If you ever do a break down of everything that goes into Space Marine Power Armor, make sure you go over everything that makes a Space Marine, a Space Marine as well. Without the implants and genetic engineering that goes into making an Astartes the armor is nigh unusable. Warhammer 40,000 has books dedicated to the subject. It'd be very interesting for you to delve into, considering that there are several juicy diagrams and 'blueprints' regarding the inner workings of said armor. Very in depth.

Highly doubt it. Unless combat changes I’d never wear that damn thing because with my OIF/OEF combat experience. That just to carry a saw or 240 means it’s a raid, your pulling security for the extraction route and the entire mission is executed perfectly without any issues. Now, putting the new tribarrel .50 cal or a Gatling gun and increasing the firepower for the group would make sense. However, I already can see problems with that still. Dropping in the prone that thing would be in the way. No matter what that mount is a nuisance and won’t be used. Just like all the tech they tried before with the one eye optical connected to a camera system on your weapon so you can look and fire around corners only exposing your weapon. They tossed it out because it was too expensive and we have drones now that any commander on ground can view footage of in real-time and relay info or those watching/providing support. Believe it or not most of the time old tech works best. I dislike when the military tries and fixes what’s not broken and those never been in multiple combat zones nor combat start designing things to help those on the ground move quicker and carry more with less strain but depend heavily on electronics ect. The only thing I approved of was the motorcycle helmet. However that helmet be used for VIPS ect. Only bullet proof helmet design that protects the head from most rifles and pistols. They designed it to protect the head, deliver information and have different types of views so you get rid of wearing NVGs ect. However it’s still being worked on. I really hope they just use it for important people being extracted for full body protection and not in combat. Well, future wise I can only see UAVs being used more on the battlefield but who knows. We’re already forming a space defense force now.

DocWolph I know exactly what he was speaking of but I was replying to someone else’s comment. The “loader” will be for the fobbits. However, it would be used more on the bigger bases vs the small COPs. I still say UAVs will be cheaper and more realistic. Exosuits until we find a resource that doesn’t contaminant the operator and rarely need to be charged I highly doubt the loader will be even used because it’s slow vs a Diesel engine powered vehicle.

@casbot71
@casbot71 5 жыл бұрын
@@nuclearjanitors The exoskeleton was bolted on because he was suffering terminal radiation sickness and needed it to just hold him upright, it wasn't just boosting his muscles, it was being his muscles. The only reason he was jumping around in the final scenes was because he had just OD'ed on meds and was on a amphetamine type high. And the reason they went for such drastic invasive surgery is because he was dead in a week so he had nothing left to lose and if he got into one of the magic pods it could be removed. I think it came from a droid (which is why it had hex anchor bolts like Max was using in the factory where the droids were made) and had been repurposed as a exoskeleton, they were using a lot of salvaged, jury rigged and modified gear - they didn't have access to state of the art military equipment like the strap on exoskeleton. He was a "Favela ninja" not a mercenary soldier with a energy shield and integrated control systems. Like today using a semi automatic to fill auto conversation with a overrated rate of fire and extended magazines with hot load ammo. It's powerful, but it might blow up in your hands or jam at any moment. It's deadly compared to what's available to a civilian, but not as refined as a factory built military gun. But where life is cheap you don't care.

Maybe if there's another follow up video … Just a thought, in this cautionary tale of what happens when societies leaders are unwilling to stomach the hard decisions: The villains exoskeleton has one other serious issue, it was bolted on over and through clothes. So how does he remove his pants to use the toilet? And considering he's got terminal radiation sickness, he's going to want to use the toilet often and quickly without warning. @davegrenier1160
@davegrenier1160 5 жыл бұрын
One of the things they really blew in Elysium was the orbital habitat. In order for a "ringworld" type habitat to work, in which centripetal force keeps the atmosphere bound within the walls of the habitat, the walls have to be tens of miles high! There are two ways to generate one atmosphere of pressure in a ringworld habitat - spin the habitat so the apparent "gravity" increases the weight of the atmosphere captured by the spin (and thereby increasing the effect on everything else in the habitat, including the occupants) or pile enough air above a one-gee habitat such that it's pressure approximates one A. The earth does the latter with a column of air above your head that dozens of miles tall. The same would be necessary on a ringworld habitat - it would need miles-tall walls to contain a sufficient weight of atmosphere. The walls of the Elysium habitat were what - a few hundred feet tall at best? An atmosphere in a one-g ring of that size wouldn't support life - it would be like living at 90,000 feet, just shy of being in space.

