Such calm and respectful information. Thank you from the south coast of the UK. We get huge rain from the atlantic ocean over Winter, cold winds from the North but very little snow. Our coldest temp is probably 5/6 degrees C. We all have different challenges but I think that your tips are useful to us all in the Northern hemisphere.

Thank you for your question. I just used the Microsoft paint app to make the picture. If I can't find the visuals I need I usually end up creating them however humble they may look. Subscriptions to stock media sites get very expensive so I make my own drawings when I need to. The effects I added with my film editing program. Thank you for being here on the channel!

Great information! Do you have any suggestions on how to prevent soft shell eggs. I don’t know which chicken it is but I’ve got 2 eggs this week with no shells. I use flaked oyster shell by Small Pet Select. It is available 24/7 to my chickens. I also use a 16% layer feed. My chickens are giving turkey & ham pieces once a week. They do receive treats like mixed vegetables, corn, blueberries alternating daily in small amounts

Thank you for your question. It’s excellent you’ve provided your chickens with oyster shell supplement as soft shells can be a sign of calcium deficiency. To begin I would start by reducing treats to investigate. If you’ve been giving treats every other day, try extending that time to 2 or 3 days between treats so your flock is getting the majority of their nutrition from their complete layer food. You can also bake and crush eggs shells and mix them into a mash with their regular food (create mash by adding chicken food and water) to create a calcium rich food mixture for them. Make sure any egg components you feed to your chickens are well processed and not recognizably in egg shape because this can cause egg eating behavior. I use the egg shells from hard boiled eggs crushed in a food processor. There are also high calcium layer food brands. You can try a bag of this style of feed to see if it helps. Stress can also cause soft shells from time to time. Frequent movement, flock changes, dehydration, or extreme weather can all cause stress in chickens. My initial guess is that your flock may just be enjoying their treats and neglecting their complete layer food which can cause a nutritional imbalance and soft shells.
