Well presented tutorial, well done! - Out of curiosity, why use the normal element over wire colour and/or material ID? Would it not be easier and far less time consuming to use those for picking individual elements in a scene?

Because the point of the method is to be able to select some side of the object. This is useful when you want to correct, for example, the light in post-processing: In this case, it is the side of the object that is important, such as left, right, top or bottom.

On the levels at the beginning there was data, you have crushed the highlights. Photoshop only has histogram scopes which is one of the worst. Something like AfterEffects or Fusion are much more professional.
