Island gardener here! High 80s, I have to start over entirely. Everything got hit with blight or mildew, shriveled in the heat, or just died upon germination. Hoping for a greener thumb this go around!

Shade cloth is a live saver. I cover all my transplants with it for at least 2 weeks. This way they have a better chance of establishing themselves before the dreaded sun.

Yes Texas where I live is scorching especially the last 2 weeks. Our humidity is terrible as well. We are getting a “cold front” tonight they said. Only supposed to be highs of 97-101 for the next 10 days. 🥵 they are not funny. My garden burned up a couple weeks ago and I’m not planting yet for fall. I’ll wait until mid September. Ditto!! I do container gardening in Houston. 2 weeks ago when I'd go outside, I was immediately sopping wet from the heat and humidity. I finally brought my containers inside to work on them! It was messy and dirt got everywhere, but at least I wasn't getting heatstroke trying to work on them.

Here in Southern California the temperatures have been over 100 degrees everyday the past few weeks. My tomato and pepper plants have been seriously suffering! So many blossoms have dropped and the temperatures don’t seem to be cooling down for the next few weeks

We actually put. Up a large portable shade tent without the sides during a bbad heat wave last spring when our peas and cruciferous were starting to melt. It ended up staying for 3 weeks so our seedings could take off. It worked and they are are great now. Now we have shade cloth over much of the garden for the next few days til the heat wave passes. First time in over 30 years we have had to protect from sun. Its usually the cold we deal with.

I tend to water my plants late in the evening and early in the morning And I grow almost only in containers, so I move them to a more shadow rich spot, and put dishes under the containers

Moving them doesn’t stress them? I grown mostly in Grow Sacks that are movable (have handles). Thanks for the tip. Didn’t want to stress out my food! ✌🏾

@@iamdjsluggo it can stress them out a lil bit, but you can basically say its similar to a tree that fell over causing more shadow, Except no tree fell over and the pot will be moved to a behind a tree or building 😂

I tell you what helped me! I used mychorrizal innoculant and I live in Houston where it gets to be 108. I forgot to water my basil for three days! They are all in pots. The ones treated with the innoculant didn’t suffer any effects. The other ones shriveled up and died! I really was truly amazed. I also like that shirt!

This is one of the reasons why I'm a big fan of food forest layers. You don't even need to have the canopy and it works really well.

My container garden was struggling, I was ready to pull out 50% of the plants. Then we finally got some deep long rain and the cucumbers in particular came back to life. The heat has passed here now and the mornings are cooler so Im getting ready to start some fall seedlings to get the most out of the next round of gardening.

Hi. If watering in morning, consider watering ground level. Water droplets on leaves will be glass magnifier n scald leaves. If you know your garden will growing mostly in summer, take small tall wax cartons, like holes in them n bury few in soil n plant around them. When hot weather moves in, unscrew cap in carton , fill with water, deep watering achieved. Peace to you and yours

Thanks for a relevant and realistic video, Kevin. You're spot on! We stretch 75% shade cloths across 7 -8 foot high (and about two inch thick) bamboo poles to make sort of an 18 x 18 foot canopy (the poles are spaced about 6 feet apart to make squares). That allows us to keep an eye on climbing vegetables such as cucumbers and beans. Don't worry about comments regarding long trousers and long sleeve shirts. We do the same for two reasons: it inhibits sunburn, and - in our parts of the world - it stops nasty bites from malaria- or dengue fever-carrying mosquitoes. We also wear wide-brimmed, and quite ugly straw coolie hats ;-)))). Keep up the good work. Stay safe and healthy, regards from tropical (i.e. hot and humid) Malaysia!

I converted to a RGGS system this year. Garden is doing great in the heat wave. I use shade cloth and umbrellas if I need to cover any plants. Even started some lettuce in the shade and it's doing ok.

A water timer irrigation setup goes a looooong way in keeping your crops watered properly. This is the first year that my bell peppers grew to near the size of the ones at the grocery store, and in a container no less. Happy gardening!

We have a bad drought and multiple heat waves here in Boston that have really taken its toll on my garden this year. I heard a fellow local gardener say they’ve never seen a drought this bad in the 20 years they’ve been gardening. Thankfully we got some rain today and the latest heatwave has broken. A lot of my plants have barely pulled through. I’m going to nurse them along this fall and hopefully they’ll recover and come up healthy next year.

Im in BC Canada. It's been 115F where I live which is hotter than normal and it hasn't been cooling down at night. My garden has been badly affected and ive lost about 50% of my plants. Ive only been able to save plants by moving them to my shade garden (which is small and packed right now). Shade is my friend right now. I can't wait for this to be over.

I already had a clothes line running above my garden bed, I draped a folded over row cover (after using a bed sheet for 2 weeks in a pinch) and tied the corners like a cheap tent canopy and it saved a lot of my tomato blossoms :D

I live in southern Arizona where the temperatures are over 100 degrees from mid-May through the end of September and I water late at night since I refuse to wake up at 5am when I go to bed at 3am. I use granular fertilizer twice a season and the container plants are happy. I have most of my plants in dappled shade since Arizona full sun will kill a lot of "full sun" plants. You can use bed sheets or burlap sacks as shade cloth as well. I never prune the foliage on my tomato plants because the fruit needs a lot of protection from the sun. Everyone here usually waters 2x a day, especially once we have sustained daily highs ranging from 105-115. Our wind is hot and dries out the plants very quickly, especially with the grow bags I use for everything. My current challenge is the daily 65 mph wind storms that are supposed to bring monsoon rain but haven't. We're in a severe drought, I've only gotten 1 inch of rain since March.

