Hi Rachel, nice video :) I would like to add some feedback from my personal experience. As a software engineer and product manager I always have found annoying designers that don't understand the platform nor the technology. I do agree that designers doesn't need to code but, in my opinion, they should really understand the platform UI/UX guidelines (for iOS, Android, or whatever you are doing), they should know which components are available natively in the platform and they should have - at least - a notion of how complex are different design patterns. I find very often designs that look great on InVision, but as soon as the developers look at then they will say "that view hierarchy doesn't make sense" or the typical "we don't have radio buttons in iOS" 😅. One of the biggest problems when a designer is very good from a visual point of view but not that good from the software point of view is that he loses the vision that the budget is limited. "Your designs might look great, but developers would need 3 months to create them and we have assigned two weeks for this feature." Regards from Spain :)

Do you have any recommendation on how designers can understand the guidelines for IOS and Android?
@Rubenenmoto

@@preciousmrakpor4622 I always recommend reading the docs. Apple has hundreds of pages on how iOS works. The same for Google and other platform. It looks obvious, but most of the designers will say that they can’t learn every platform 🤷‍♂️. Or that they don’t want to “constraint” to some predefined designs. As Rachel said, speak to the programmer, as much as you can. And when the say something cannot be done, ask them to explain why and what would they suggest as an alternative. And finally, use the platform in your everyday life! Even if it is annoying having different phones with different sizes and OS. Regards!

Tip #2 is such a simple and effective technique, but it's often underrated. Love that you clarified how studying great products doesn’t necessarily mean browsing through Dribbble or Behance 😅 thanks for this, Rachel!

Hello, Rachel! Great video as always :) One question may be bit off topic: have you ever designed a horizontal scroll website? Maybe you have a video about how to create a design in figma for a horizontal scroll? Are there any differences from a designer's perspective, except that your frame is horizontal? ^^ Thanks in advance!

Hi Rachel! Thanks for this video. I'd like to ask, do product designers only work on apps?
@rachelhow
@rachelhow 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! :) Digital product designers (also known as ui/ux designers) work on digital products, which includes apps, websites, or any digital interfaces. This includes touch screen interfaces when you order food in Mcdonald's, Tesla's car dashboards, or even the interface of a treadmill in the gym.
