I think that as soon as your horse shows subtle lameness get xrays. You'll be glad you did, because you'll then know how to treat and work the horse correctly. That alone can give you more years with your horse. My 21 yr quarter horse with bone spurs on front lower left leg gets: Pentosan injections monthly, bute daily, equicox every other day, double dose of Dumoor hoof. Exercise/ turnout every day and regular shoeing 6-8 weeks. it's hard for him to keep his bad leg up for farrier so I give him a dose of dormasin under his tongue a hour before the farrier comes. It puts him in La-La land. I always try to keep his weight light and regular dental check and care. His galloping days are over, but we trail ride at least every other day. English close contact saddle and we neck rein because life is a compromise. Great Video...thanks for posting.

Best ever thing I've found to keep my gal comfortable is osphos injections. Alone with other regular maintenance

Do you ever use hands on massage; if so how and how often? My mare is a beautiful quarter horse and does really well all things considered. I do what you went over, but have a little massage on big muscle groups around joints…any suggestions?

I am not familiar with that treatment and have never had a horse with ringbone, so I couldn't help you too much with that. Probably a good question for the vet.

My pony has become so bad all of his back muscle is gone and he hasn’t picked up a trot in four months. I worry about getting on him. But we’re trying a new treatment so hopefully he will start to look more comfortable

I hear you, my old man has lost his top line this summer after coming out of winter looking so good. It’s very discouraging. Let me know how that treatment goes and what you’re doing. Getting ready to take mine down to FL for the winter at my parent’s farm. They’re going to give him a lot of extra TLC (and calories).

@@Ginnyshorseproductreview he’s started on a senior feed and I’m going to start putting him out for about 7 hours during the day and all night to keep him moving. We started adecuan and a pain killer. They’re coming back in a month to do x rays to role other stuff out but I’m almost positive it’s arthritis it’s pretty obvious. I feel so bad for my boy I wish I could take his pain away. He used to be a great athlete

I purchased a horse from my Ferrier (no longer speaking with him). When I purchased the 16 year old gelding, he seemed gimpy. My ferrier stated he needed shoes. My ferrier was a friend and I employed him for SIX years, so I trusted I was buying a sound ranch horse. New shoes did not relieve the symptoms... Fast forward... I had a chiropractor look at him (after many x-rays, exams, consultations) to determine my geldings ailment. She stated he has ligaments that seemed stringy, and he is bone on bone in the knee area. I feel this gelding crossed my path for a reason as he was obviously rode hard and not taken care of. Is there anything I can do with the “bone on bone” diagnosis? I recently started him on Adequan. It seems to help some what. Any suggestions for my situation? P.S. When I ride frequent, day 1 is choppy, day 2 better, day 3 and beyond his stride expands and he actually walks. What do you think??

Hi Mikalyn, sorry to hear about the difficulties with the farrier! It's so discouraging to have relationships like that tarnished and trust broken. I'm glad that this horse is in your care now though. He obviously needed your love and care in his life. They do come to us and cross our paths for a reason i believe too! Sorry to hear about the bone on bone diagnosis! Hoping the adequan helps out! I think it sounds encouraging that day three he his walking out better. I think walking is the BEST and most underrated exercise. Even Denny Emerson says that. That's how I got my old arthritic guy in great shape! Make sure your guy has plenty of room to move around during the day/night as well. If you feel like he may be too sore for a ride, take him for a walk in hand, or maybe walk in hand prior to a ride and see if that helps. Long straight lines, try not to do too many circles too. I ponied mine for months on really long trail rides and he got to feeling really good. Ultimately, you know your horse best. Listen to him. He'll tell you when he's feeling good and when he's feeling bad.

My 12 to 15 year old quarter horse was a pro barrel horse in till a couple years ago . My vet thinks he may have arthritis but isn’t quite sure because of how he acts . She said i may still be able to barrel race him but i dont want to hurt him . What are your options?

My number one piece of advice would be to listen to the horse. You know your horse better than anybody. If you think he is uncomfortable, he probably is. Trust your gut. Maybe give him some time off or light riding and then revisit to see if his heart is still in it or if maybe he’s dealing with some pain. They try so hard for us. The best we can do is listen. Even if he’s not comfortable enough go be a pro anymore, he might still enjoy a lighter semi-retired style career.

oh no, poor baby! I would recommend a talk with the vet and see if they can prescribe something like bute or previcox to pre-load the day before or a few days prior so the horse is comfortable enough to stand for trims.

Hey I have a question what was it like having to change things for your horse after learning about the arthritis?

Basically, you just have to listen to your horse and make sure they're comfortable. I know that my horse doesn't like steep climbs or deep sand, so I avoid trails like that. If I do run into those kinds of trails, I will get off and hike with him. Just take it slow to start and pay close attention to your horse's attitude. If they're getting grumpy, they're probably in pain. Definitely keep a close eye on soundness too, but in my experience, the first sign of discomfort is grumpy-ness or an uncharacteristic lack of impulsion.

sorry, but you need to get the horse to stop being lame before you can go back to fitness. that is achieved by supplements for joints and eventually bute until your horse stops being lame. Do not exercise your horse if he/she is lame. For me, supplements go first or second to support and help the joint take back it's proper abilities. I agree with all the rest. Good video

Victoria! I totally agree! No exercising lame horses!! This vid is for horses with mild arthritis and maybe some stiffness but not lameness, I had hoped that was clear in the video. For horses with mild arthritis, exercise (especially lots of walking) is very good for the joints! But don’t ask me, ask your vet. Any lameness should always be evaluated by the vet first, but lots of walking is good for horses where stiffness is caused by arthritis. Movement helps to lubricate joints. Obviously supplements are supportive, but only a few out there with actual peer reviewed research on efficacy. Sounds like you know what is working for your horses though! Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment, and I will try to clarify better in future vids that I am definitely not advocating actual work work for horses with lameness.

The Reevessss,excellent comment ! Why would someone think it is ok to display someone's skin and hair after murdering them ? Would they display a horse,dog,or cats skin ,if not why not ,what is the difference ? All are sentient beings !