My garden has slowed wayyy down in production. I’ve had to pluck off a couple of tomato horn worms that were eating one of my prize cherry tomato plants. Even though it’s raining now, we have more hot weather coming our way. We just got through one tropical storm, had another form off the coast and Lord knows what will be next. Yesterday it was 102, but today is "only" 93. I'm in Northern California and are usually bone dry in summer but it rained last night and drizzled all through the morning. Usually, my problem is not getting enough sun in my garden, now I feel lucky to get getting as much shade as I do. Our normal August average temperature is 82 but we're projected to be in the 90s for the next week or more!

Southern Arizona has been so extra hot, and very little monsoon rains on top of it. My cucumbers have taken the worst of it! Beet leaves have been wilting no matter what I do.

Life long texan with incredibly pale skin. Covering your skin and wearing more clothes will help you in the heat as long as you are hydrated. The more you do the more you will see the benefits. My routine is to apply suncreen, or a lotion with good spf, everywhere early in the day and let dry. Then just basically wear light winter clothes. It protects from Sun damage as well as allows the sweat to cling to you better for cooling. You will stink, but your skin will be safe and it deters aging.

What we use out here in Nebraska, we use newspapers to lay between the rows. Four to five layers of newspaper and then you put your grass clippings on top. Water well when you first put them down, and then a deep soaking every morning. We would also give a "perk up" water on the ground, not on the leaves around 3pm to help cool the soil so the roots can stay viable. We also give a compost tea once a week during hot spells. It is low on the acid but helps to revive the soil without stressing the plants. This would also begin during the early morning watering.

We've had weeks and weeks of triple digit temps and absolutely no rain. I've been watering every morning and some evenings, but without rain, deer pressure has been tremendous. Even with an 8' poly deer fence surrounding our garden, some of the deer have been getting through/under the fence, breaking into our greenhouse and eating everything in sight inside and outside the greenhouse. I pulled probably 75% of my tomatoes this morning, because even though they were still trying to produce in this heat, the tomatoes were getting smaller and smaller and the deer were absolutely destroying them. I also took out my cucumbers out because they were turning yellow as they started to develop and the leaves were becoming a crispy mess. Along with the hot and dry, the lined cucumber beetles have been out in force - they love this weather. I also pulled my beans because they were crispy and struggling, and hadn't produced anything in several weeks. Since I have fall plants inside, I can allow the garden to lie fallow for a few weeks before I replant. It'll give me time to amend the soil and get some beneficial nematodes out there, too.

It gets hot in central WA where I live. Triple digits today and tomorrow. Last week as well. When it gets that hot, even in the 90s, I had to water sometimes twice a day. Here, not only is it hot, it is dry as well. I use a moisture meter and garden in fabric pots. Not much chance of root rot; but, the soil sure would dry out fast, even with mulch.

Our temps jumped 30 degrees in 8 hours so with my pre-heat deep water I added in some B vitamins for stress. Worked a treat. Only one multi-sown clump succumbed. Hope your temps come down some soon. 💚

I'm not an early riser(& my ac stopped!) so looks like my poor plants are going to be recycled as compost into another bed 🙄...good thing I have some in pots- but it's still sad! Hello from Canada! It gets super cold here... but just for a short time it gets super hot! My garden soil is black, not brown, not dark brown- blaaack. It absorbs heat terribly. The internal temperature of my soil can get uncomfortably hot. So, I let my weeds grow. Yes. My weeds protect my veggies and I carefully tend them, not allowing them to flower. It's a symbiotic system that works during my short growing season. Sorry if using weeds (mostly edible types like dandelion, porchulacca, sorrel, and plantain) bothers some. 😉😄👍❤

Was 109 yesterday in Duarte, zone 10b. Though I started nicely with my veggie garden, the heat and mosquitoes/biting bugs have made it less fun gardening since I am a walking buffet. Try to water in the AM and we also put up shade cloth. It's ugly but effective to have some shade for our plants.

Hi Kevin, Very good advice. Well, the heat has helped my crowder peas pop up through the soil in about 5 days. The heat also made many splits in my tomatoes. After the heat wave passes, if you have plants that are not rebounding and still look wilted......consider giving the plant either vitamin B-1 or vitamin B-52. This is what I use when my plants roots have gone thru heat stress or shock. 😃

I'm out here in Phoenix, AZ. We have had temperatures above 110 degrees for nearly 2 months now, and it had made growing anything outside pretty miserable. I have some potted herbs inside, as well as a small potted sugar pea. I have a weeping fig, Mediterranean Cypress, and a Meyer Lemon in containers outside and only the lemon has been thriving. The other two have been feeling the heat and struggling a bit, even with complete shade after 12pm. The struggle is real out here in the desert!

Central Coast of CA here - the Monterey Peninsula. When it gets over 75° we wither, so dealing with the heat is a GREAT video! We're not used to 87°+. Hope my tomatoes, squash, corn peppers, and strawberries 😁 Survive. The poor strawberries are not used to this weather. Watsonville, CA turns out strawberries for the whole country year-round, but not in these temps!

I'm panicking to prep for winter protecting against cold but thinking of you fighting the heat...Decades ago I was involved in greenhouse construction & we put hot water heating in the concrete floor of the starter greenhouse. This was on acreage in a nursery and mass production so it worked well for starting cuttings when the little heat mats would be not affordable on large scale. Keep thinking cold water circulation in those pipes in concrete or under tile floors would definitely help things chill

Over here we just had a massive heatwave of 8 days, with temps over 34 degrees Celsius every day. It didn’t hurt my garden as much as the drought and heat of March till may
