Landlines sometimes crossed. When I was in college happened to me three times in one night and always with the same number or line. On the third time, the guy who answered the calls was already annoyed and ask me what was happening. I explained that apparently our lines were crossed because I dialed a friend’s number, but it was his number that was ringing. The guy calmed down, we continued talking for about an hour that night and many nights afterward. Next month, we will celebrate our 27 wedding anniversary. 🤷🏽‍♀️

These stories are so creepy! Getting strange calls from people you don't know is scary enough, but when they start showing up places uninvited it becomes really unsettling and dangerous. I'll be extra cautious about answering calls from numbers I don't recognize after hearing these. Short, mysterious calls late at night from heavy breathers are the worst. Glad the police were able to help in some cases. Stay safe out there everyone!

Ah yes, the old days of not knowing who was calling, and creepy people making weird calls. Almost seems innocent compared to what they do on the internet now. Also when a ringing phone was IRRESISTIBLE and everyone came running😂

Man, time flies. I remember when story 1 was true. Landlines, rather basic cellphones, answering machines, not every phone had caller ID.
@thelastmotel
@thelastmotel 11 ай бұрын
Story 1 was never true, as it is set when internet-capable camera cellphones already existed. People seem to misremember when technologies first appeared. We've had social media for 27 years already, and camera phones turned 23 this year, and text messages (aka SMS) turned 31 this year. Caller ID was invented in 1968, and went mass market for businesses in 1988, and for home users in 1989.
@henrys3138

@@thelastmotel I assume most of these stories aren't true where the plot is, but you're objectively wrong about time when you consider emergence and availability or ubiquity aren't directly related or happen concurrently. LEDs are from the 60s, but you're only seeing their widescale use since the late 00s, and throughout the 10s. Technology takes time for refinement, to lower its cost, and consideration of its applications. This time may vary between products, but the fact remains the same that simply existing isn't enough to convey the realities of a moment in time. In 2001 I had a rotary phone, one other landline with caller ID and answering machine, a CRT TV, no cell phones, a Sega Genesis, and slow Internet on a tower PC with CRT monitor. The cell phones anyone else in my family had had antennae and no cameras.

@@thelastmotel, still I didn't have caller ID until the mid 1990s. I still had my old rotary dial phone until late 80s and switched to a push button style that look like the rotary dial phone. Only in the mid 90s did I get caller ID or an answering machine.

Makes me think about a family member getting a strange phone call from a woman hysterically crying on the other end. Apparently this is some sort of scam and nothing came of it, but I couldn't imagine answering that call myself. Creepy. Great stuff as always!

OMG…when I moved to the country, my dad received THAT kind of call one night. Mum rang me early the next morning to ask if I was okay? Everything was great and then mum told me a woman crying and blubbering to my dad, but he couldn’t understand anything and thought it was me in distress! He tried to call me back that night, but we were sleeping and no one heard the phone! They were so relieved to know it wasn’t me…but we always wondered if it was someone in real distress out there somewhere!?! 🫤

You aren't mistaken. Mobile phones have been around a long time. Since 1973, in fact. Text messaging was added to them in 1992, which was the same year the first touch screen phone was released. Prepaid phones came around about 1991. Camera phones have been around since 2000, and smart phones and internet capable phones have been around since 1994. For some reason, a lot of people have this kind of mental block which prevents them from remembering how long we've had the things lol. Hell, people forget that social media has been around for about 27 years already.

Most landlines back then it was just an option. You had to pay extra. And if your parents were penny pinchers it was likely they didn't bother. My dad worked for the phone co so our land lines were free back then and he never paid extra for the caller ID, three way calling, or things like that. So it's possible OP had a similar situation.

When I was a toddler in the early 90s, answering machines were still a thing. My parents thought it would be cute to have me record our family’s message. It was fine until they received a voicemail from some man saying “awww. What a sweet little girl. Too bad you won’t have her much longer.” Then he laughed an evil laugh and hung up. Probably just a prank call, but after that, my parents only had my Dad make our answering machine message.
