Different cultures have different values and saving face is very important in this situation. I doubt it occurred to them that they were neglecting their daughter.

I was just pointing out that in some societies, their cruelty is more the normal reaction to embarrassment than in a country like the USA where they would be prosecuted for neglect and abuse. I was married to a man whose father did something similar to his sister and refused to buy formula and diapers for the baby because it was not his bas#ard to raise. My husband quit school and went to work to buy what the baby needed and eventually his father threatened him at gunpoint to leave. He was living under an overpass on interstate when I met him, but he continued to give his sister support. This was in 1976.

Haven't seen them all but that 1st story certainly wasn't "creepy " or scary in any way, I thought it was lovely, especially if it really was her g/mother who somehow made the call for her g/daughter and great g/daughter.
