I totally agree with you on #4. Even though everyone doesn't have a knack for singing, our voices still help us connect with the music since it's pretty much the *first* instrument we were born with.

Dude i never realized that i had that slash thumb going on in some of my chord shapes! I always wondered why i had to consentrate so hard to make them clear. Thanks for the tip, seriously, helped me conquer the first section of Lagrima. Thanks a lot!

Great tips. I would add a little more flexibility for left hand thumb placement. Certainly not peeping out from behind the neck, but different thumbs close in differently toward the fingers. I'm a bit more toward fingers 2&3, but still on the middle of the neck generally. Also, I love the silly background music as well.

I feel like the best thing that can be encouraged for playing is to play your own music. Covers are great for learning, but the end goal is to write your own music no matter how "good" or "bad" it is. Overall playing improves drastically with application and understanding of music theory in general. The earlier you start the more satisfying all the years of practice become.

When I was in my early 20s, a very talented bass player gave me a couple of lessons. He said the same thing re the 'thumb peeking above the neck'. I remembered this experience after watching your well-done video. Today, I played in front of a mirror; but this time it wasn't to see how cool I looked with the guitar. This time, I actually noticed that the 'Fonzie-Thumb' insisting on center-stage at about 50% of the time. I always feel like I have to hold the neck up while I play, and AT THE SAME TIME, I must move my left hand along the fretboard. This could be why my thumb is high. I have to let the neck rest in the crook between thumb and index finger. Anyway, if I try to stop this thumb from peeking out, I might have to learn everything over from scratch. Then I go to check out one of my favorite classical guitar players. Andrew York! He's got the Fonzie-thumb too! Perhaps you'll give me a pass for now? I can't get that thumb under control. Also, isn't it time to tell your viewers/students that you were once the closer for the San Francisco Giants during their 3 World Series victories?

Seriously - such a good video. I never comment on youtube videos, but I had to say a loud "Thank You" for explaining the more intricate part of playing guitar. I am so happy not to hear the clicked statements of "practice every day" or "use a metronome" as if that was not stated 1000000 times before. It feels great hearing some new insight into playing classic guitar. I've played electric now for ages and fell out of touch with my classic guitar, and your tips really did help me out. Thanks for the advice and cheers, hope you have a good one!

An important one: save up at least 5 large and get a good instrument with a spruce top. It will do marvels to your playing results and motivation to pick up the guitar and practice.

Excellent advice. I would have added warm up and stretch exercises, away from the instrument. I have specific question. I am designing a system for 'jazz' on the banjola - (Irish mandola body with a 5 string banjo neck), including positions etc. The span between frets are similar to the guitar, though the neck is not as wide (distance between strings is smaller). I'm applying classical guitar technique to the left land. And here's my question: Is it ok for the left pinky and ring fingers to skip a fret occasionally, i.e. spanning 3 frets? My arpeggios tend to occasionally do this, though I don't see many people doing this. I noticed it's somewhat difficult to keep the thumb relaxed in this situation.

Thanks for sharing the details pertaining to nails. My teacher does not use nails but I like the sound of the strings with nails. Oh! What a chore it is to grow my nails. Some people are blessed with nails which grow fast as weeds and strong as steel. As for me it means washing dishes with gloves, taking supplements with biotin, filing with the most irritating fine sand paper. I look forward to trying your tip about singing while playing it makes sense but I don't know what to sing. If there were lyrics it would be easier for me. About making noise. In Spanish that faint noise made while learning to play is called "demando" . I'm guilty of this and shall be more conscious of it knowing it is counter productive. Once again thank you

satz112 Good question! My rule of thumb is practice the way you want to perform. If you find that the classical position is strenuous, I would adjust how you’re sitting. It should feel relatively relaxed, so play around with it until you feel really comfortable.
