We just traveled with our cat from Missouri to Florida. Here’s a tip: To eliminate odor completely and keep the car clean, buy a shallow, long Tupperware container with a lid and use it as a litter box. Whenever the cat poops and pees, you can immediately clean the poop out and put the lid back on, or if you need to continue driving, just put the lid back on immediately and it will stop the smell.

Awesome video, thanks! Just a couple tips I wanted to add :) I like feline pine as a larger-grained litter. My cat’s already used to it but some cats don’t really like it and may need a transition period. Also I totally recommend leaving your carrier out leading up to the trip and getting your cat familiar with it (so they don’t associate it with stressful events). I give my kitty treats in it every day or two to make him go in it regularly. I just took him on his first little practice car ride and he did really well. I’m going to keep taking him on drives and slowly increase the duration so he knows that it doesn’t always have to mean going to the vet or a new home. I may also try letting him roam around the car while I’m driving but only if I know I can get him back in his crate (I have nightmares of him getting loose outside the car and chasing him around a gas station 😬)
@HiroKitty2 ай бұрын
I definitely agree with exposing them to the crate at all times. My cat loves to just sleep in it and basically treats it like another box. He's perfectly fine with his carrier

I envy you. Four years ago, we traveled from AR to NY state with two cats and it was a nightmare. The drive took two fulls days. One cat cried most of the way and when we got to the hotel, neither one of them would eat, drink or use their makeshift litter box we made. And now we are talking about another possible move, maybe to AZ or CA and I just don't see how they would tolerate that. The travel carriers we bought for them were much larger than the usual ones we use to take them to the vet, so they had plenty of room. It was quite traumatizing for them. Or maybe more so for me and my husband!

Temari305 I just drove from Nevada to Florida with my cat. Just me and her. 3 1/2 days in a car! I kept her in the carrier while driving because she was all over the car. Trying to get up under the dash, under my feet, etc. Just not safe. I also got some calming treats and spray at the pet store that seemed to help a little. I found a list of pet friendly hotels online before leaving, so I knew what hotel chains were accepting. I got her a smaller litter box than her usual one, just to make it easier going in and out of hotels. I also kept it behind the seat, because I would let her out of the carrier when I stopped for lunch, gas, etc. I would pull over, sit in the car and eat while she stretched her legs some. Then back in her carrier when it was time to drive again. I never let her out of the carrier unless we stayed in the car together, or were in the hotel room. The first day was rough. She screamed the entire time, and drove me to insanity. I only drove about 4-5 hours that first day to get her used to what was happening, by the 3rd day she was in routine. Car carrier by day, free roam of the hotel room at night. I think letting her roam around the hotel room was what saved us both. It gave her a chance to roam and me a chance to relax at night from driving all day. Hope this helps. Good luck and safe travels.

Lucky for you to have a calm kitty like pippen. My cat (PJ) is not so much on car rides. So what I was told to do is get a calming spray that reduces the cat's stress with some hormone of some kind. My boyfriend and I are about to road trip the Western states and I've been begging him to let my cat come with us, I've been so worried that he wont enjoy it but I'm gonna do my best to get him well used to the jeep before we even start. I am not going to force him to take this 3 month trip with us if he doesn't seem happy, so I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure he can handle it and even enjoy it hopefully, otherwise we will have to turn around when he's had enough.

I guess you could put a hessian sack or something similar over the back of the seat to protect it a little?

My cat always throws up in the car and I feel so bad and I feel like she’s miserable but I’m doing a 22 hour drive so I feel like maybe I should get a pill that will make her fall asleep for a little while so she’s not so stressed? I don’t know if that’s a good idea or not

My cat cries out and even pukes in as little as 30 minutes of driving. I hope the vet can give me a safe drug to make my kitty sleep through the 9 hour trip.

My cats are shell shocked for weeks after a long car trip they look like my uncle that lost all his buddy’s in nam. Maybe letting them stay out of carrier might help.

We travelled with 5 cats from Illinois to Colorado. 2 days journey with 1 night stop. Well that was the plan but ended up stopping 2 nights and they did great. However they did 💩 couple of times but mostly when we had stopped in the hotel room. Key is that you as their parent need to keep calm and they will pick up on it and stay calm as well.

@Perfect in Ar-Zone yes, they were free roaming. However if you think one or two may not get along then I would separate them or out them in a cage. We had 2 vehicles so I had 4 with me free roaming, 1 was with my husband in the haul. There were few skirmishes the first hour but they eventually learned to just pick a corner and sleep. You must stay calm and collected and be prepared with wet wipes, puppy pads. We did not feed them during while driving. They only got fed and watered in hotel room. I wish you good luck on your journey and at your destination 😻
