With no programming skills whatsoever, prototyping on RPG Maker is the only way I can get my project off the ground. My tactical RPG is very ambitious and I need *some* way to get it out of my head and test all those ideas against reality. Also, being able to show the concept in action may get me some help to push the project further.

I like RPG Maker as a way to create art for lack of a better way to put it. I am a reasonably capable coder and sometimes do other things in other engines, but when I just want to relax I put on some lofi and I do parallax mapping, or write a little adventure and place it in a town I build up from RTP tiles. It is a bit like an adult coloring book. Some of those little sessions have become game jam games and in two cases fairly complex projects. I thin RPG Maker is unique in how pleasant it is to just play around with.

I agree that this is a great way to get into game development. I tried godot (another great option), gdevelop, unity, and unreal. Those engine took too much time to get anything done and i hit constant roadblocks with those. I use rpg maker mv and I love it. I've made a small project in just 2 weeks that was around 2 hours long. Granted i put some time into that (around 50 hours of work for 2 hours of gameplay)but it was so worth it and so satisfying. Not to mention the HUGE community around rpg maker. There are a ton of tutorials, forums, and plugins that are free to use to really make your project stand out.

I remember thinking rpg maker games aren't good, or maybe are good but don't look pleasing and battles seem uhh, and also text boxes, and thought if u wanted to make a good rpg just use gamemaker (which is now free, I'm using it now) like undertale and deltarune, but the game Omori really showed me I was wrong (and I think the usual visual in rpg maker games was the actual problem) Edit: All the games shown here in the video have the usual problem I'm talking about even tho they don't have the same artstyle, idk what it is
@claude-alexandretrudeau1830 Жыл бұрын
The prototyping capacity of RPG Maker can be quite surprising. With the built-in ability to input code in more recent versions, you can break the mold and do anything. I'm making a tactical RPG in RPG Maker because I want exploration phases occuring in the same maps as combat. Other makers seldom have that flexibility.

I made it so that projectiles can meet unexpected obstacles in their trajectories. This will allow monks and ninjas to catch arrows that fly by them, even if they are not the intended target. It will also allow the warriors to stand in the way of enemy fire with their armor and shield to protect the party. Once you can intercept projectiles, you can make is so that moving about in formation becomes critical for survival. And I want to create a game that reflects that.

Which version of RPG maker are you using? I have interest in also making an RPG with tactical turn-based combat on the overworld. I wasn't certain if I'd have to use Godot or perhaps one of the versions of RPG maker is flexible enough for it.

Learning the ropes was a journey of a couple years. I'm using RPG Maker MV. It has all the scripting capabilities I need, plus it has a pathfinding function that you can use. I don't feel the need for anything fancier. I got my copy at a discount for 20$. MZ never drops this low and basically does the same thing. VX Ace uses another scripting language, but has similar capabilities. In the learning phase, it's better to go as minimalist as possible, especially if you want to actually own your work and not owe it to the author of a plugin.

I bought RPG Maker first to make a prototype, but my idea is to make an isometric game similar to how some RPG scenarios used to be made in AOE2 back in the day. I used to be a modder of that game back in the day, always present on AOK Heaven, before even AOE2: HD came out, and the fact everything is HD and super nice made my AOE2 style pixel- drawing skills obsolete lol. I wonder if I can make combat in RPG Maker MZ more "real time", not as in action-based games, but kinda like how AOE2 does, which is simply an auto-attack animation when two collision boxes touch each other, not something high-octane or anything. If I remember, although I did very little "modding" in that game, Mugen, that 2d fighting engine which is the basis of Touhou: Hisoutensoku, worked with touching collision boxes too. I'm fine with turn-base as well though, it's just that I'm more "accustomed" with RTS style of combat in RPG-like scenarios like micro-ing, kiting, throwing your beefiest "tank" characters onto the path of an incoming enemy, while you bombard them with ranged units, taking terrain elevation in consideration to gain buffs, etc... TBH, I don't plan to move to other engines or create my own if RPG Maker provides everything I need to create my idea, which isn't much. The only really essential stuff I need is a nice "trigger system", A GUI that can handle lots of info if I for example want to introduce crafting, farming or other sorts of minigames and handle Isometric "2.5d". Also, Big maps, although I don't mind if they are presented in smaller chunks, but I wish to make a map as big as some AOE2 maps where the largest was 512x512 tiles with hundreds of units moving around and dozens of animals and all sorts of buildings triggering things, etc...

@@claude-alexandretrudeau1830 I mean I want battles to not exist at all. I guess think of "To The Moon" kind of gameplay in a sense.
@claude-alexandretrudeau1830 Жыл бұрын
The neat thing is that if you don't want battles to exist, you just don't make them. Concentrate on the options you really need. Like textboxes and events. With the basic assets, you can prototype your scenes and write anything you want into textboxes. Soon, you will need switches. Whenever you want to ask your game a yes/no question, the answer is switches. Did you pick [x] item? That's a switch. Did you talk to [x] character? That's another switch. Then, you'll want the game to count things. For example, dating sims determine the amounts of care a particular girl has for you with a particular number, which can increase or decrease depending on choices and events. That number is a variable. If you want your project to be a game and not just a novel, you'll want to translate interactive concepts into numbers, which are stored as variables. There is no tutorial per se for what you want to do. Start with the beginning. Experiment with the tools at your disposal. Soon, you'll be able to identify your needs and ask precise questions in forums or look up these answers. RPG Maker makes eventing and mapping really simple. Start with these. Then, you can add some mechanics behind with textboxes, switches and variables.

Yes thats possible but in doing so you'll need a to have a backbone of rpgmaker itself and familiries with the basic and when you have same knowledge background i will have to advice you to learn the game engine documentation itself and this process will be difficult espiecially you have no experience in javascript which is the scripting language for rpgmaker this way youll then make a plugin to set youre own custom mechanics that fits youre preference
