How can you have only one bin for Christmas stuff? I have three bins plus boxes. I went through a box yesterday and through away an old Teddy Bear I had kept since my brother's passing. Hi Dawn, before you get rid of all the extra blankets, if you plan on camping often, you may want to consider having one for each of your children's bunks in the camper. When I was a child and we camped a lot, my mom had the camper fully stocked with items, whose home was the camper. It had its own linens, kitchenware and even our "camping clothes." I know that many would argue it goes against minimalism, but it does drastically minimze all the mental energy and time needed to get ready to go camping, especially with children. And you never forget anything, like warm coats :) When we got home, she would wash all the linens and clothing and put them immediately back into the camper. It took very little effort to prepare for a family adventure...we just needed to add food, hook up the camper, and off we went!
@kellykrueger96124 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience. We recently bought a trailer and I was having minimalism guilt at buying a 2nd set of stuff I already had in my house. I'm now starting to realize that I can't make "packing the camper" a huge task or I'll start resenting going out because it's too much work (especially if it's every other week!) And I don't have to worry about forgetting stuff! If we ever give up camping, I can just donate the camper set :)

I love the ‘set boundaries’ approach. And sometimes those boundaries change. At one time I had 1 bin for gardening supplies, and now I have 3. But it’s because seasons in our life change as do priorities! Back then I was storing lots of clothes for future babies, and now that we’ve got our 4 I’ve got more space (and time) to give to my gardening hobby. The boundaries are what save our sanity by not overfilling and cluttering our space. Love it!

My kids get very sentimental about their items too. They would often have givers/sellers remorse. I found a way that helps them through this is to tell them that we will not give/donate their stuff straight away. We will store it in a container for a little while (month or so). Then if they do have remorse about parting with one of their items they have the opportunity to buy/swap it back. I found that helped my kids a lot with giving away their stuff. I bought each of my adult children a nice giant duffle bag with wheels. I sorted and threw tons of stuff away, I took pictures and sent to my kids to ask them what they wanted. I also had 4 small totes with , special stuff in it. They can go through that later and then throw it away. I took a picture showing them where everything is. In the garage on shelves. I understand getting rid of home decor items that you just found in a store and bought. It's harder with sentimental items. I got rid of a stuffed T-rex from my childhood. Some memories are worth keeping.

You have to let go of the guilt of having discarded something. Ask yourself: if it was a stuffed toy, would it have reasonably been in good enough condition for your kids to play with after years, if not decades, spent in storing? Would they have even wanted to? There are always a lot of 'what if's when decluttering, but 99% of the time, it's better to just say goodbye.

I enjoy decorating for each season and making it different each year, but using the same things (although not necessarily using everything every year). I like the idea of gathering like items together. I recently did that with some of my decor that I rotate using throughout the year because the various pieces had been stashed in all sorts of places. It was indeed an eye opener, but also so helpful to have it all together when I redecorate and put things away. I loved your soothing and gentle tone of voice as you explain the thought process. My husband gets mad when I ask him to go through a box or drawer of his stuff, so I've decided to leave his stuff alone, and do everything else. There's tons of stuff to declutter that doesn't belong to him (and I can sneak a few of his things out the door that I know he won't miss). haha

I used to tote shuffle big time. Even as a teen I would empty my room of everything but the bed, sort, organise (a bit of declutter too) then put it back in a different way. I was always super pleased how I'd managed to condense everything down, packing it in a much more functional way. Now I'm adopting a more minimalist lifestyle I can see what a constant waste of time this was. I've got rid of stuff this year that I've been moving around since I was that teen! What a relief it has been to finally release that burden. I started looking at things thinking "if I'm not using it in lockdown then when is it going to happen?" There's still too much, it's a work on progress but I'm seeing it in a different way now!

Love this video! It’s not just tote shuffling, it’s closet shuffling, shelf shuffling, pantry shuffling or any other storage area in the house! We move things around to the point where they are packed in so efficiently and tightly! When we do pull them out it’s like pulling stuff out of a black hole. It’s amazing how much we pack into small spaces just to “hold on” to it.

