The time factor is a prime reason why watercolor and colored pencils are so nice together. I can do washes to establish tone and value with watercolor then use pencils for details.

I've been working with coloured pencils for a while now, but every now and then I still watch videos aimed at beginners to see if I learn anything new. It turns out, I do sometimes and this was one. Great video ❤

These are EXTREMELY informative videos. I am just starting off with colored pencil and your channel is a most excellent resource.

This is a really great video, normally I don't find drawing tips very helpful but this was great! I was surprised to see so few views/comments! I'd love to see a video of a good example for beginners wanting to get into hyper-realism. Maybe similar to the pear but (if there is one you can think of) even easier so people can get a feel for whether this is the style for them.

I am only two videos into your channel and I have now subscribed to your patreon. I can't wait to see your videos. Actually only a few days ago, I was thinking of drawing a turtle under water, similar to what you showed in this video. I have oil painted on before and would love to do another but with pencil.

Thanks for this video Gemma. Very useful info very clearly taught. One question -do you print off your reference photo or copy straight from your PC/tablet? If you do print are you allowed to say which printer you use?
@GemmaChambersArt2 жыл бұрын
I love working from a tablet - being able to zoom right in to the section I'm working on is so helpful. I do have a Canon Pro 100S that I use for reproduction and selling prints, but I rarely print reference photos
@clairebarker-wyatt81272 жыл бұрын
@@GemmaChambersArt Thank you. You’re obviously beyond the need to ‘cheat’ by tracing the printout for the initial drawing! Zooming in on a tablet is a gift.

Many tips and great tips. Thanks for sharing. I have been trying to swatch all my pencils. I think I know the answer, but is it best to do the swatches on the paper I will be coloring on? I mostly love your last tips is giving yourself grace, and practice
@GemmaChambersArt Жыл бұрын
Yes, I always swatch on the same paper that I'll draw on 🙂

Thank you!! Very inspiring video 😊 Would just like to ask, is it okay if I do my swatches on an ordinary sketchbook or should it be in bristol/colored pencil paper?
@GemmaChambersArt2 жыл бұрын
In an ideal world, I'd always recommend using the same paper you're going to draw with. I know it feels like wasting a sheet of expensive paper, but it gives the most accurate colour match. Just keep it safe - I've been using the same swatch sheet for years!

If you are trying to do an original drawing realistically, how do you determine a consistent light source since you by necessity are using multiple reference sources, instead of just one reference photo.

I should stop going in straight away with hard presure using a darker color. So more layering and soft presure...

I had an art teacher who told me I drew too light. Then I began to press harder and harder. Now I have to try and un-learn that lol.
@rowena_nmart2 жыл бұрын
It can be true because I was also afraid to press it a bit harder and in the end, the drawing looked unfinished. But it is important to press only on the last few layers. 😊

This is a stupid question, but I'm never sure what artists mean when they say 'values'
@BrittanyArtPoetry Жыл бұрын
Values us the range of dark and light colors. So which areas have dark colors, which have light colors. Your darkest value might be black, or dark brown or dark purple for instance, whatever is darkest in your reference photo. Its the shadows. while the lightest might be white or light yellow or something else, again whatever is lightest in your drawing.
