I think unpredictability in your shots, using variety all the time and assessing your opponent's weaknesses quickly, is the difference between good and weak badminton players.

I'm British but live in Japan and work at a private school in Tokyo. Playing badminton in the school club with my students is one of my favourite things to do. I had never played before coming here, and the coach treats me rudely, thinking I can't understand his Japanese, and so refuses to help me learn. As a result, learning the game is made rather difficult. Having said that, thanks to this channel and a small handful of others I've been able to improve so much in just one year. I'm going to keep getting stronger and then be able to teach my students more than just how to speak English.

at 55 i really should embrace again a sport I used to represent the Royal Navy at. I guess my pride at knowing I am no longer capable of playing at anything like that standard now has made me feel it would be a pointless excercise but your videos have inspired me. I agree most whole heartedly with the " don't hit it to your opponent". The number of players that seem to do this all the time is really surprising. Also better to play a low percentage return that leads to a good position that a high percentage shot that gives them a huge positional advantage. Thanks again for making me think about this sport again.

I think the biggest differences I’ve seen playing with untrained vs trained players is the way they handle the racket and their footwork. Trained players can use just their racket to guide shots, without having to move their body along and they can vary shots easily and unpredictably and get more power with proper grip. Their footwork is also way more efficient and they don’t tiptoe and stumble after the shuttle, but often wait to pounce and use efficient, minimal steps which they can easily return back from without breaking form.

This video is a must watch. It improved my game no end. Especially the tip to watch opponent's body position to guess which shot they play and where they'll play it. Just won 4/5 games tonight.

I'd add a 6th one for beginners, speaking from experience: good coaching. I just started taking lessons a few months ago and while my coach is good, I feel he may be coaching me as if I'm a more advanced player who knows all the basics of the game already. Said coach is away for a month and I'm now taking lessons with a substitute coach who's fantastic with beginners like myself. Good coaching, along with having a playing partner on a similar skill level as yourself, can make all the difference when you're first starting out.

Awesome video Greg and Jenny!! I love watching your videos about badminton. There is one question if you answered, it would be much appreciated. In doubles, if the server serves the serves and shuttle is going to the wrong court(not diagonally) but the shuttle is hit by the receiver's partner, not by the receiver himself then who wins the point?