I just cleaned off three shelves in the pantry today. I threw away a bunch of empties. Kids don't throw away the empties and it drives me nuts! The part that drives me the most crazy is my husband's wood working things and tool box.

This is by far the best and most comprehensive decluttering and minimalist KZbin channel I've ever watched. Dawn, your practical approach uses a minimum of words to get the point across. Speed up the videos to 1.25 to watch them more quickly. Learning so much. Serious ADD, so I really need a "color-by-number" mode to help me figure all of this out. This video was so good for me, because I have a Major in Tote Shuffling. That is one of my huge setbacks: shuffling over a period of more than 50 years has created a huge road block in my decluttering process. My take on decluttering was to rarely donate or throw anything away. And to shuffle, shuffle, shuffle...always. Used to live in much bigger homes, but since I'm a senior, don't regret downsizing at all. The total closet space I used to have in my homes were roughly the size of the entire apartment I live in now. Now that is such a vast difference in closet space. It has been difficult to get used to that in my present apartment. But I do not regret it at all. I "get" minimalism and am embracing it. Rather slowly, but I am learning so much from your videos. It's been a major awakening. Sometimes I watch 3 or 4 of your videos before I start a day of decluttering. I pick the titles that apply to what I want to do that day. I’m becoming braver in just throwing stuff away….that gave me such a sense of power….just tossing things out. Woo-hoo! That has literally saved my life. Since my apartment is 500 square feet, I do allow myself one storage unit that is 5 feet x 10 feet, which I use as a closet complete with one large double Z-rack for out of season clothing. Thank you so much for all you are doing to educate us and to set an example for people who need to see what you do for your own decluttering.

One thing I’ve started doing for holidays and seasonal decorating is using organic items that will then be able to be used up or composted like actual pumpkins instead of plastic, real fur boughs inside instead of the fake, it feels better for me to support friends and local businesses when we buy or pumpkins and trees to decorate and less stuff to put back in bins later!

I used to do this more, but I still move things to a “sell” pile and then never try to sell them. I’ve tried to learn and be more realistic on what has value and my time is worth $. So now I usually donate right away, but sometimes I still find myself doing this.

I have found myself in this same boat- half of my basement turned into boxes that said “lawn sale” on them, then I’d have a sale and maybe make $200.00.....not worth the time, effort and space! Also, seeing some of the things again would make me reconsider keeping it😳! I’m a donator now, only sell really big things on Facebook- and most times I give that away too!

About ten years ago, I inherited items that belonged to my mom and dad and both sets of grandparents. My dad was very sentimental so there was a lot of stuff. It was easy to get rid of the obvious trash, but then I got stuck. About five years ago, I used the KonMarie method to clear out clothes, books, paper, misc items; I got stuck on the sentimental items. By sentimental items I mean things like my childhood toys, and things that had belonged to other family members (whether they liked the items themselves or not when they had them I would never know!) I had an appraiser (who had no interest in buying any of my items so I thought she would be fair) come in after I had displayed all my items and she priced them all out for me. Most of the items were worth less that $25 which really shifted my perception of these items and I was able to donated the ones that I didn't enjoy. I knew I wouldn't take the time to sell items that I could maybe get $25 for!

Dawn, your videos/advice are very helpful and motivating. Someone else said they're more "real" than the "celebrity" minimalists or declutterers. I agree! One testimonial: I recently gathered all like items together with linens/bedding. I discovered we had 14 extra pillows that we weren't using! I didn't even realize it until I saw them all together piled on our guest bed. I asked our daughter-in-law if she needed any, and she was thrilled to get them because they enabled her to throw out hers that were less comfortable. The rest of the 14 are now donations or in the trash. This is a very effective technique that's working for me throughout the house. Thank you, Dawn!

What funny timing. My parents are building us a "tiny apartment" space in their basement. I'm decluttered to become more minimal so we can fit into that space. But my mom presented me with 4 tubs of sentimentals and my daughter's baby clothes since she's clearing space in her basement. I got rid of 3 tubs of stuff! Love your videos Dawn!

