Thank-you for your videos on the a5100. Hardly anybody is covering that camera these days. I'm really digging your channel! Here's my question... Did you find a way to deal with the skin smoothing bug when recording to hard drive via HDMI? I keep hoping that somebody somewhere smarter and more experienced than me has either found or performed a hack. No joy. (Yet! I'm hoping you hold some secrets!) For the time being.., I ordered some FD mount converters and a few old Canon FD lenses which ought to make switching off the skin smoothing option possible. (Apparently, you can't do that with the kit lens unless you're zoomed right up to the limit of optical zoom. That's not really workable in the video studio environment I've built. I've got three fixed position cameras.) Though.., old lenses from decades past are pretty fun! I spent $150 and got three cool looking ones. I can't wait for them to arrive in the mail! No auto focus, but if your subject is sitting in one spot, then that shouldn't be a problem. Fingers crossed. (Though best would be a software/firmware solution).

@@StarTrekDiscoveryPod Well.., it turns out my particular setup has the a5100 cameras far enough away from the stationary subjects (sitting in one spot), that in order to frame them correctly, the regular kit lens has to tip just out of the range provided by the optical zoom and into the edge of digital zooming, where the problem goes away (when using the correct settings; you can look those up on other videos). The critical distance is about 8-10 feet. So for me, it seems to be a non-issue. The a5100 cameras are otherwise really great! Cheap (comparatively for Sony) and with all the right features for excellent video over HDMI. I'm still waiting for my FD manual zoom lenses to show up, but I don't think I'll need to use them. If I need closer shots, then they ought to be useful.

Thanks for your question - It depends what type of photography your interested in. The Samyang 12mm is a great inexpensive wide angle lens, which is great for landscapes, I've made a video about this lens here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJykdKpmqN16jMk

I bought a 28-70mm and A 50mm 1.8 really cheap. $175 and $150, both used but perfect. I think there is a 55-210 that can be bought in your price range too.

I just got my camera but how you deal with the overheat problem? Apparently is a common issue to Sony's cameras 😕

It's always a problem with this camera, for me it overheats after 20-25 mins which is usually fine for what I do. You can use can external battery source which helps.

Hi, thanks for this vid. I just got this camera brand new, I've worked out how to transfer pics but I'm still having issues with transferring vids. I had recorded a tutorial before seeing this vid so I hadn't set up camera and recorded in adv HD format. So now can't transfer to laptop and edit... Its been such a hassle... Any tips pls?

In image quality settings , JPEG and FINE are the same quality. Does fine means same to JPEG ? because i don't need a raw file . I rarely edit pictures. Kindly reply. Thank you

Hi, FINE is JPEG format and higher quality than using STANDARD (which is also JPEG) so if you don't need RAW images use FINE. Thanks for watching.