That's because the 1988 anime follows the plot and descriptions in the book pretty closely. Though, calling it an exoskeleton is somewhat a misnomer. also surprising that we have more powerful computers on our wrists now than they had total computation capacity in the world in the 50's. Then on top of that we have this thing called phone... I have never read or seen anything like it in scifi litterature or movies. Phones today is truly a marvelous thing if looked from the last century, any time in last century, even 1999. Mostly that i have seen in scifi, have been some tablets or wristcontrols, yes. but they have relied on a centralized maincomputer and without connection to it, they render total useless, not even local comms works. Our wristwatches and phones still works. there's models with walkietalkie radio circuits, navigates without support solely relying on built in compass, and calculates etc without connection to central computer (Internez), it just cuts off some information related stuff. That is something that most best scifi writers didnt get in... Not even in Startrek the handheld apparatus is that fine what is a modern phone or wristwatch.

Honestly I've always thought that Fallout, specifically Fallout 4's, power armor is actually pretty realistic to what we'd see IRL. A Sort of Juggernaut suit used by specialised infantry, allowing them to bridge the gap between infantry and mechanized armor like tanks. Not to mention, even the power source is somewhat possible and makes sense. The only unrealistic thing is the same as all other mechanized suits, and that's that people seem to think that because they're wrapped in metal, they can jump from any height. Reality is you'd quickly become a red puddle in the bottom of your suit if you tried that IRL. I guess they can have dampeners and such to allow you to jump from greater heights, but even still it will only be a matter of a few meters, rather than tens or even hundreds of meters like some of these movies claim.

In the novel, _All You Need is Kill_ (original version of Edge of Tomorrow), the protagonist ends up facing this exact problem within the first few pages. They always figured that no mere infantryman would ever live long enough on their own to have to utilize all of their shoulder ammo, which was really only effective at close range anyways. However, after he figures out he’s the last one in his unit who hasn’t been slaughtered yet, he does a quick ammo check on all his weapons and realizes he’s out of everything, except for a few rounds left in his shoulder weapon. He starts cursing at his luck in life because he can’t reload the damn thing on his own and the enemy is right on top of him. It’s at that point, he realizes he’s pretty much about to die in a few seconds, which becomes the moment he first meets Rita.

Matt Damon's character was already dying from acute radiation poisoning and only had days to live anyway. Assuming that he did survive his ordeal, the med bays in Elysium would have fixed him anyway. So the lack of antibiotics/sanitary operating conditions was a non-issue. Additionally, the suit he was wearing was Russian - this is commentary about the real world analog of how Russian technology has always historically lagged behind First World tech and also speaks of the desperation behind their actions and the sketchy nature of black market tech.

If Russian tech has generally lagged behind Western tech then why did they get the super reliable AK47 with 30 rounds per mag while the west were using bolt action rifles with a 3rd of that? Why was it that the Russkis developed the tank cupbola? Why was it that they were the 1st to have off boresight targetting by up to 70 degrees while Western fighters still needed to get on the nose to achieve a lock? You know that the designer of the f22, called Gary, studied refractal wave physics at tbe feet of Russki scientist Pyote Ufimtsev, later using that science to produce the f22? I have more...

What type of sci-fi exoskeleton would perform better? A mechanical one with hydraulics and cables or a biological one with artificial muscles? (Great vid!)
@Tezunegari
@Tezunegari 5 жыл бұрын
I'd put my money on artificial muscles (AM from here). Hydraulics are vulnerable and the moment their containment is compromised or a piston bend the system won't work. AM (like the ones used in Crysis Suits) can partially tear but still be used albeit at a reduced rate. Theoretically it might even be less power intense if you have access to memory materials that can switch between two states (or according to the energy channelled similar to real muscles) . And AM would offer a cushioning effect if they are engineered around a soft material with the mentioned memory abilities. Downside of AM would be the complexity of repairs. Hydraulics have that one on their side.

