One difference between city life and homesteading life; when you hear a gunshot in the city the cops are called. When you live in a rural/homesteading area that means one less predator that is after your animals. Oh, and I have a bbq/smoker but have plans to build a smokehouse soon.

I did it in the 80s and with 5 acres. It was a farm from 1644 and lots of exiting building for the chickens, pigs, for sheep, one for repairing shoo’s, one for baking, one for smoking fish and meat, one for washing and a farm for at least 20 people - because they had employed at least 10-15 people in old days. It was så much work I did quit and studied Engineer and living in the city with my family. Both was stressing, if I am honest. But freedom is of corse much larger in a homestead. But you have to be prepared it is another stress following the nature and springtime and harvesting is not a easy task. Nature don’t wait for us. Now I live in the wood with a huge garden and 2 minutes down to the beach and watching wales and dolphins when possible. Fishing salmon, trout, Mackerel, and together with potatos and fresh salad from the garden is enough for me. Its enough food for us for the Winter and selling some of it on farmers marked is fun. Just little stress in the springtime and fall and when der are deer or elk /moose are entering the garden….😱🤪🎉

Hey now! I have a half acre. It's not a subdivision. The houses are actually far apart the neighbors are my mag. I can. I have chickens. I have a vegetable garden that I rotate with spring summer and winter crops. The butchering thing I can't get past, it killed me to have to dispatch two chickens that were sick so I guess I'll live off vegetables and eggs LOL but at least I'll live! Oh and my house is paid for I paid cash so no mortgage.

Great video. Still laughing at "goats are like drunken teenagers". Yes, they are! However, as a goat owner, they have a very good feed to milk ratio and you can put them on browse land (they prefer shrubs over pasture). Mine have a buttermilk content over 7% (Nigerian Dwarf goats) and for us they work (cheese, yogurt, butter, etc.). For homesteaders in mountain/wilderness areas, they are a better "fit" than sheep. Like sheep, their manure is not "hot" and can be applied whenever. So, depending on location, goats may work better for some folks. However, they are hard to contain and total buttheads most days. 😂😂😂
@hickoryhillinthebigwoods-r759 Жыл бұрын
The city for me is Batesville or Searcy. Both are too large for my liking, yet not enough options for when we "need" something. I did just discover the health food store in Searcy. I disagree. My goats are much easier to manage than my sheep...at least when it comes to trying to care for them. My sheep are crazy! Absolutely impossible to catch. LOL Have you heard of Epic Gardening? What that guy has done to his small plot of land/property is amazing!

We've been on our homestead since 1987 and still going strong! We bought a finished house with no outbuildings, no fencing, and no land improvements. We turned the blank-slate into a fully-functioning homestead! We've landscaped and built our 3 big gardens. We also built an addition onto our house, build a back porch, built a polycarb greenhouse, our barn, goat shed, 2 general purpose sheds, a propane house (designed to look like an outhouse), covered hay racks for the horses and the goat herd, a nice pig pen and pig condo unit, a rabbitry, and we installed 4-board fencing around some of our acreage. We built a range, too, much to the disappointment of a few 'transplant' Karens (who learned the County laws when they tried to control our rights...heh heh). We did all of this by ourselves, with the help of our tractor and skidsteer. We're 69 yrs of age, still very active/healthy, still very much DIYers, and still loving homestead life and all of the satisfaction we are blessed with. We've loved the privacy and freedom offered to us by being rural and on a homestead. Our property is gated (intentionally). One freedom not mentioned by you is the freedom from people dropping by unannounced. By gating our property, we have no unwelcome visitors/strangers. And we have no neighbors dropping in to do whatever they do (waste our time). So FREEDOM for us includes having the ability to control our time efficiently while also protecting our privacy. Homesteading isn't for lazy people and it is NOT an ideology....it's a commitment to live in a self-reliant way.

I haven't enjoyed visiting cities in 40 years. They are unnatural, synthetic, chaotic, loud. You can often tell when people first move from a city to the country. They are loud as if competing with the background noise they used to be in. Iowa DNR sells trees and shrub saplings. This year I purchased 25 plum saplings, gave most away and planted 10 on our land. Total cost of 25 saplings including shipping $40. All ten still alive during a brutal hot summer. Next year we will be getting berry saplings. We have already tilled in sulfur to lower the pH before the plants arrive. I urge you all to look for items like this for your land.

Realtors don’t do mortgages. Maybe you need to blame yourself for not understanding how mortgages work. There is principal, interest, taxes, insurance commonly called PITI. It’s not uncommon for 3 out of the four to fluctuate (go up). Maybe the realtor didn’t know, but most likely they told you what the principal payment might be. Anyway, it’s your responsibility to educate yourself if you are entering a real estate transaction or hire an attorney that can explain it to you. I’m sorry it didn’t work out. Have you begun learning what you didn’t understand or are you just going to continue to blame others?