Hi Dawn, I have been watching your videos for a few months now after ‘accidentally’ clicking on you. And oh wow, am I glad I did. I thought I WAS minimalist - but I wasn’t - not as much as I wanted to be. I have listened to you and really taken on board the different tips and ‘questions to ask yourself’...and it works! I was keeping things, for example, as memories! Don’t need it all! I’ve made a ‘ memory box’ and those things that I really can’t part with are in there. The half full bottles of....stuff (shampoo, perfume, sunscreen etc etc) all gone! This is as a result of your tip on your bank account not decreasing by throwing stuff away, this was the biggest thing for me - genius. Also, the tip about having a rubbish bag and a box for donations - also genius. This morning I’ve cleared two cupboards, under my bed and my bathroom cupboard. They now store just what I use and the rest I was able to just take to the dump or the charity shop- no mess. Thank you so much. I’m away to do some more now 😘🏴

I've been using the term of "inventory" around my husband and it's starting to become his vocabulary too! He's in construction and had SO MANY coffee cans in the basement with random nails and screws. He spent a good amount of time on Saturday getting rid of them. He told me that he realized he wasn't going to send a can of random screws to a job site and he's not going to filter through them to find the right ones for the job. He's just going to end up buying a new box of screws. He said it felt so good to have that area cleaned out!

Dawn, I just love watching your vids... it's like sitting with my girlfriend and just talkin' 'bout stuff and things. You make the decluttering process seem doable and the tips and tricks you (and the whole fam) give us are real-life workable. Do I tote shuffle? Oh my goodness, YES!! Even, I must admit, pretty much as I type (craft room organization... it's a long and un-pretty story). My intentions are the best of course, but organizing the craft room means I first have to clear a couple shelves in the garage, so some of that stuff has to go to the shed... no, not that shed, THAT shed!! A day or two of this nonsense is enough to makes an old, tired, and sore lady feel even more old, tired, and sore... and discouraged! Lest I end on a downer I can truly say that because of you and Noreen at Call Cluttter Fairy I am learning to set realistic goals as I plan put my day or even my work as it relates to my end goal, so I thank you for that. Love the rose coloured cups ❤️, Another great video. I’m working on reducing Christmas Decorating Inventory too, which I find hard because the “Stuff” is so cute, and/or I received some as gifts and don’t want to hurt peoples feelings, etc, I have learned one thing though: If I give somebody something- no matter what it is - I always tell them Please do not feel you have to keep this you can return it you can give it away you can do whatever you wish. I usually try to include a gift receipt too. Of course, I only give things I think they WILL really want, can use, or love. (Lots of times now, it’s gift cards, food items, or experience adventure, eg. Movie tickets, home made gifts eg. mittens for grandkids. Sometimes, I’ll ask them ahead of time, before I buy it, what do you think of this as a gift idea? ) I love buying gifts but don’t want to contribute to cluttering up someone else’s home, ❤️

When my parents passed away we kept so much stuff, some useable some sentimental. When my in laws passed a few years later, the same happened. Does Tote Shuffling sound familiar? Why yes. Yes it does. I did not know there was a word for it. My hallway is still taken up by totes of outgrown or clothes that I or my kids aren’t wearing. But I’ve kept to sell or donate. Over a year and I have no hallway as they are still there and the mess has only grown around them with stuff that doesn’t fit in the totes. Downstairs same thing.... This summer I decluttered more clothing from my kids and they are in these boxes to donate. Can’t put them in garage as that is full of cardboard boxes I don’t have time or space to recycle, as well as other totes of various things, some to clean, some to donate, some to sell, some to keep, lots of baby stuff etc. Just today I thought, maybe I should donate ALL of it. I don’t want to have to literally throw it away which seems terrible. But am almost desperate enough to do so. Not sure if any donations places really need or want my stuff... according to some sources there is already way too much heading to donation centers. So that has stopped me just donating. And having time to make all these runs to donations. I certainly don’t have time to sell things but for things that are so expensive and still good condition it’s really hard. Thanks for the tips! 💕xo

As a nurse, I am concerned about your safety. Would the stuff slow you or your family down from being able to leave your house in a hurry in an emergency? And could the extra tons of card board boxes or other stuff at some point be a fire or trip hazard? I don't mean to be scaring people, there truly is safety and blessing in letting things go. And you will be setting a beautiful example for your children. You can set it on the curb with "Free" sign on it.

