I don't know if they're underrated, but albums from 1970 that should be better known include "Sunflower" by the Beach Boys, "Sit Down Young Stranger" by Gordon Lightfoot, and "Magnetic South" and "Loose Salute" by Michael Nesmith and the First National Band. "Sunflower" is an especially good album, with contributions from all band members. It didn't sell well, and none of the singles became big hits, because it happened to come out at a time when the Beach Boys' popularity in North America was at a low point. While "Pet Sounds" was a good-sounding mono album, "Sunflower" sounds great in stereo. "Sit Down Young Stranger" includes the hits "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Me and Bobby McGee" and outstanding non-single tracks such as "Approaching Lavender" and "Saturday Clothes." "Magnetic South" is the better of the two Nesmith albums, but they're both good. The whole first side of "Magnetic South" is great, especially "Joanne," while side 2 concludes with a lengthy version of "Beyond the Blue Horizon," which Lou Christie copied for his 1974 cover. "Loose Salute" includes "Silver Moon" and its B-side, "Lady of the Valley," and non-single tracks such as "Thanx for the Ride" and "Conversations" (the latter is another version of "Carlisle Wheeling").

Quite right about workingman’s dead. I tend to forget about it because the only dead album I have is American beauty, which is gorgeous, with no electric guitar and wonderful vocal harmonies.

Immediate discredit calling those two Grateful Deads with any level of 'underrated' labels. You judge yourself. Delaney & Bonnie - you score a plus on that one, and especially when you consider the supporting cast of musicians - except for woman-beater and murderer Jim Gordon.

Because, simply stated it's the Music Industry Weasels Hall of Fame. Nothing to do with rock, although it started out pretty good. The RRHOF got off track when Jann Wenner and his little circle of friends took over and summarily dismissed a lot of classic rock artist and bands, and instead opted for inducting posers that spread the demographics younger, or totally non-rock Hip hop and pop artists as favors for old grease bag music promoters and whats left of the record industry. Pay-offs, you betcha, yet every East Coast pop-folkie and a lot of half ass 80's bands have made the cut when real artists that moved the needle such as Delaney and Bonnie, Warren Zevon, Arthur Lee, Mitch Ryder, etc. will never been inducted.

Delaney and Bonnie were a flash in the pan band that Eric Clapton played with, certainly not Hall of Famers, but no one who saw the great bands of the early 70s gives a rat's ass about the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame anyway.

"Workingman's Dead", a masterpiece. It came out of nowhere and think it made the executives at Warner Brothers very happy. I was a full-blown nut-job at that period of time and saw them repeatedly at the Fillmore East. I could see first-hand the subtle shift as they were forming their identity and becoming slightly less "experimental" and a much better band. Do yourself a favor and get the default named "Skull and Roses" live LP from 1971. The LP has only grown on me over the years. The finale of "Not Fade Away" morphing into "Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad" is the Grateful Dead at their very best, jamming concisely and effortlessly.

I want to nominate 'Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus' by Spirit. Not much of an impact when it came out, picked up a bit of momentum over the years, and (for whatever reason) did sorta well in Canada. My first copy was on 8-track so, yup, been listening to it for a while.

Love Wishbone. For me, one of the most underrated albums of all-time is The Beach Boys' SUNFLOWER. How this wasn't a hit was only because the boys were out of favor. But the songs, arrangements, engineering, and performances are absolutely brilliant. Best album by them after PET SOUNDS. Dennis Wilson turns into a fabulous songwriter.

Hey, interesting booster for Syl Johnson. I'm one of those people who got mega-doses of all things Grateful Dead, 'cause I lived near San Francisco. Not everybody can be so lucky. The radio there played Workingman's Dead more than American Beauty. Here's three underrated 1970 records I must have (could probably find two more of I tried): The Flamin' Groovies -- Flamingo Hot Tuna -- Hot Tuna J. Geils Band -- J. Geils Band All great stuff. "Have you heard the news, there's good rocking' tonight! "

You could always wander through KZbin search if you want to sample Hot Tuna live -- there's a lot of it, and it varies depending on who is in the band (if anyone) besides the core, Jorma and Jack. Their first record, which I listed, is one of their best, with just acoustic guitar, bass, harmonica and voice -- largely blues standards, recorded live. Their third album, Burgers (1972) is their other best, with Papa John Creech on fiddle and Sammy Piazza on drums. Those two records are the ones to look for, although the rest have their points of interest and advocates. I last saw them as a duo in 2012 and they were still kicking' it.
@simonagree4070
@simonagree4070 3 ай бұрын
I listed the J. Geils debut because it always gets left in the shade of their Full House live album and their later hits ( "Love Stinks"). It's a swinging collection of originals and covers in the soul and blues areas -- very sharp and to the point.
