticeships, you can apply for a job in the office and move over when a entry level position comes available, working your way up from store or starting your own brand. But a degree really will help

is your business in fashion? if not it might be worth reaching out to some independance and ask if they need help so you can gain experience and then start to apply for roles in your field?

Sorry but would you not be offended if someone walked into your shop and started taking photos of your stock without making any purchases and just using your store as a personal library for design ideas? Especially when you invested a lot of money and time into that business to have it ripped off by a fast fashion high street chain?

Hey great comment and observation, inspiration comes from everywhere, it could be a button, a fabric weight, a texture, I would never advocate any designer going into a shop taking a photo and saying copy this! There is a myth in fashion that if you change something 7 times it doesn’t come under copyright infringement or intellectual property infringement THIS IS NOT TRUE! The main point of inspiration trips is for inspiration the photos are there to jog your memory on a fabric quality, a new fit, a buttons texture you really like again it’s not to go in and rip off independent designers to sell to the mass market, I as a designer would never do that.
