Built fences professionally for over 5 years. The only point that I'm not in total agreement on is the bagged concrete. When I was mixing (and training) I always made it rich (extra Portland cement). Not ridiculously, but enough to know I was better than the 4:1 ratio standard. I never had any problems with my concrete. On a side note. Years of experience isn't necessarily an indicator of competence. I remember going out and repairing much more experienced installers shoddy work.

I am underway with my fence project and now realize the benefits of using steel posts. As I install future sections of fence, in stages, I plan to use steel posts. In Minneapolis frost-line 4 feet!

So, basically, don't skimp on anything. Cement, post, pickets, and fasteners, that's the whole fence.

You recommended a minimum 8 inch hole. Assuming that size and using a steel post, how much concrete do you use, a 50, 60, 80 lb bag or simply fill the 8 inch hole to the top? Some will fill half full using a 4x4 and backfilling with dirt.

Trying to move an existing fence over 8 feet. Would it be okay to reuse the panels between the posts? Or is it worth buying new wood?

If possible, I'd suggest buying new wood. It's incredibly difficult to get the existing wood panels to fit back together perfectly.

My fence is 18 years old. I have replaced two posts and no foam does not work. I will say that staining a fence is very important and adds to the life of a fence. I prefer solid stain and periodically will go around and stain certain parts of the fence multiple times in the same year on the cut edges across the top. This keeps water from penetrating the boards. I cannot tell you how many fences around my house look like tee total crap. If you are going to have a fence don't be that neighbor who doesn't know how to care for and maintain a fence. Periodically clean your fence. My neighbor bought a fence and he has lived behind me for five years. His fence is almost black with mold. So disgusting. Can we do anything about people like that in an HOA? Another maintenance tip is to go around and use stainless steel deck screws to tighten loose boards yearly. Ask your fence builder to use stainless steel deck screws to attach the pickets. They do not react to the chemicals in pressure treated wood. Use 15/8 inch deck screws to tighten pickets to the nailer boards so they won't go all the way through and leave a point on the back side of the nailer. Get your fence person to go around with a laminate saw and cut the bottoms of your fence about 1 inch away from the ground. Moisture rots fences. Keep all vegetation away from your fence. Moisture rots fences. NO, it was not easy to do this but it sure beats buying a new fence.(It is also easier to weed eat under the fence to keep grass away from the fence - you got it moisture rots fences) Upgrade your boards. My fence guy said he used spruce. I will have to take his word for it because I wouldn't know spruce if it bit me. I have also replaced some pickets maybe eight out of 500 and I would replace more if I had a truck to haul them over to my house but it still looks good even though the tree roots have me leaning in a few spots. Don't let you trees hang down on your fence. I keep them cut high enough I can walk under them to mow(push behind) . P.S. Birds love to poop on posts that stick up above the fence top.( Don't get fence post higher than the pickets. ) These are my recommendations from living with a fence for eighteen years and I hope yours will last as long but based on my neighbors I got a feeling that you are going to say I will buy a new fence before I spend anytime on my fence and you will pay. For those who care these tips will help you for years to come. I am not a fence contractor nor will I be. I am 70 years young and hope my fence lasts me until I am gone.

60/40 with Portland is cheaper and stronger concrete.
@GingrBreadMan4 жыл бұрын
Also a do not like the preferred method that quikrete has marketed to consumers, I've dug up enough old fences to know exactly what jobs were done with quikrete. The top will be solid enough but extremely easy to just break with a spud and the bottom and middle portion is just gravel basically.
