Here's one I heard... this British Rail 10800 trundled onto the path of some KZbinr historian of minor fame, and then called all his mates to gang up on the poor fellow... was about two years ago, from what I recall, and last I heard, he's still talking about it to this very day. Drove the poor fellow absolutely mental.

I'd actually like to hear more on the Netherlands NS-200, the little shunters you hang off the side of to drive em. Somewhere in that admittedly all-too-entertaining series they got a brief mention... now I'm curious to know more! (Silly me.)

That third train that stole a cleaning lady is a brilliant example of how relying on safety "procedures" that are trivial to circumvent for convenience is a recipe for disaster.

21:30 On the buses I drive, if you leave it in drive while the doors are open, even if the parking brake is released, it won't go anywhere. If the doors are closed while the bus is in drive, it'll lock the transmission until the brake is pressed. A lot of bus drivers leave the bus in drive to save time. I personally don't like only having one thing prevent the bus from moving, mainly because of this crash.
@JBobjork

Yes, I am a bus driver too and sometimes the door brakes does not work. On some models you then have to apply the parking brake to open the doors, but on some you realize it doesn't work when the bus starts rolling as you load passengers.

Nice PSA at the end there, Darkness. Remember kids, Trains win against Cars, Trucks, Planes, Helicopters, Buildings and Boats. Do not take any of these into direct collision with a Train, as you will LOSE. Moose win against Trains. It may be a pyrrhic vicory, but they still win. Do not enter into conflict with a Moose, as, unless you are stronger than a Train carrying several thousand tons of Iron ore, YOU WILL LOSE.

For those that think a moose is not destructive. I was in Maine were there are some Moose. It was rutting aka mating season for moose and other deer. Well several OTR drivers had gone to sleep in a rest area in northern Maine. We woke up the next morning and one of us had a moose scratching his head on the hood ornament of his long nose Peterbilt truck. He goes I'll get rid of him and blew his air horn at the moose. What he did not see but several of us behind him did see was the second BULL moose looking at his reflection in his polished doors of his reefer trailer. The front moose said oh no you don't challenge me and charged the truck hit it hard and shook it. Then the second one saw his reflection move towards him. For the next 20 mins those 2 meese tore that truck apart.

One very weird train disaster that once happened was when an ICE train (probably an ICE 2 or 1) collided with a herd of sheep as it entered the Landrücken Tunnel. The ICE number 885 was damaged quite heavily, as it was traveling at 210+ km/h when it hit the sheep. 12 out of 14 of the cars derailed. Out of the 170 people on board, 22 were seriously injured and 17 only slightly. injured. Some sources state that up to 77 sheep died. The cost came out to 10,320,000 Euro.

The North American moose often comes up among the top three most dangerous animals in North America, where they weigh over 1500 lbs, stand over 6 ft at the shoulder, and have a temper only fractionally better than a hippopotamus. Plus, unlike almost every other member of the deer family a moose can kick in any direction. I can see how one could derail a freight train if a moose can walk away uninjured from totaling a Honda.

Moose. There is a home security video of a moose minding its own business walking along a forest edge. But, its a certain time of year. Moose antoers are not permanent. The moose sneezes, its antlers fall off, the moose utters whatever "WTF" is in moose, and runs from its own antlers. And somebody got a nice trophy for the wall without having to hunt.

moose vs car.. At night, you may only see "legs" on each side of the road. The moose is tall enough you may not see the body in the middle unless you have high beams on. Hitting the moose with an average car just makes the moose ANGRY.... If it isn't too tall, you end up with a collapsed roof with a moose lying on it trying to figure out who to kill to get even....

A moose crossed the road in front of me when driving trough Norway, and yes, they are HUGE! There is also the story of a train in England taking out a German FW-190 after it strafed the steam engine with cannon fire. It caused the boiler to explode and the dome flying off took out the plane. The young pilot had underestimated the power of a boiler explosion and thought he was safe at 300ft. The locomotive, Southern Railway class D3 2365 was even repaired and taken back in service.

