Bane challenges Both of Batman's greatest strengths, his fighting ability, and intelligence. He is imposing both physically and mentally to Batman, and when he has time to plan he is nearly unstoppable.

Most of the best rogues gallery members personify some concept. False justice, egotism, fear, chaos Bane is dominance. Physical, mental, all of it. He was a character specifically created to kill Batman. A character whose defining feature is dominance would never allow themselves to become the lackey of a supervillain, he’s more likely to punch them in the face and take over That’s part of the issue I have with “more accurate” depictions such as the Origins, Telltale, etc. If Bane is in Gotham, Bruce’s days are numbered. They can’t coexist in the same city unless he’s locked tight in Arkham. Bane returning should shake everything up, he’s not like the Joker who’d just mill around killing people. He’d not stop until Batsy was dead

I think their designs work well in the world they are in. For the most part. We'll get to that. Sometimes the character design in this franchise works really well as silent world building, which is nice to see. Zsasz and Poison Ivy's outfits are bits and pieces of prison uniforms, and Scarecrow had that in common with them. The scrappiness of the universe is played up really well in this universe, so it can be forgiven for Jonathan Crane to wear prison clothes. The noose works because it connects it to any BTAS Scarecrow design. There's so many BTAS alumnus here, why run away from further connections? Gordon looks fine. Not the best, but he not really worth commenting on. He's a regular human male so he shouldn't have so much design flare. Killer Croc works well, too. His disorder accelerates through the franchise from brawler to barely human monster to full crocodilian-human hybrid. His design in Knight works for me because I see his hulking, spikey giant form as something that's meant to garner sympathy from the audience. Waylon Jones was illegally tested on the stress he endured pushed his disorder further and further. Batman heaps more shit on the doctor that made Croc worse than Croc for eating and killing people. Bane works for a similar reason. He was taken advantage of. His ability to withstand pain and undergo the Venom procedure made him a prime target for the Titan trials. When we first see him in Asylum, he's basically a skeleton, but grows abnormally large, presumably from Titan intake after being weaned off his enhancements for who knows how long. He's an addict who was taken advantage of. "We can, but should we?" Is what Dr Young refused to ask before destroying a patient's rehabilitation. Titan Joker just fuckin sucks bro. I don't have a defence for that. If the list was just Titan Joker for each spot on the list, I'd be perfectly fine with that. Personally, I think Deadshot sucks in terms of character design. It looks really boring and downplayed. Hugo Strange could have gifted him full garb quite easily, but instead he piecemeals a costume from stuff in the closet and it really sucks. All in all, I do think you're both right. None of the designs in AA, AC, AO or AK suck entirely, some are just less good than they could have been. Except Titan Joker. Boy that sucked.

Could’ve been an honourable mention for Bruce’s face in Knight. I think in general Arkham could’ve got his face a bit better. Less chiseled and more of a thin face, similar to Christian Bale’s head shape would’ve been perfect. But the one they went with wasn’t even bad, just in Knight we saw Bruce’s face a lot more than usual and it looked more on the ugly side which I hated. The whole identity theft mission makes no sense in this case, why would Elliott make himself so ugly.

I understand how in Arkham Asylum the characters looked a little “Cartoony” and “Quirky” but remember Rocksteady was still experimenting with the character design they didn’t expect The Arkham series to grow and become so popular. As Rocksteady grew so did the characters and designs they’ve all evolved and become more withered over time it makes sense too.

I agree with Gordon. He definitely looked better in Origins and Knight than he did in Asylum and City. Titan Joker? Eh, it was what it was. I find it stupid that his hairstyle magically changed. Scarecrow, I agree that he looks better in Knight but this wasn't bad. I actually liked Croc's design in Knight. While I do think he looks way more intimidating in Asylum and City (heck, even Origins) because he still has those human elements that make him more unsettling whereas in Knight, he looks completely animalistic and despite still being an eleven feet tall being with super strength, razor sharp teeth and hardened skin, looks far less scary In my opinion, it works. Croc is presented in a far more sympathetic light in Knight than he was before. He's been tortured and mutilated by Warden Ranken. He's not a monster anymore. He's gotten so big that he can't even run on two legs. He's a shell of what he once was. And again, I think it works. And yeah, Bane in Asylum and City looks horrible. City improved the design slightly since his skin actually looks like skin, but I, like most, don't like the look.

While his design is cool but if Scarecrow is supposed to like represent Batman's fear I think the fear induced visions or hallucinations I thought he could've looked more menacing kinda like in Knight where there this bonus level or whatever where Scarecrow looks more demonic, more nightmare fueled than the doctor look in the fear toxin induced hallucinations in Arkham Asylum. I get it's hard to make a character design especially since in Asylum the game was made in 2009 I think.

