when i was a teen twenty odd yrs ago i used to make my own sound effect recordings using a hi net md minidisc unit with a sony lapel mic. awesome sound fully portable. they are still raw and useable files. never knew there was a big term to describe it and people made little pits called foley boxes. strange.

Thank you. At what decibel level should the audio be recorded?
@TheFilmLook5 жыл бұрын
It really all depends on the environment and the source of the sound. I like to record things "warm", so it hits the mid-orange on a decibel metre, somewhere between -15 and -6. This gives you a nice clean loud recording with a little bit of room encase the sound raises all of a sudden.

Thank you so much for this very interesting video. May i ask which could be a decent portable recording device to start with some amateurial recordings of natural sounds ? Thanks a lot. Kind regards, gino
@TheFilmLook4 жыл бұрын
The zoom h1 is probably the most entry-level audio recorder I would recommend. I previously used it and thought it was stellar for the price. If you are looking to use XLR microphones, however, I previously owned the Tascam DR-40 and loved it! Another option would be looking into Zoom recorders, such as the H5n. They get a bit more pricey, but the build quality goes up a lot with these models.

Here you completely re recorded the audio as there was no dialogues.But what happens if there was dialogues? Then we have to use some sound created by the charecter while giving dialogues as both of them are baked together and are impossible to unbake.. I have watched another video of your channel where you were discussing how to reduce sound produced by the actors while giving dialogues like adding tape beneath the shoe and etc.But this trick will not work great here because the sound created by the charecters are very loud..So how to mix foley in this type of situation where actors are delivering dialogues and creating loud sound simultaneously?
@TheFilmLook3 жыл бұрын
If you are recording dialogue with a shotgun microphone, the dialogue will be a lot louder than any movement sound recorded. Obviously, with a scene being played out, there will be some bi-product foley recorded in the dialogue takes. This is actually great because it means when you DO record your foley, you have a sync point to add it back in. If we could have 10 invisible microphones all picking up every sound individually, this is how it would be done. Re-recording the foley is the next best way of doing this. On our most recent short Sixty Seconds, there was clothing movement within the dialogue takes. They were just very quiet. With some stand-alone clothing movement, we can decide how loud they should be. It's all about control.

@@TheFilmLook Thanks (again*2) for replying. I really appreciate it man. I get it. The foley recorded and mixed will always be louder and clearer than than the by product foley captured during the dialogue takes..

Great tips! :D I do have a question, though: what sort of microphone do you need to use for foley sound design? I get your mic looks like a shotgun type, but does it "have" to be a lobar polar pattern or will a supercardioid or hypercardioid one do? (bear in mind that I am thinking from a budget perspective. 😅)

How do you record foley directly on video? What software do you use?
@TheFilmLook4 жыл бұрын
For the majority of our foley recording, we actually capture it separately. So we will have a copy of the film playing on a laptop, and will simply hit record on the audio record and mimick the movement. For fine tuning the sync, we sometimes export a version of the film which has some beeps at the start, that we can capture them and sync it all up. Very similar to how a clapperboard works.