One of the problems I had with the suits in Edge of Tomorrow was the choice of a very short 5.56 carbine for the wrist guns. Like you pointed out that place might be useful for a close combat weapon, but 5.56 is best at medium ranges (it was optimized for firefights at about 200m), so an auto-shotgun would be a far better choice especially if it fires frag rounds.

The problem with lag in exoskeleton might not dissapear when liked directly to the brain. Human brain tends to preload movement information in to the rest of the body and repeated action triggers muscle memory. With an exoskeleton linked directly, this memory issue may become serious. Humans tend to learn movements by repeating them and loading them in to their muscle memory, as well as making brand new brain connections to load and trigger memory. After time this memory contains ton of stuff and this system tends to work pretty well when guessing what to do Our machines though are not very good even when it comes to guessing what word will be next in a written sentence. No seriously, autocorrect is an endless pain in the butt. Learning then, on how to guess next desired move seems next to impossible with todays technology.

While auto correct is pretty bad, machine learning is an active area of research and we can reasonably expect it to improve over the coming years. In addition, language is extremely flexible; start a sentence with “I will” or any other subject followed by a verb and the sentence could go any number of directions. I suspect that movement is much less varied and thus more predictable.

I've never found exoskeletons to be cool when they were basically humanized motion in a metal shell. I always wanted them to be slow, heavy, whirring or hydraulic sounds - solidifying that they are mobile infantry, but at the same time a tank. Power Armor shouldn't run with human motion, but rather slow motions at high speed (meaning longer steps). Mostly they are just made for walking. Strong enough to deflect any projectiles that you would be susceptible to. Space Marines of WH40k kinda do this well; they do move very fast, but when they do run they do it in long steps. Heavy weaponry utilizing HUDs while "small arms" bolters more utilize experience. Also the suits interface with their body, so if they tense up their bicep, the suit responds in kind. Seems to be more that it reads the body than the mind.
@hellothere_1257
@hellothere_1257 5 жыл бұрын
I think you are wrong about shoulder mounted weapons. Think about it, a computer tracks the soldier's eye movement on his HUD to select targets, an image recognition program then determines the exact outline of the enemy soldier, and the robotic arm holding the rifle uses that information to fire dead accurate shots even under heavy recoil and mid-sprint. Also since the rifle is mounted above the user's head and gets targeted via the HUD you can fire over obstacles or around corners while staying completely within cover. If you ever played airsoft or a realistic military shooter you'll know that the ability to accurately fight an enemy without exposing yourself to him makes for a complete gamechanger. The sound is of course a bit of a problem but you can easily solve that via high or low tech earmuffs.

The hearing problem is a bit of a non-issue really, as a conventional rifle is easily closer to your ear than a shoulder mounted weapon would be anyway, and communication systems have been developed to operate using ear plugs to sense vocal resonance in the inner ear, whilst also operating as a speaker to receive communications. The main problems would be integrating the targeting, and recoil control systems into a package which could be carried by a person, and which wouldn't affect the ability to pass through a doorway.

The armor was removed also because of that fact that sentinels, which would be the primary enemy unit they would face, would be able to cut through the armor and it's pilot regardless, making the armor redundant in many ways to the point of being almost entirely superficial. Additionally, for the trained pilots of Zion, the armor and whatever systems were incorporated was stated to be more of a hindrance than an aid, which might where the speed argument comes in. It's a relatively small detail, yet a peeve of mine nonetheless. A mechanized frame surrounding, and worn by a person is an exoskeleton. Operational purpose is to reduce felt weight by the operator, as opposed to provide protection. Add full body armored plates to that frame, and it's powered armor. Now, that frame's purpose is to provide protection to the operator. While most powered armors do provide the user with some form of augmented strength, it's limited due to the weight of the armor itself. Exception to the norm is Mjolnir Powered Armor from the Halo universe, which augments the strength of the user (who is already stronger than a typical person), while offering a high degree of bodily protection. Once the unit is no longer covering the body, but rather has a definable 'cockpit' from which the operator pilots the frame, it's no longer effectively armor. At this point, the frame is considered a Mecha, as it is a human piloted robotic platform. Or at least, these are the broad categories as I've come to understand them, classified by intended role and means of operation. The difficulty with categorizing these is a result of most people being largely unaware of the differences, or simply do not care enough to bother with the differences.

