I am a freelance video editor as well and I am finding it difficult to manage my time between work and learning new skills can you share some knowledge on this topic you can also create a video on this topic. Thank you! I script, shoot, edit, animations, thumbnails all by myself. It’s definitely not easy to manage it all and there are some periods where I have to prioritise one thing more than another. However, I always try to make sure family comes first. For me it comes down to planning and creating sustainable structures/routines. I use Notion for all of that (I have a video on that). Helps to have an overview of the week as well as long term plans etc. If you can break it down into smaller more manageable tasks it helps a lot. Obviously also just being as productive as I can with my time.

Cause in film they use the 9 shot rule when they run out of ideas for whats gonna be the next shot, its there temporary anchor

Initially I was trying to do it with an expression setup from ECAbrams but because I wanted a pretty detailed grid it would just be too complex. I ended up getting the Flex plugin to rig up the grid and then from there it was pretty straight forward to animate.

This is great advice man, thank you for the video! Really liked what you said about gaining confidence to help you keep going and keep pushing yourself. Sometimes learning about motion design (or learning anything) can feel overwhelming, and you can feel like you are not cut out for it... but with practice, patience you can do it!

I’m still working on my setup but the main pieces I have is a Mac Studio with 64gb of ram, MX Master mouse, and a ProArt display for accurate colours. I used to work on a laptop. Most important is ram and (for me) a colour accurate display.

I saw a 30 second TV commercial I really liked, ran to my room, captured it on my PC and started to made it myself researching tons and tons of things. It was super scary at first but actually awesome. By checking the material frame by frame I learned so much about this type of animation (It was a mix of stop motion, fake stop motion and "real footage" (arms moving things around). What fps is used, that they dont just use black and white but actually its slightly purple and white, which fits the rest of the colors, how they align movement of fake stop motion and real arm movements (just don't move the arm in real life, only move hand and the arm away), but also cool things like how to make compositions that feel balanced... i cant explain it. WHen to break the fake stop motion effect and when not.. Its not just refrabricating the thing.. Im more thinking like: THATS GEnius! Getting in the same mindset as the real maker. Getting the animation. I still like your video's Mapal, you teached me to remake things. If I ever make some money this way I will send you some. I clicked on the Skillshare link. You still come up with cool videos: Not too beginnerfriendly. That's the hard part now that I bootcamped Ae and Ps for 3 months: finding videos NOT covering the basics. Hopefully they have those kind of videos there. And otherwise i still have plenty of videos of you that i still need to watch.

That’s awesome! Love that you just dug right in and did a whole bunch of problem solving. As I mentioned in the video, that skill and desire to learn is gonna get you far. I do a lot of “how to animate like” videos but the purpose is not to just replicate but learn to break down, process, understand choices, and see how techniques can be used across many different scenarios. Skillshare has so many cool classes for different levels. Personally, the Blender Learning Path has been awesome because it goes from absolute beginner and then builds on top of those skills and gets more and more advanced. Hopefully you find some really useful classes on there!

Thank you! It's way simpler than you'd think. I just keyframed the source text and changed the font. So it's switching between a regular font and a dummy text font (just blocks).

Great question! I’m not worried about that at all. No one can ever replicate my brain, how I think, or how I see things. When it comes to my client work I just do my thing and you can’t do it unless you’re me. No matter what people will always imitate/try to duplicate. It might be easy to replicate specific things or copying the animation itself but you can’t copy the brain that makes it. That’s generally my perspective on most things, which is also why I’m not worried about AI in the slightest.

Work on it on the side and try to incorporate it in your work. Most likely you'll have to dedicate extra time, put in extra work, and generally just go the extra mile until you get to a point where it's your main thing.

I haven’t taken it myself but probably the Skillshare learning path on After Effects called “Adobe After Effects Basics: Start Animating” and then work your way from there. I’d recommend also focusing and learning from traditional animation so you can understand motion better!

When I started out I just watched a lot of beginner KZbin tutorials. However, I’d recommend using the free month of skillshare to take a structured class. The Learning Paths in particular have been super good. They do a great job of taking you through the absolute basics and working your way up.

Hey dude, always enjoy your videos! I have a question, im working as a video editor for an agency that makes videos for yt. Theres a lot for work, so i dont have the energy to sit and practice editing styles i like after work. Do you think that as a freelancer theres more room to improve, as you pick the clients you ll work for?and also you decide when you ll take a break

Depends! There are a lot of pros and cons with each of those. I imagine that it’s a pretty steady income working with an agency, which is something you don’t really get working 100% freelance. With that being said I think with being able to choose your clients and setting your rates you can create some more freedom in that regard. I can’t speak to the type of work you do/how much freedom you have but don’t be afraid to experiment with new stuff in your work too

I love the effect at 6:32 where the video cuts from After Effects to you talking. What is that transition called? I thought it was a film burn at first but it looks different to all the ones I have

It is from a film burn asset pack from acidbite. You could do something similar yourself by using a white slate going across a black background and setting the blending mode to difference

You can set it up manually with expressions but I had such a detailed grid that I used Flex to rig it up. From there it was just about adding some movement etc

It can definitely be a challenge sometimes to force yourself to be creative. For me, I like to take the pressure off myself. Just work on stuff for yourself when you feel like. When you get an idea for something do it. If you don’t have any ideas that’s okay too. It’ll come eventually. Sometimes when I’m working a lot it can make it even more difficult because so much of my mental capacity is being used up by that. In that case it can be really helpful to take some time off. Main thing: don’t put too much pressure on yourself!
