Just wanted to let you know that this video changed my life. After viewing, I got myself a horn, a teacher and joined a New Horizons band. I have been loving the sound of the horn since I heard it in the theatre in 1977 Star Wars. And now I can (kinda) make that sound! And play with others! What a joy!! I can't describe how much this has given my soul. Thank you for that encouragement to try.

I played the trumpet as a kid, discovered rock guitar at 11. Right after high school started playing the clubs, and for 20 years was a performing rock guitar player singer. During that time developed a love for the Horn after hearing the theme to Jurassic Park. Now I’m in my 50’s, my Dad passed and left me 2 of his prized trumpets. I’m really thinking of realizing a dream of playing the French Horn, and performing in a community orchestra and my parish. How did you find learning it ? At what stage did you feel ready to perform ? What kind of horn did you get ? Thx for any info B Snowden 😊

Thanks David - you have been an inspiration to me. I played the horn in 8th and 9th grade which for me was 1967-68. Now at 68 I have taken up the horn again and in the age of KZbin I'm really enjoying the challenge of getting back in to it. Sure its only Twinkle Twinkle little Star, but its a start. Thanks Again Rob

Played French horn from 6-12 grade. 5 years later now I own my own French horn. Love it and was dying to play again. Want to join an orchestra because I have a huge range. And it all sounds great.

im switching from clarinet to french horn in the fall! How are you finding it?
@IM_A_BISH7 ай бұрын
@@itsaldrena It's pretty easy until you realize there's 50 notes for one fingering. The embouchure is the most tricky part, but other than that- get yourself a fingering chart and you're good. :D

I will be showing this to all my 4th and 5th grade band kids, not to mention my horn kids of course. Thanks for your words of encouragement for the younger generation. It’s better when the kids hear what I say from someone else, especially about practicing! 🙂 Cheers! And wish I could attend your Holiday Brass like usual at Midwest Clinic, but alas, I’m not in Chicago until Thursday!

These are really tips that anyone who plays the French horn can't avoid. A suitable French horn, a trustworthy teacher, a perseverance can insist on practicing every day... I have been playing French horn for 10 years, I will continue to play, I hope one day I can meet you, David Cooper! Thank you for bringing the horn concerto and sonata, I learned a lot from it...🤩🤩🤩

I play trumpet in an amateur symphonic orchestra. More and more I get frustrated that the rotary trumpet seems a must for the German romantic sound and then there is the need for a baroque trumpet now too. Both instruments are very expensive. Aside from that, the trumpet is in Belgium mostly popular for jazz and big band if one wants to have jobs. So being able to improvise and play lead (high) is a must too. It's a strenuous instrument IMHO , I would never be a street musician with a trumpet. Playing for hours?? I just can't. So I see how a French Horn can happy a happy marriage till high age with all the other, more aristocratic instruments in our orchestra and physically it's less hard. I love tone, looking for it, trying new fingerings for optimal intonation all the time on trumpet too so I am about to give up further ambitions on trumpet.(keeping it though) I think about buying a cheap F horn for beginners (500 euro) and normally with such a deep mouthpiece, the construction on the horn should be forgiving. Perhaps some notes will be more out of tune then on an expensive instrument.

Uh, sorry David...but since you managed to bumble gaining tenure at Chicago after doing the same in Berlin, you may want to change your opening line.
