Glad to see you on youtube again! My favorite tip to increase your harvest is to ignore the spacing requirements on the seed packet. They are usually only appropriate for commercial growers. I loved your reminder to place trellises on the north end of your plot in the northern hemisphere. I have a small garden and big dreams and usually plant too many seeds for the space I have.

I am also always too optimistic about the available space - especially when browsing seed catalogues ;)

I increase my garlic yield by not letting it bulb up I Iharvest it like leeks and trim any yellowing foliage then blitz it in a blender and freeze it in bags. It also tastes milder when added to different dishes .

Great tip I've sometimes done this by accident, not harvesting all the bulbs :)

Ooh! I’m putting your book on my wishlist. I also wanted to let you know that I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made your butternut Bundt cake, Vera. It’s one of my favorite dessert recipes now.

Great to see that you have returned with advice for a new season. Our allotment in Oosterhout NB is set up this season for polycropping with each different crop family being given a block of 500mm x 400mm (on beds also 1200 wide). The plan is to have every block surrounded by plants from different plant families, with at least 4 families on each bed, so that the roots of different families mingle at the edge of each block or cluster. Some beds are for taller crops - with supports, others for covering against insect pests and the rest open. We hope you have a great season once today's low temperatures have passed

@@GrownToCook Thank you. Season planting delayed due to home isolation with Covid, but we plan to dodge the showers and catch up in the coming days. We will take photos as the beds develop

I'm very happy to see you again! I have your book and have read it again this winter. I tend to do that in anticipation of the new planting year. I always seem to learn something from your book and videos. For instance, I didn't know radish seed pods were not only edible but tasty. In my area our spring warms up quite quickly and some veggies don't really like the heat so much. So, this year I started very early, in February. Despite the sudden freezing temps we've experienced they seem to be doing fine and I 'm hoping for a better harvest then years past.

It's so lovely to hear you're rereading my book, Mel! Thank you!! I hope your plants will be alright (it got very cold here too and we're having snow today!) but plants are often tougher than we expect :)

Fijn je weer te zien Vera! In de winter en het begin van het nieuwe jaar heb ik regelmatig je boek "Tuin Smakelijk" weer in mn handen, blijft een heerlijk en leerzaam boek om te lezen! Tips on productivity? Presow some veggies, so you can plant them early, gives you an early harvest and then sooner space for another crop. Even combine your plantings 50/50 with some direct sowing and you'll spread your harvest as well. Groetjes weer! Debbie

Do you use living mulches in your raised beds? Do you recommend something for newly established raised beds, with probably heavy soil? Your business is planning gardens for customers?
@GrownToCook
@GrownToCook 2 жыл бұрын
I do not use living mulch myself, as I replant and resow my beds several times in a season I find it easiest to work with other (not-living) mulches. My best advice is to ad as much compost to new beds as you can get! I sometimes design edible gardens for customers but I am mainly a garden writer and teacher :)
