Something about the Illumination adaption of the Lorax that’s always intrigued me is that, if you take a look at the film’s soundtrack, there’s this amazing unused demo called “Biggering” that’s essentially a much darker and grittier version of “How Bad Can I Be?”. It’s not a villain song so much as an exploration of the Once-ler’s personal reflections, self-awareness, and eventual sense of denial. All of the themes of the song culminate into a gorgeously dramatic climax that’s followed by an extremely haunting emptiness at the very end. I can’t help but wonder if that song is a glimpse of what might have been if the film hadn’t been oversimplified and commercialized so much.
@Orwin_Crossheart2 жыл бұрын
That's actually what "Biggering" is. Illumination's The Lorax was going to be darker and more faithful to the book. Then the execs went no, that's too scary for kids and won't sell and we got the version we got.

Maybe I'm just blocked with nostalgia, but The Lorax was one of my favorite movies. Sure, the environmental message only hit home in the third act, but I was entertained and bewildered by the wonderous story as a child. I adores the Lorax and everything that Audrey stood for. The last act had me at the edge of my seat and super emotional because of the music numbers. I felt as thought everybody was united in a way that is never usually pulled off. I must admit I did enjoy The Grinch but now that you mention Horton Hears a Who, it wasn't even close as good. Was a fun thing to watch with friends but I wouldn't watch it again and again. One thing I didn't like was the grinch's design, like you said he just looks like a dude that didn't drink coffee this morning. I think he looks too soft, but I assume it was an attempt from Illumation to make him more sympathetic?? Ok choice for marketing, not so good choice for an adaptation!
@yourcordialvermillionchapw23985 жыл бұрын
I mean look at the Grinch's teeth they are so pearly white and bugs just show up it doesn't mix well for me also. I think one of the favorites overall is the classic cartoon from Chuck Jones and I guess when I look back at it Jim Carrey actually did a great job, Sure it's uncanny (At most the Who's are scarier funnily enough.) But that's the thing with The Grinch he's supposed to look nasty/terrifying I mean that smile never ceases to creep me out its literally how the Grinch would look in reality and I love it actually though the Who's could need ADJUSTMENTS nevertheless Jim's expressive exaggerated movements did make him have more life to the character... And now he's playing freaking Dr. Robotnik, A.K.A The Eggman! xD Do you remember his puppet version that I think Jim Henson made?

One of the interesting things about the Secret of NIMH (1982) is all the fantastic and magical aspects of the film are entirely limited to the film itself. The original book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, was almost 100% strictly a hard science-fiction book (the lone fantasy element being the animals' ability to talk to each other, think like humans, and, of course, the rats' gaining of human-level intelligence, concept of morality, and lifestyle). A curious fact about the book is that it was directly inspired by John B. Calhoun's Experiment 25, the "Rat Utopia", which demonstrated the Behavioral Sink phenomenon of both social animal societies and human civilizations.

The sad part about Lorax 2012 is, it *had* potential. There were *like one or two* things that it did exceptionally well. For example, I really liked how it didn't make the Once-ler evil and greedy right away; he was a reasonable, careful guy perfectly willing to cooperate starting out, just like we all think we'd be if we were in his place, only to steadily start succumbing to external pressure, like we all think we're too strong for, until he eventually slips into the irredeemable, like we all think couldn't possibly happen to us but, if we don't watch our backs, very much could. That's how *most* evil corporations start. Hardly anybody sets out *wanting* to crush everyone else under their heels from day one, and those that do don't get far enough to be able to do real damage like those who think they're justifiable. I mean, that could have been a _very powerful message_ that could have very much _enhanced_ the book's original message if they gave a single damn about the book's original message. But there's just way, way too much wrong dragging anything right down.
@poweroffriendship2.05 жыл бұрын
That would be too perfect for an adaptation. The Lorax shows that evil corporation destroys everything just for the sake of green piece of paper. And that message reflects Illumination Studios. Making predictable storylines for money while getting your audience tortured can be meaningful. If the studio gets a chance to make better stories and not the average ones, the Illumination Studios could be a great studio.
@Obsessor235 жыл бұрын
@@poweroffriendship2.0 Problem is that that's basically Illumination's MO, and has been for a while; make a movie with minimal funds, make it very inoffensive and safe, but eye-catching enough to fill theater seats, in order to maximize profit. They have all the chance in the world to make good films, they're just content making so-so ones.
@poweroffriendship2.05 жыл бұрын
@@Obsessor23 That kinda explains everything because Illuminations Studio was afraid to discuss any interesting topics about real struggles, making some dark atmosphere, and make some hidden adult jokes that kids won't understand. If the studio was like that, it will be more different studio than what we got now. You know? Kids movies are like utopia, it means nowhere, because they don't experience any sufferings and make something that are "safe" for the people. But the "safety" is just a part of survival instead of the living. No self awareness needed.

The How to Train Your Dragon films may be loved by around 90% of the world’s population, but they are nothing compared to the books. So many of the plot points and characters in the books were dumbed down, messed up or eradicated completely. While I think the films are good as their own separate franchise, I read the books first and I just can’t stop thinking about how Dreamworks virtually ignored the source material for them. They are pretty much a separate franchise in their own right, and only bear a passing resemblance to the books.

Nicole Dorrian True, ar least with The Grinch, as painfully harmless as it is, has its heart in the right place and could sometimes gove me the feels. While with The Boss Baby, it's quite possibly DreamWorks Animation's worst work since the movie they made before in late '16 because not only does it have its moments of feeling like Illumination and Sony Animation levels of traumatizingly inoffensive, it could even be too mean-spirited with the dynamic between the two protagonist brothers (let alone Tim Templeton during the airport call scene where he belittled and verbally assaulted Theodore Templeton aka Boss Baby).