I've "been there, done that" with the shuffling for sure and have finally found the energy and willpower to put an end to it! There are some things I have intentionally allowed myself to put away for another day, but the difference now is that, rather than just sticking a box in the first open space I find, I have made sure all like items are together in clear bins, and since most of it at this point is sentimental, I've told myself they're there in the bins for when I have the capacity to make those decisions, but for now they have a home, and that brings order to my life. In the mean time I've been working on all other categories of my belongings, and it truly has been such a freeing process that I'm almost looking forward to going through that sentimental stuff! 😉

My husband is still struggling with getting rid of something he paid money for. We have 2 circular saws. EVERY TIME he goes to cut a piece of wood, he always goes to one saw. When I ask why he doesn't use the other one, he says, "Oh, it doesn't have enough power. It always gets hung up on the wood. This one's way better." Then I suggest getting rid of the 2nd one and he's like, "No way! I paid like 50 bucks for that!" Very frustrating. And we have the same discussion item after item. And I'm the one who ends up trying to find space for everything in the garage, our home office, kitchen, etc. He feels personally attacked and I think he also feels like I don't value the money that was spent. I really do! But I try to explain that I value our piece of mind and space to move and relax too! All the spaces I've simplified and keep neat make everyone feel relaxed and de-stressed. Keeping it doesn't recoup the money. He's come a loooong way in simplifying, but we are still working on communicating and compromising with this.

Just this past weekend I had help, & they insisted on using the good saw... which got the job completed before the tropical storm blew in.

"trying to find a space for everything" - that's the phrase that gets me. Why is it that the one who insists on keeping something can't be bothered with finding an appropriate place to keep it? - OR take care of it? (dust, clean, etc.) Why is that the wife's job?

@@sunshine3914 You are SO right! He did grow up in a home that was NOT simplified, if you know what I mean!! And even though we've been married for 25 years, I know habits are very hard to adjust. I hear him tell his brother how organized our home is and how his bro should let me help them simplify, too. I'm so touched that he's acknowledging my efforts and how it's benefitted our family in such a positive way. But HAHA it's still so hard for him to part with things! And I want him to see it as a positive thing. Baby steps!

@@bobbidunn8512 Right? It's tough! He grew up in a really bad hoarding home. To this day, even after all the simplifying we've done together it's hard to watch him try to clean his office or the garage on his own. He just kind of puts things in piles and gets distracted by every item he touches. He gets so overwhelmed. He was never taught HOW to declutter or organize or let things go. They had very little of value, and he works tirelessly to provide for us, so anything we buy he feels the need to hold on to. I see where he's coming from and he's slowly learning to see where I'm coming from too. Our home has always been pretty clean, but now it's becoming more peaceful and open as I simplify more every day. He really enjoys that and I'm just waiting with the best patience I can for him to keep coming around. I knew what I married into, so we'll forge ahead together!

My husband does the same thing, but he gave his younger adult brother his old tools. It seemed to help knowing the person he was giving it to.

>Yes! I’ve been finding myself saying...do I want to manage this? >Also...love that you said we are ***alike*** and many of us do the tote shuffle. >Id love to see a video on totes from childhood. The bin that your parents donate. Sentimental stuff: Yearbooks, artwork, baby book & blanket, keepsake notes and photos.

Dawn, great way to present this. Can I live without this really resonates with me today.

They actually remind me of Halloween rather then Christmas votives. 🤪😁

I was thinking they looked like fall pieces and could even be painted.

Our dumpster is arriving on Friday and I am so ready to clean out the garage and our house. I love the set boundary approach. We have way too many pillows that we bought to find the "right" pillow. Even though we spent good money on all of them, I am tossing them. How many can we really use. I came to realize this as you were talking about the blankets. Out goes many of the Christmas decorations too. Single candles in the window, runners on the tables, and tabletop tree with simple lights are enough. The kids are grown and on their own, time to declutter! We moved from a ten bedroom farmhouse with barn, tack room, and acreage to a 1,500 square foot house now that we are retired. My sons told me to "go away" as they tossed out things from the farm house and I honestly can say I don't really know what filled the dumpster to the brim but don't miss anything.
