Great vid as usual Matt. One thing I would add is whilst there is no specific rule against these the DRA can act under rule 16.3. 'Matters not otherwise provided for'. When I studied law at uni we used to cause them 'dustbin clauses'! You say you can't do a, b or c and then in case you've missed anything 'or anything else if we see fit'! I hate dustbin clauses. It's lazy drafting and leads to uncertainty.

I've never had this. Won a lot of games (at amateur level of course), lost some. Never has there been a drink being bought by one of us. I mean, it's sports, we play to play, we play to win, but we don't play to have a drink. If we do have a drink, we have it because we want a drink while playing, but not because we're playing. And you buy your own drink, you don't want anyone else to do that. Also, it would make it very expensive to pay a drink to a winning player everytime you lose if you are a bad player in the first place. Nobody would want to play darts again, because they're afraid to lose a lot of games, being expected to buy a lot of drinks every week. Never heard of a football team having to buy drinks to their opponents after they lost the game against them. Would be pretty bad for a struggling team at the bottom of the table. Not only facing relegation but also losing money for having to buy drinks all the time... Really don't like that unwritten rule. If you lose, you lose. That's bad enough. Don't let people make you waste money after you lost, you've lost a game, that's enough! By the way, it took a very long time until I finally started to play darts myself, even though I wanted it for a long time. There were many reasons, but (a minor) one of them being that I don't have all that much money and I honestly thought I'd have to pay too many drinks to my opponents, even though I couldn't afford them. Well, as it turns out I win most of my amateur games, but still, I don't want to know how many good shy players don't play darts because of that very reason.

According to rule 5.4.1: A dart shall only score if the point of the dart remains in or touches the face of the dartboard within the outer double wire and, having been “called”, is retrieved from the face of the dartboard by the Player throwing that dart. In a dart league I run, one of the strongest players also happens to be one of the slowest when it comes to maths. When on a three dart out, he generally knows where to start, but if the first dart goes astray, he sometimes struggles to figure out his next move. His wife is usually watching and will often call out his next shot. Some players have a problem with this and have complained to me saying, "It must be against the rules". However, as far as I am aware, there's no rule to stop her doing this. (Unless of course, she happened to be chalking, but that's a different matter.) I see this as being similar to a player stopping to consult an out chart. I'm not a fan of out charts, but some people need them and I'd rather they find an answer quickly than make me wait while they struggle to figure it out. Heck, I'd even tell him what I'd throw at in his situation if he asked me. We're all friends in the league, and friends help friends, right? So, as far as I'm concerned, it's a darts competition not a maths competition, so I don't have a problem with him getting help when he needs it. What do you think?

@@anntifurz While I agree that strong numeracy skills are a definite advantage when playing darts, the fact remains that some people simply cannot do the maths fast enough, no matter how hard they try. Sometimes there can be an underlying reason, sometimes it's just because everyone is different. Whatever the cause, I would never discourage anyone from playing darts simply because they can't count. So, the situation I described in my post remains. Personally, while I have strong number skills, I struggled and failed to learn a foreign language when I lived in Holland for five years. I never managed anything beyond very basic communication, so I can empathize with anyone struggling with numeracy or literacy.

Hi. I got 2 questions. What if the marker is terrible at math ? Should you stand there waiting for him to get it right before you retrieve your darts? Hell of a long match 🤣🤣🤣 and the second question.. is it a written or unwritten rule that after retrieving your darts you go to the right instead of the left side ?
@das_bouk Жыл бұрын
yes absolutely. if i know a chalker is slow to do the math, i'll just add it up for them dart by dart. it helps most of the time. no matter what don't pull your darts before you agree on the score. 2nd question pro events generally have everyone exit on the scorer side because the streaming/camera is on the other side and you don't want to block the view of the next player's first dart. for the events i help run, players just have to exit on the same side every time (and on every board in floor events, that way you don't have two players on boards next to each other exit the same way at the same time and have a traffic jam of sorts).
@TheRip72 Жыл бұрын
In pub leagues, you often get a scorer who is not very fast. You must wait for them to count it & surely if they are slow, they are also prone to errors so you want them to get it right? Rule 5.4.3 also states: Darts shall be retrieved from the dartboard by the throwing Player but only after the score has been called by the Referee or recorded by the Marker. So there it is in the rules: wait for the scorer to call your score before retrieving your darts.

