So happy to see someone give recognition to The Hunger! It's unfortunately very underrated, even within the horror genre.

T. R. Ferenbach's "Comanches: The History of a People". A biographical I absolutely could not put down.

Empire of the Summer Moon was awesome. I had my son read it and he agreed. Speaking of sons and Comanches, The Son is great and about a white guy taken into the Comanches. Then there’s Comanche Moon. Those Comanches sure knew how to torture people. Brutal. And if you’re mentioning McCarthy, then Blood Meridian. Brian Lee Durfee’s review was the best “Holy shit. My God.” That pretty much sums it up. And for some weird western vibes try Richard Brautigan’s The Hawkline Monster.

Oooh, adding ALL of these to my TBR! Very unique choices on here. How Much of These Hills is Gold particularly caught my interest.

I don't have an extensive western experience, but I have read the all the pretty horses and the crossing by Cormac McCarthy, and they are both brilliant. The Road by Cormac is also amazing. Not western tho. Lownsome Dove was really good as well

I was ready to tell you that I had never really even thought of Western as a genre, I was adding the first four to my TBR list, and I think I'll pick up one of the Zahler books as soon as I can find one, and then you got to number 1! A book I've actually read! I really enjoyed The Hunger! I never really considered it as a western but of course it is! Super excited to check out one of the other books now!

Some recs I think you might dig: 1. "Butcher's Crossing" by John Williams. (old-school Western) 2. "Whiskey When We're Dry" by John Larison. (new-school Western) 3. "All Things Left Wild" by James Wade. (RDR-ish Western) Hopefully you'll enjoy those three, and my suggestions weren't all hat.

DESTIMGATIZE THE WESTERN GENRE! That's what's up! I'm interested in a lot of these. Thank you for these recs! The Crossing is also my favorite from The Border Triology. If you like Gwynne's style of history book, I recently read Hymns of the Republic, and I recommend it. It's about the last years of the American Civil War, and it was one of my favorite books covering the topic.

I might do that, not a huge nonfiction guy but I thought that book was great.