About the shoulder mounted stuff 1. Rockets don't have recoil 2. This is the millitary, a suppressor that doesn't slow the bullet will help.
@crplsteve
@crplsteve 5 жыл бұрын
Rockets do have recoil, its all just vented out the back instead of all escaping via the barrel. A suppressor by operation slows down the muzzle velocity of the bullet, this is because all that propellant gas is siphoned off and made to travel further thus reducing the pressure behind the bullet. Not only that if you are using non subsonic munitions, you will still get a ear piercing crack as the round goes through the sound barrier upon leaving the barrel.

The thing about exoskeletons are they’ll be a net zero when it comes to the user’s comfort and convenience. What I mean by that is, the more weight you can carry, the more weight they’ll make you carry as standard.

The No-Armor thing with several of these armors isn't an issue because the enemy does so much damage that no amount of realistically mountable armor would do more than slow them down for a split second, meaning mounting it is pretty much pointless when you can save the weight/bulk and thus increase the mobility. To put it simply, why wear a bulletproof vest on a battlefield where everyone's using anti armor rocket launchers?
@a.t6066
@a.t6066 5 жыл бұрын
That's silly. So say everyone is firing rocket launchers on a battlefield and I opt not to wear a bulletproof vest because of that.... Then I fall down and get impaled on a stick or get shrapnel to the chest. Armor isn't there to stop everything, it's there to stop specific things. Think about why soldiers wear helmets to battle. It's more weight and doesn't stop rifle ammunition but does that mean it shouldn't be worn?
@arielfetters5662
@arielfetters5662 5 жыл бұрын
Helmets actually WILL stop bullets up to a particular caliber, and are heavily built enough, plus 'styled' in such a way as to maximize the chance to make an incoming bullet ricochet as opposed to penetrate. As for the stick and Shrapnel... not a bad point. A bodysuit incorporating safety features (Like fire resistance) with an outer layer of kinetic reactive gel would be a decent addition.

The reason movies (and games) ditch armor and helmets is largely to make the actor more human and relatable, as well as allowing the director to just use the actor's face to highlight emotion. Maybe people should stop trying the spin the novel Starship Troopers as something fascist and instead note that those suits checked every box that makes power armor work.

I remember the first time I watched the Starship Troopers movie with my mom, who was a fan of the novel. She told me about all the differences in tech between the movie and book, and while I do love the movie for what it is, I still want to see fully armored soldiers bouncing around firing personal nuke launchers

@@olivermckowen135 Yeah, the movie blew my 8 year old mind when I first saw it. I still love it. It's a pretty rad action movie, and the special effects have aged astonishingly well - partly because they didn't try to do cgi mech suits with 1997-level tech, I think. However, I gotta give credit where it's due, and while the movie is a great action flick, the novel was a rad sci-fi setting and I really liked how Heinlein depicted the rising cost of training and equipping soldiers and how elite their expensive gear made them.

The problem of hiding the actor's face is why Iron Man has all those in-helmet shots with the HUD -- instead of Tony disappearing into the suit, or the suit not having a mask, you get the best of both worlds.

