I definitely agree that you don’t want any of the Big (Huge, Enormous, Mind-Bogglingly Vast) Bads turning up in every campaign … but one thing I’ve found useful to create is an arch-villain. This would still be a human (or perhaps a little bit more than human: a cult leader or a powerful sorcerer): someone who can be defeated but who can - a few adventures later - return from the shadows to challenge the players again. I had a lot of fun with Baron Hauptmann, who variously appeared as: Baron Hauptmann; then Baron Hauptmann’s revenant; then some poor innocent who got possessed by the spirit of Baron Hauptmann, when they bought his enchanted signet ring from a curio shop; then the “miraculously cured” ex-catatonic asylum patient who got taken over by the disembodied spirit of the Baron after the players finally managed to smash the enchanted signet ring … It really helps crank up the paranoia when players start wondering if and when their nemesis is going to reappear.

Nice video. The most important bit of advice to new GM's in Call of Cthulhu (CoC), is have extra clues ready for when the PC's go off the rails. CoC is a game where you solve mysteries. You will be giving clues to your players, and they need to decide what to do. But they will miss or forget clues. Example: You have 4 players, most of which have about a 50% Spot Hidden talent. You tell them to make a Spot Hidden roll to learn some important clue. There is a 1/16 chance of all of them blowing it right? Sooner or later, EVERYONE will blow that roll. What do you do now? I've learned two major techniques: One) prepare a few extra clues that you can drop in to get people back on track. Two) if it is vital to have them gain a clue, don't make them roll to get it. Give it to them, and maybe have them roll to gain _extra_ information. Insane Insight is your friend, don't forget about it when things are getting grim. Also, remember that if they get stuck, an IDEA roll will always get them back on track. (It may come with a cost, but they will always get an important clue.) Warm regards, Rick.

Another piece of advice I've heard is...make the clues OBVIOUS as you don't want riddles within riddles within riddles...maybe at 1 level complexity at most

I had bought the CoC Starter Set a few ears ago with no real plan to run any of the scenarios and I managed to run three of them so far and I've never really tried to run a one shot before. I also managed to run a D&D one shot recently that went rather well. Now I want to run one of the proper CoC campaigns sometime for my current D&D group. Just need to get through the two games we're currently playing though.

Just bought the starter set. I have a group of 4 (mildly interested) players and am wondering if Dead Man Stomp, Edge of Darkness, and Paper Chase are good. I am completely open to making something on my own but want to try a prewritten module to test the waters for me and my players.

I’m starting a campaign where they’re playing a small local gang, so yes you can take time off to gain sanity, health, and luck back but during that down time (about a week) the other gangs see you guys not doing much so you can give up one of the blocks or not take another week off. And their is an unknown amount of down time between jobs and attempted gang expansion. If you don’t expand you loose “respect” which makes it easier to broker deals and get away with criminal activity because people got fuzzy memory.

If players can't deal with hard subjects or horror then they shouldn't be playing a horror game. It comes down to maturity.

ironic that you say "or even Cthulhu himself" because Cthulhu is one of the lowest ranking outergods
