5 Tips To Help You Get Started With The U-Bass

As a u-bass player for several years now ...is it a ton of fun? Yes, absolutely! I bought a u-bass due to health issues. It's size and weight allowed me to play bass again. I grew to love both the playability and the tone. I have since had a custom 30" scale bass built and also bought and modified a p bass. I love them both and practice with both but a day doesn't go by that I don't pick up the u-bass simply because it's a joy to play and listen to. So, you don't have to think of it as simply something to start with. Trust me it holds it own as an instrument and is plenty versatile. I believe I have bought eleven basses over time now ...and overall for me as far as value, playability & tone, the u-bass ranks personally as my best purchase and yes I am over the health issues that restricted my playing in the past. Am I a u-bass fan ...Yes, absolutely!

I was an previous owner of a Kala UBass. I was interested in your comments regarding the Steel string UBass. I was not aware of this. I assume this model bass has a strengthened neck for the additional tension. I sold my UBass due to the finger roll of the rubber strings. I am interested in the model number of the steel string version. Thx.

I know you posted 10 months ago but.. A: There is very little tension to begin with. B: These are the strings it should be fine. Just change em out. Kala Flatwound U•BASS 4-String Set by Gallistrings (KA-BASS-4FW)

Interesting that you have posted this video. I just started playing bass at the request of an "old farts" band. One of them has a U bass which I started on. A fun little instrument to learn on or just use as your bass. I have since moved on to a Mikro bass only because of the 12 fret limitation. (I also don't like playing borrowed instruments). The U bass is much lighter in weight, makes a 1 -2 hr. gig easier. Great video and assessment of the U Bass. BTW, learning much from your channel and "inching" closer to joining to your Bass Lab,

Can I change rubber strings on Kala u bass for steel strings.

Yes. If you're not familiar with truss adjustment you might want to have luthier set it up for you. I have a Denver fretless ubass and I like the old jazzy sound of the walking bass so I use Aquila Thunder Blacks.
