My trade gets me around - I design and build custom furniture in Los Angeles but 5 years ago began taking on more custom carpentry/built-in work. I travel with a pretty full kit of tools and often end up living at the location in my 4x4 Asro van - I have friends all over the country so I'm always being invited to stay all over - ALso fortunate that people I've known for decades do well enough to hire me out, as well.... Many overlanders/vanlifers also take seasonal work, work in campgrounds, grounds keepers, etc.... When there's a will, there's a way

I have to imagine that saving up the money for the trip and budgeting it just so is part of the adventure. It’s likely more satisfying to know that you made this happen with your own hard work as opposed to just getting taken care of financially with some company’s money even if you were lucky enough to get sponsored. That being said I wouldn’t mind driving a free 2021 Defender with an unlimited gas card across the Gobi desert for a few months for saying a few nice things into the camera abut Land Rover.

I really like this video. Others on this topic are "follow this (easy)steps to get pay to travel". This is realistic, well argumented, thorough. It is hard to see how writing was a problem for you, as this video is so well written (but I get it, it was a problem some time ago).

Great Video again. For the charity rally (Dust and Diesel) that I regularly take part in, it is relatively easy to get sponsors. Some participants manage to have their costs partially or completely paid in this way. But that's only a short trip of around 3-4 weeks. And of course the sponsors want something in return in the form of a donation receipt or pictures with their company box (usually on a T-shirt) from the orphanage in Mauritania, which is supported by the rally. For my other trips to Africa, however, I see little chance of getting money. But I'll probably try writing articles in the future. Maybe that works at least a little.

Another way is to sell some of your photos on Shutterstock or other images - they cannot be brand related or reveal any brand. That could work in conjunction with writing for magazines / web sites. Also, you could reach some brands you use, and send them over product photos and if they are good enough, you could ask for something in exchange.

Well, one thing you overlooked is, if you have a successful brand/youtube channel like yours and others, you can do pretty good via Patreon and other donations. not to mention small incomes from youtube advertising and setting up a amazon account and selling your products. its not much but every penny counts.

I did work&travel in Australia so something like that (working here and there for a week or two) could help to earn some money but of course cuts down the travel time. What about successful KZbin channel creating income?

Marketing: If a tire company sponsors your trip and they are also the tire you use, mention that when talking about how rarely you get flats. When you come across someone whose stranded due to bad tires this might be a good time to talk about some tires that might have been a better idea. You don't have to beat us over the head but it's OK, to talk them up a bit as you stated up front that it was sponsored.

Though, to do that sort opf work you need a working Visa in the country you are tracelling in - it is convenient if you are "overlanding" (others - outside the adventure community - define living in a car as "homeless") in your home country or Visa Free region.

Once again, great info. But you're repeating yourself on this topic. Of the "5 ways to EARN MONEY on the road" mentioned here, it's been about 5 years now that you have mentioned, a number of times, saving money from one's own income before hitting the road is the most common among other travelers, most predictable, and most reliable. The only nuance in this video is, "[...by relying on one's own income/savings, you can enjoy your trip and not have to worry about trying to make money during the trip.]" That addition, even a greater reason to hit the road after saving sufficient to hit the road...not before or during. Thanks, again, for sharing, being consistent, and reassuring. Much appreciated.

ah you forgot patreon accounts etc, but I don't know how far these go to support budgets while on the road. I suppose these help spend less rather than actually make money.

Patreon can help, if you’re willing to put in the work (like everything else). I certainly think that Dan is underselling himself on Patreon. But Chris at Venture4wd makes $7,500/month on Patreon alone. Not too shabby, right? Add to that KZbin and merch, and it’s a good living... Bob at CheapRVliving clears $75-100k/year from KZbin, I believe. The caveat is, the market is now pretty crowded (perhaps over-saturated, actually), and it’s a lot of work developing your brand, editing quality/unique videos, constantly keeping up w social media, etc.. As Dan says, best way is to work “hark hard, save smart”, then take the trip

I'm familiar with one successful model that's proven profitable for many years and could be adapted: An at-sea instructional service for aspiring sailors who want to learn, in depth, the skill sets needed for international voyaging but also have a bit of an adventure while doing so. See e.g. mahina.com. If the overlander planned to travel in a series of interesting areas and could periodically accommodate a guest, this could be adapted. But it presumes legitimate competence is being offered, as word of mouth is a key marketing ingredient. And like the other viable ideas Dan mentioned, it takes time to build a reputation and requires careful organization around the logistics.

Dan two additional sources that can help. Website work away.info. On here you can find people all over the world that are looking for help. Sometimes you don’t get paid you work 15 to 20 hours a week in exchange for room and board. However if you need a place to hold up while you’re making repairs it’s an excellent way to meet locals and go see the area and have a hot shower freshwater and fresh food. Sometimes they will pay you I’ve seen jobs looking for contractors 80 people piano teachers English teachers hotel desk clerk’s wineries Olive Garden’s all kinds of work. The second one that’s excellent if you need a place to stay and a place to hold up and make repairs and rest. The website couchsurfing.com. Although it’s intended for people to sleep on couches spare bedrooms spare apartments etc. It’s also an excellent source of a way to find a place to park your vehicle in a safe and secure location. Most of those people if they will let you sleep on their couch will certainly let you park your vehicle there. Unfortunately couch surfing has put a small fee in effect now to be a member but it’s still well worth it if you’re traveling and need safe locations to park