If actors wore full covering exoskeletons, you could say it's unrealistic too. For example, in the Matrix, a full armor covering wouldn't have saved anyone. The squids could cut and tear through armor, so all it really means is a few more moments of life and a slower mech. I'd imagine they also had other things they could repurpose the extra metal for. They also need more situational awareness. In the Day after Tomorrow, they're facing an alien enemy that is winning, has great numbers, and can also tear through armor/structures. When you're fighting a war for your life, more bullets shot at the enemy matters than more defense. You also have to allocate materials to build hardware as efficiently as possible. One exoskeleton like in the movie, vs one fully armored exoskeleton....that would take like 10+ exoskeletons of materials to build for one soldier. At that point, armoring one soldier for very little benefit vs making 10 suits for 10 soldiers with the same firepower, would be a huge tactical error. It's not just the material, but also the build time. One fully armored mech suit would take way longer to make, not to mention more power to operate. This is the same reason why we don't have mechs today. Technically, you could say a tank is a mech. It has basically the same functions, even more firepower than a mech would ever have, but it's slow, takes a lot of resources and time to build, and can be defeated. It certainly offers WAY better armor than a mech suit ever would, and moves faster too, and does so more efficiently. Having to lift and move forward giant metal legs takes way more energy than turning a wheel. So the truth is, mechs aren't very efficient in general. So why didn't they use tanks in the Day after Tomorrow? They probably did. But you have to keep in mind, this was the final battle. It was the all or nothing battle. They were already on the verge of losing the war. So the tactic was to throw everything they could at the enemy, and they didn't have much time to do it. Tanks and a large mech are also fairly useless against an agile fast moving enemy. Only good for ranged attacks. Once the enemies got up close, there wouldn't be much they could do to fight back. You're certainly not shooting tank shells at your feet, especially not with your own infantry around you. Even an advanced large armored mech would take forever to turn around, even if it rotated at the waist, because you have to move tons upon tons of weight. And all of those require hardware to do, hardware that once damaged can't be easily fixed, and pretty much makes having the extra armor futile. Some kind of hydraulic system goes out, and your mech is useless. Even ONE thing destroyed would make an armored suit useless. On a tank, you can lose wheels and still be in the game. On a mech, if one of your leg hydraulics gets taken out.....you can't move anymore. You can't even turn to aim anymore. The truth is, mech suits aren't the future and never will be. They can aid battle, but beyond that, a heavily armored vehicle with a turret weapon will be far more effective. The main reason for exoskeleton suits is reducing the weight of the weapons. That's it. A 10lb gun might not sound all that heavy, but try carrying around a 10lb weight all day....you'll be aching. Then there's ammo and other supplies. So really, they just allow a soldier to effortlessly carry more, which keeps the soldier from being as easily fatigued. Most people would be out of breath before they could finish sprinting a mile, with nothing but shorts on. Let alone with a backpack full of supplies and ammo and 40lbs worth of weapons. At that rate, most people wouldn't be able to run 2 blocks without being winded, and by the time they got to where they needed to go, they would be soo exhausted they wouldn't be able to fight effectively. So in conclusion, there's absolutely nothing wrong with how exoskeleton suits are portrayed in films.

I agree with most of your points. In Elysium, the drilling of the exoskeleton into the brain and spine was not a structural thing, it was implanting crude neurological and thought-based sensors for the exoskeleton. It had nothing to do with the exoskeleton's support system, just direct neural access. Also, its exoskeleton was supposed to be a cheap black market hack of its technology. It was the best criminal counterfeit to body-boosting they had. I thought it was dead, spot-on perfect for the story. It was a rich vs. poor story with the Yakuza (criminals who learned to love the poor) becoming the metaphorical Robin Hoods (again, criminals who learned to love the poor). When the law protects and empowers those with all the wealth and power, the best criminal forces become the heroes.

Some say "No armor is best armor" but in EoT context, I think the lack of armor is due to required speed of production, quantity, cost, raw material & weight. And for an obvious reason, unprecedented alien invasion. The hearing loss is a very legit fact.

I just want a power armor like the Marauder class suit mentioned in the Starship Troopers book and shown in Starship Troopers traitor of Mars. It has jump Jets, back mounted rockets/machine guns and most of the stuff is controlled by clicking your HUD with your eyes and jaw leaving your hands open to carry the standard infantry rifle.