I think I always shake hands before retrieving the darts. First of all, it's kind of respect to the opponent (first him, then you/your darts, just like you say "you and I" and not "I and you"). Secondly, you are probably closer to your opponent than to your darts anyway (he is one meter away, your darts more than two, so if you retrieve your darts first you literally waste time and also you'll make the loss last longer for your opponent, which is unneccessary). Thirdly, the opponent might feel disrespected if you only shake hands with him after you got your darts (as if he is just a victim to you and you want your weapons back before facing him again, just as a show-off). And lastly, your opponent is obviously more important than the caller/writer, so you naturally shake his hands first, while if you retrieve your darts first you'll probably end up shaking the writers' hands first because he is closer to you after retrieving your darts. After that I shake hands with the writer. After all, he IS important. He stood there, writing down your throws, counting for both of you. Maybe for quite a long time because you were so darn bad that day. He spend some time just so that you and your opponent could have a game. He deserves some respect. Of course sometime you strongly dislike your opponent. Maybe he acted inappropriately or whatever. Only in those cases I do walk to my darts first. But still, I've never had a situation in which I didn't give a handshake. There have to happen a lot during or before a game for me not giving a handshake. You might have seen that I wrote "I think" at the beginning. Well, I'm not perfect, sometimes I lose my etiquette or are in such a tunnel that I just walk to the board after I won. In those situations I might do it the other way around. But even in those situation, everybody, no matter what, gets a handshake. Always. Also, I remember the first time I've checked a big fish (a Treble-Treble-Bull finish, in my case 164, I personally don't think only a 170 is a big fish), and I screamed in joy and relieve, but before getting my darts back I turned back and shook my opponent's hands apologizing for screaming so aggressively loud. I think it's just appropriate. He just said he's fine with it and he understands my reaction, and I would have as well, but that's besides the point. By the way, the writer fistbumped me seconds later as well: You can even show respect if you are a writer/caller. And coming to think about it, it happens a lot of times that it isn't a handshake but a fistbump. It seems like there are no rules about that. Sometimes one happens, sometimes the other. I've had fistbumps after I lost and after I won with players I liked and with players I didn't. I've had handshakes after I lost and after I won with both types of players as well. I can't remember of any specific situation that makes one thing happen or the other. A handshake is probably more personal, but a fistbump is just as fine and I've had a lot of handshakes with people I don't know and a lot of fistbumps with people I do know.

These same guys are the ones who don't add their score while throwing, don't pay attention to their score and never know when they're on a checkout possibility. After a win I shake hands then collect my darts....unless the opponent has pissed me off in some way, then I make them wait until I got my darts from the board 😁

I'd need to win a game for me to know if i celebrate or shake hands first 😔

I like shaking things up especially if the game isn’t going my way, eg drop a dart when collecting and spend a while ‘trying’ to pick up also randomly returning to the oche left rather than right. Dark arts, cheeky etc but does me well.

Not keen on fistbumps. Especially after watching someone wipe their nose with the back of their hand and knuckles. And many do.

I always turn around to shake hands, and then go collect my darts. Show respect to your opponent, they may want to get off the board quick and not wait.

Why do most dart players after winning, shake their heads before hand shaking ?
@Edgartvdarts Жыл бұрын
Cause they wanted to play better. It’s very silly have a watch I of an episode I did call what players say after a games. It’s got me and MvG on the thumbnail

win the game collect darts the match is then over . then shake hands then back to thank marker cant go wrong with that pet hate is when a winner or looser jus walks off without even acknowledging the marker or caller .

If you are that arrogant or dislike your opponent that much that you dont shake his/hers hand, then you better win or you will be ridicuoled after the game. Probably will be ridicuoled even if you win. Didnt Phil Taylor do this "a few" times in his career🤔

One thing I think is a little bit of sour grapes.. Sometimes a player will win, turn around to immediately offer the handshake, then realise the beaten opponent has decided to go and put the darts away first (sometimes quite slowly). Thus, the winner is stood in purgatory when what they really want to do is get on with celebrating.

Have any players ever used the handshake as a means to either injure or put off their opponent? I was just thinking that if someone went in with a brutally hard handshake they could cause their opponent some discomfort during the match and give themelves an unfair advantage. Also, someone could approach the handshake with something on their hands that would leave an unpleasant smell and put their opponent off - e.g. holding a three-day old raw fish in their hand before going on stage for the handshake. Has anything like this ever happened? I've heard of players farting at the oche to put people off, so I wonder if the handshake has ever been another potential point for gamesmanship?

What would the ruling be if the ref calls match, you shake your opponent’s hand, but a dart falls out the board?

Fist bump only, unless they’re clearly insisting. I’m not even a “germ a phone”, however; I know where darts players hands have been, and it’s disgusting 🤮

Yeah fistbumps are so much better after the other person has been wiping their nose with their knuckles 🤣

I actually always thought a handshake was a required method of good sportmanship, really. But I have to ask - why do the players shake the hands of the officials?

Retrieve first, thank opponent second, thank marker third, celebrate LAST.

I myself will only shake hands with my opponents when i win but i never ever shake hands with them when i lose,needless to say i have never shaken anyones hands at the darts in over 40 years of playing.

I always retrieve the darts then shake the hand in case they fall out lol
@TheRip72 Жыл бұрын
Which is correct because according to the rules, they do not count until the score has been called & the darts retrieved.

Never throw your darts into the crowd after a 9 darter as a celebration. Never bring out a compass as you practice "To work out the oche's orientation to the Earths magnetic field."
