Hi Reuben. So glad I found your channel. I’m also based in Cape Town and recently started my veggie patch. However, I’ve noticed that my soil doesn’t drain. The water just sits on the surface. The soil is fine sand. Do you have a tip of what to do or should I just go for a slightly raised garden bed and import suitable well draining soil?

Hey Margaret! It sounds like you're dealing with a common issue in sandy soil - poor drainage. One effective solution is indeed to go for a slightly raised garden bed and use well-draining soil. This can greatly improve the drainage and aeration of your garden and creating a healthier environment for your plants. If you're interested in improving the existing soil, you can also amend it with organic matter (compost and manure) to enhance its structure. However, this might take some time. I have three raised beds, but I have a portion of my garden that is inground section with sandy soil. I put compost and manure on a regular basis as a mulch to improve the soil structure. I came across this video last week, while planning to plant pumpkin seeds. I planted 2 of them directly from the ground last week, only one has sprouted so beautifully. I'm so happy because it's seeds from a store bought pumpkin, I was just testing if something will happen. I've also began collecting kitchen waste in a 20L bucket. Thanks so much for the motivation to start! I'll see where this takes me!
