I think the logic is that someone who is broke has no money, so they would necessarily have to be tight with any money they obtain.

@@DylanYoshi Question was about a synonym for a person who is stingy, not about the situation and scrooge was a fantastic answer but apparently, the people who were surveyed were not that smart!