Another thing about the train crashing into a house The reason so many articles mentioned the train being stolen wasn't because they didn't have all the facts, it was Arrivaz and later the Public Transport Authority telling them she stole it, and the päolice also investigating it, that made the news go nuts. The fact that they later took it back didn't sell any more newspapers so not many did any follow up articles except the ones that now could write articles about the region of Stockholm blaming a victim.

I’m curious as to how the cars rolled away and were able to gain enough speed to pierce the hull, as ideally the emergency brakes would automatically apply once there was a separation in the brake pipe. Even if not enough to stop the cars, but perhaps just enough to slow it down enough. Unless maybe the engine was doing switch service or an industry job, then maybe they were just pulling cars with brakes which were bled off, to make switching a little faster.

On the topic of train derailing after hitting an animal, on the 28th of April 2008 and ICE hit a flock of sheep, derailing, and sliding derailed into a tunnel, some of the cars would have tilted over if not for the tunnel wall. And if you now take a second to think what would have been if the flock of sheep would have been hit a bit earlier and the train would have tilted enough before entering the tunnel and instead slamming into the portal of the tunnel..... yeah.....

FYI, a much more widespread and more sensible safety system than PTC (that is, if you have a dense network and don't try to do this the cheapest way possible) is PZB, which has been in use since the 1950s. Magnets are placed at corresponding signals, switches and speed restrictions, and if a train passes at a too high speed, it will be stopped automatically. As it's incredibly reliable, simple in its implementation and relatively inexpensive, variants of this system have been in use on almost the entire European rail network since at least the late 70s. As for why PZB wasn't present for the accidents in Rotterdam and Stockholm, I'd hazard a guess and say that those systems don't run under heavy rail regulations (certainly the RET doesn't), and thus have far fewer safety restrictions.

Darkness - The thing that makes the Moose so dangerous is that they are completely unpredictable. Since they are so large, there is no single predator that can take one down. So, if you're not a Wolf Pack, it doesn't know what to do. It may ignore the threat, and just keep ambling along, it may run, it may stand still and let you touch it, it may charge, and it may tap-dance on top of you or your vehicle until the annoying noise stops. Of course, in the Mating Season, all bets are off. There's a school of thought that a Locomotive or Truck horn is similar enough to a Mating Dominance Challenge that the honked-at Moose is compelled to charge it to defeat it in head-to-head, antler-to-antler battle. Then there are the Brain Parasites.

In the helicopter v. train saga, if the train was electric powered EMU, how did the helicopter avoid the electric power supply? If it came straight down, it would have struck the overhead catenary, or if it was a third rail, they must have been really lucky not to foul it with the skids. It would have been a very sad ending if after making a successful forced landing, the crew got fried by several thousand volts of electricity.

Speaking of Milwaukee, it was the location of an incident involving rail rolling stock and a ship. In 1905, Milwaukee Electric interurban car #1011 was crossing the Water Street bridge. As the car was about to clear the span, the lake freighter Kearsarge struck the moveable bridge before it could be opened. No serious injuries to the people on the interurban car and the ship did not suffer any serious damage. The bridge was wrecked and the interurban car, suspended above the wreckage, was said to be close to plunging into the water. Car #1011 was repaired and remained in passenger service until 1923, when it was demotorized and rebuilt into an express trailer, finally being scrapped in 1941.

No, we don't call it Elk in Scandinavia, that's a misconception. In the 90s someone thought that the elk and moose(in swedish, älg) was the same animal and that's the name came to stupid people that can't see the difference between a worm and a tiger. The Swedish name on a moose is Älg, so it's easy for stupid people to think that "ooh, so in English the name for älg(pronounce [elj]is elk."😂😂😂 for us, the real Elk is called "Wapiti hjort" or "Wapiti deer"

To speak Dutch just get really drunk and try to say it in English. I'm not a big art guy but I like those statues, interesting without being weird, and built Tonka tough.

Oh yeesh, Arriva. Nice to know they are just as awful in the Nordic nations. Also what the actual fuck at the Arctic Star being sunk by a few train cars. Just....what, how does a train car even do that much damage collectively to the boat?

why did the rear of train that broke away RUN AWAY DOWN HILL, if the rolling stock was fitted with automatic air brakes, the brakes would have applied in emergency, or was the equipment have badly maintained brake system, that seems to be a normal thing with American railroads equipment
