5 Tips for Helping Your Kids to Come to Know and Love God

I’m often asked questions like “What children’s Bible do you use?” and “How do you teach your kids about God?” So I decided to make this video that shows us having real-life family devotions, and also gives some background and explanation as to why we do this with our kids!
As parents, we’ve been entrusted with the care of precious children whose souls will live on for eternity either with God or apart from Him. It is both our duty and delight to do all we can to raise them to know and love God, and one way we can help point them to Jesus is through having regular times of family devotions.
In the first half of this video, I share the “why” behind having family devotions, answering 5 questions:
1. Why family devotions?
2. What is your structure?
3. How long does it take?
4. How do you keep their attention?
5. How do you get back on track if you’ve let it slide?
Then in the second half of the video, I bring you into our living room to join Ben and I and our kids for Seewald family devotions. I delve more into the “how”- “How do you practically carry this out?” and break down our 5 goals for family worship, which are Singing, Scripture Memory, Bible Reading, Catechism, & Prayer.

Wow! That is so awesome! The Lord has shown me that He truly is an awesome God!! This is just one of His great works!!! He has lovingly compelled me to add this Bible verse… “He who does not know love, does not know God. For God is love.” -1 John 4:8💗

Jessa, what you and Ben are doing by sharing your love of God with your children is the greatest blessing they could ever receive. Reading God's Word, praying, asking questions, memorization of scriptures, and singing joful to God..AMAZING gifts. Praying for your sweet little family, and for continual blessings for you all! 🙏🙏💗💗

This was one of the best videos you’ve put out yet! So insightful. I watched it then had my husband watch it with me. I left wanting to incorporate hymns and more consistent catechisms and verse memorization. Love that you showed your kids (and Ben) for real life examples. Very inspiring and encouraging. I hope you put out more videos like this! Thank you for sharing.

Jessa, Thank you so much for this! As the owner and director of a private Christian school, I can attest to your thought that parents sometimes defer their personal responsibility of Bible teaching and devotion to a church or Christian school. Every morning during the school year, I present a Bible reading, devotion and prayer with my students. Often I learn that no one in the home has established a home devotion or prayer time. God bless you for your example and teaching! PS So heartwarming to hear Henry, Ivy, and Spurgeon singing so joyfully and reciting scripture! ❤🙌

As a mom to a 3 year old, that didn't grow up up in a very Godly home, i'm trying so hard to make sure my son follows God. it's hard because i'm not perfect, either, but i learn so much every day and i'm trying so hard. This seemed like i just sat down with you talking as friends and i really appreciate this video, as you're in a similar season of life❤️

Thank you for being faithful to the Lord in this area. This video has convicted my heart about my slackness in this area. As my children have gotten older, I've really let things slip with family devotion. This has encouraged me to "get back on track" . Keep faithfully serving and training your little ones. As they grow older, they tend to go different directions and our time with them is more limited.

I loved this video, Jessa. It was sweet to see your young children learning about God. As you said, even Ivy (while moving all around 😁) is learning. A friend's 2-3 year old granddaughter used to stay with me for days at a time. I said a simple blessing before we ate ("Thank you God, for all the good things You do for me"). Because she was so young, I didn't know what that meant to her. One day after we said the blessing, I heard her saying..."and Thank you for my toys...". She also liked a praying hands necklace that I often wore. I told her it was hands praying to God. One day she asked me what a model of a church was. I told her, that's where you learn about Jesus & God. She jumped up, ran into my bedroom & returned with my necklace...saying "This, put it on me!" She was no older than three years old. It amazes me how much seeps into their little hearts & souls, at such a young age. Just wanted to say Jessa, that your family is (and has been for a very long time), such a blessing to me. 🙏💞

This video has really helped me. Even if a person doesn't have kids, or if their kids are grown, it encourages us to pray more and read the Bible more and trust in God, etc. It's not too late. This video is a reminder that we need to have these things as a part of our lives, with or without kids. Not everyone had Christian or loving parents, and it's a good possibility that these types of people did not raise their kids as Christians or did indeed make multiple mistakes raising them. (That's me.) I love Jessa and her parents, and I'm grateful for everything they have taught me through their examples.

19:39 - "We're being funny, Mommy". Priceless. Not that I thought it was okay for her to be funny during be a serious time, but she didn't know better - she's barely 2. The point is, she is happy and loved. The way her parents love her shows in her happy personality. She has love and confidence. So the point is, she wasn't trying to be disruptive, she was just showing how much love and happiness and security and confidence she has, courtesy of loving parents. I wish I had of had parents like this.

The greatest impact on children is when parents r truly living a Christian life, even when nobody is around. If people are one way in public and not living it at home, kids see that and it affects them into adulthood. Devotions r great, too!

Living the word is most important. My parents never taught me scripture verses and never talked about God & Jesus. We did not pray or sing. But they lived Godly lives, attended church, sent us to Sunday school where we sang, prayed & learned verse. I never questioned the word of God because my parents showed us his way by example; living such an honest, hard working and neighborly life.
