There’s so much to take in and it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the path that lies ahead of you. That’s why in this video I thought I’d share the top 5 things that I learned in the last 2 year, working in live pro audio.

I guess my biggest thing I've learned in only a few years of sound, is realising who you are mixing for. It's not the public! As long as you are close to what they expect, you're fine. As they drink more alcohol, any shortfalls gat overlooked. You are mixing for the artist/s! If you can deliver a great on-stage mix, they will play more confidently, making it easier to get a great performance from them. You just have to make that a bit louder, but the crowd with connect with a great vibe on stage more than great Eq etc from FoH! This applies more to smaller gigs, rather than festivals or big shows, where you need to be the monitor engineer to have that perspective.

Yeah I'd agree, we are often very critical of our own mixes, but as long as there's not screaming feedback and you can hear the vocal, the general public are very forgiving.

For me, the tip number 1 is...be nice and punctual! The second tip is..develop people skills. You will always work with people. This job is 50% People skills and 50% technical.
