Yes! Oslo the star! One very important caveat - when your dog reaches their senior years, PLEASE no more long or strenuous hikes! A keen hill walking friend of mine literally walked his aged lab to death! She passed on the trail unable to cope with heat, steep gradient and altitude gain :-( Older dogs are ok with just a stroll in the park, they just want to get out of the house for a bit. I constantly see people with old dogs who are taking strain on their regular hikes, it's so unfair. Realise that it is THEIR walk you are taking them for and tailor it according to their capabilities, not to your ambitions of conquering that distant peak! Love the videos, scritches to Oz.

we love oslo, and its great to see such responsible dog owners, unfortunately not all are the same as i see lots of irresponsible dog owners in the peaks, off the leads when they shouldnt be, not cleaning up after them etc, i love dogs but the mrs is scared of them, and what some people dont realise is a farmers are quite in their rights to shoot a dog if they attack livestock, brill vid by the way and give oslo a kiss for me 😘

Great to see you float Oslo's meals aswell, its so important for barrel chested dogs as they tend to woooof everything & anything down... not sure in Oslo's case but my boy is a Dalmatian & they are prone to uriney stones, and just by floating meals can completely stop it as they consume alot more water hence everything washes through beautifully. Great vlog.

My daughter has a dog (Eiko) who is Oslo's absolute double in almost every respect (apart from the boy bits - she's a girl!) Gorgeous dogs, but yes, when that hound trail instinct kicks in, she can disappear for hours if she's not on the lead - you're very wise to keep him on his. Randomly enough, we also lost our youngest in 2019 to cancer. I feel for your loss very much, but yes, dogs really do help and what a wonderful life you are giving him x

Really enjoyable video, we have two whippets that we hike with and I think we carry more clothes for them than ourselves as they get cold so easily. We sometimes even attach a few hand warmers under their coats if it’s freezing. One of our dogs limits is boggy ground, he just won’t walk on it which once resulted in about a 4 mile fireman’s carry.

Another great video Athena, we love watching! This one in particular is so important, I think a lot of dog owners reckon they should be off the lead to enjoy a walk. However, having confidence to keep them on the lead for large chunks of a walk is safer for both dog and owner. Having safe areas for off lead running is great advice 👍🏻

Great video Athena..use full tips. We have a lTibetan Terrier they were bred to herd sheep in the Mountains of Tibet. They have large flat paws ideal for herding in snow and their hind legs are the same as a rabbit which allows them to jump up mountains spring in and out of hills and valleys. The Tibetan Monks kept them and they were protected by the people. They believed the spirits of the dead monks were re born into the dogs. He is our ideal hillwalking companion.

Beautiful vlog Athena in a lovely area of the country with lots of good sensible information. For information I would mention that flexi leads come in various sizes and weights dependant on individual dog weight, the pro being the longest and heaviest, also on a legal and safety point all dogs should be secured when travelling in a car for their and your safety (this is a legal requirement and you could be fined if stopped by police, or worse if involved in an accident).

Great video. My last dog was a Rottweiler. He had his own back pack. When we went wildcamping he'd carry half the tent and his food !! He was so fit and strong. Now have a Parsons Russell Terrier. He's very lean with short hair and really suffers in the cold so he's got an array of coats. One thing I would mention is think about their paws on rough ground. My Rotty had ruffwear boots as I found that particularly on certain peaks in Scotland there were many very sharp small stones around. BTW my Parsons has done Crib Goch and a couple of grade 1 scrambles

Was a backpacking guide for a few years in British Columbia Canada....faithful spot my black lab carried 25 to,35 pounds for a decade until he was almost 12...lived till almost 15 but i only let him carry his water the last 3 years..his dad was top field trial dog in Canada twice and placed third in north America... the vet knicknamed him QUADZILLA....so jacked people thought he was part Rottweiler or pitbull A tip....when you get a dog pack fill it full of plastic bags full of crumpled newspaper so they get used to the extra width on trails....then start adding waterbottles to both sides slowly to get them used to the weight and width. This will save a lot of broken packs.....and bring a speedstitcher for rips and broken zippers and at least a dozen ziprties in different sizes to replace broken buckles etc....also get tough dog booties because shale slides rough granite and beaches will rip your dogs feet apart He passed 2 months before my first boy.....2 little boys now and can't wait until they are old enough for a dog....BEAR SPRAY and teach your dog not to chase game.....it will save your lives in bear country

Another fab video Athena, I bet Oslo absolutely loves it in your new home with all the fells to run in and most importantly the scents! You're advice was very good, I've seen countless dog owners being quite irresponsible sadly, me and Rachel have been bothered by dogs when we've stopped for lunch loads of times and their owners often turn out to be real arseholes! lol The worst instance I witnessed was in the Quiraing when a couple of people let their german shepherd off and it galloped right to the bottom of the fell and worried a lamb in a gully for everyone to see. Absolutely apalling. you know Oslo has an instinct to chase so you're responsible by keeping him on a lead but there are so many people out there who simply don't seem to care! Anyway have a lovely evening! - Martin

Thanks for the great video. I have a few questions. How old is Oslo now? Also what about COWS? I'm really concerned about walking through cow fields with a dog because cows don't like dogs and can get aggressive if you have a dog, even if it's well behaved and on a short lead. How do you manage this? There are several dangerous cow attacks on humans every year in the UK. I steer well clear of any areas where there are cows roaming but that does limit walks quite a lot in the UK. My staffie prefers playing with his ball to long walks which I think he finds a little boring. I get such a kick out of seeing Oslo's such obvious love of the open countryside and long walks. Its a good dog for you guys! Oh one more question. Finding shade! Isn't that hard in the hills? There aren't many trees. My staffie gets hot really easily and I really have to pick cooler times and shady walks so as not to overheat him.

Lovely video...👍. Just a point re retractable dog leads...only use a tape style one and only ever attach to harness and never collar. It isn’t as dog friendly here in the states. You can’t hike with a dog in most national park I’ve been in...Yellowstone, Tetons, Bryce Canyon, etc..