I actually agree with you guys on 2 out of 5 of these: Killer Croc in Knight and Scarecrow in Asylum. The other 3 are actually among my favorites in contrast. Scarecrow in Asylum was scary and I can see where you’re going with the logic that he put together the outfit. In my opinion, that’s the saving grace of his design, but the fact that the outfit is designed to show as much skin as it does also kinda ruins Scarecrow’s theme of being, well, a scarecrow-looking maniac. If it wasn’t for the fear gas and the fact that his dialogue was labeled Scarecrow, I honestly wouldn’t have figured out that’s who he was supposed to be. As for Bane, I honestly can see your point there too, BUT we have to remember that he was taken from Blackgate, experimented on, had his venom drained, and then injected with Titan-infused Venom which makes you go animalistic. He was probably too exhausted and too out of control to show much personality. Titan is in the background throughout all the games, changing nobodies into somebody fearsome (the Joker mutants and the Titan henchman) and bringing people who were already somebody to their knees (Dr. Young creating it, Bane becoming insane with it, Joker dying from its poisoning, etc.)

My top 5 worst character designs : 1) Bruce Wayne in Arkham Knight- I dont know what the hell they were thinking with that inbred piece of garbage looking design . (batman had an oddly skinny head in this game,but the suit was cool) 2) Default Batman suits in Arkham Asylum and City - I dont mind the underwear outside the suit,but batman just looked goofy in these games because of that. Also the ears were WAYYYY too long. To me, Rocksteady's Bane was like Bane from Batman & Robin, which was just as terrible. Just a big, dumb brute that was made from pumping venom into this tiny skinny dude. It's an insult to the character honestly. The fact that Origins absolutely nailed Bane makes it even more of a tragic mistake on Rocksteady's part because there's nothing they could do to fix him from after City. At least Origins had the decency to give an explanation as to why he lost all his intelligence, but still, it's a shame that Rocksteady failed on one of the bigger rogues from Batman.

I think the Knight design for Riddler was very poorly done. Origins was okay for a pre-Riddler Engima, but Knight just made him look like he just threw on an old t-shirt and called it a day.

So Bane looked pretty awful in Asylum and City. Deadshot looked pretty bad in City too. Croc's Knight look goes back to what you were saying with Scarecrow, though: It makes sense in terms of the story. By that point, Croc has spent years in Iron Heights being tortured and experimented on, so not only is he mutating as a result of that, he's also not getting any exercise.

The Bane from Tim Burton's Batman and Robin looks better than the Asylum one imo. I'd love to see more Bane designs like 2004's The Batman tho, where he's a ninja normally and a Brute with venom. Also joker becomes venomized in that series, and it looks a bit better than Asylum's Titan Joker

This is my list for sure, can’t decide on a 5th one I really dislike enough to include. Riddler: I know riddler is a goofy character to begin with, and honestly he’s pretty lucky as a character that he hasn’t been left in the dust with the modernization of superhero characters, I think they could’ve made his character cooler in Arkham considering he plays a role in every single game. Even something simple, like just giving him a solid green 3 piece suit like Mr. Green in clue and the question mark cane from Batman forever. They always do him dirty with overly question mark designed lame ass clothes. And they don’t actually respect him enough to make his riddles life threatening. Rather than relegating him to the trophy hunts which yes are difficult but have no stakes, make him intimidating by actually having the character have to beat a really challenging riddle to progress the game and having the player lose over and over. Maybe part of the game design could be making it impossible to beat it for several attempts intentionally to piss the player off, and so they feel like they’re guessing the wrong answer. Joker (Asylum): this is probably a hot take, but I don’t love how they designed Joker at all. I honestly would’ve much preferred a direct recreation of TAS jokers look, I think he actually looks more real in the show than in the games. His face is way too angular and huge, and it looks kind of ridiculous. Idk why they made him rail thin, Joker has never been a physical menace or threat to Batman, but he’s physically average not emaciated. And they made his hands really big compared to his super skinny body and it looks so odd. And his suit looks really dumb honestly I just kind of hate how they designed him lol for such a pivotal and iconic character, every other design of him looks better than the rocksteady games IMO. Bane: Obviously you hit the nail on the head with this, they did bane so dirty in the rocksteady games. Mostly in his development, but that bleeds over into his physicality as a byproduct. The fact his body isn’t proportional drives me crazy, I love how origins bane is all around a huge guy, asylum bane has tiny legs, and insanely huge shoulders and forearms that makes him look ridiculous. This is nit picky but why is he barefoot? I feel like bane would wear some boots or something rather than walking around barefoot like a hobo. Just doesn’t fit him. Even the Batman and Robin Bane wore shoes. And as a character, he’s awful. They made his boss fight a joke. Banes entrance into the Batman universe was showing up in Gotham and kicking killer crocs ass to prove he’s the strongest villain in Gotham. Arkham croc would destroy Arkham bane no contest. The little closet you “trap” Bane in in city is so humiliating and just totally neuters the character. He’s so pathetically weak in those games physically for being such a hulking character. Croc busts through that multi layer brick wall in the subway in City, while Bane can’t even break out of a little sliding chain link door storage closet. So ridiculous. Killer Croc (Arkham Knight): I always hated this design and thought I was in the minority. I think the argument for the trauma from the experimentation making him look like that is lame, because he’s not even scary looking. I’m all for making him less human as his condition exacerbates, but he doesn’t look like a crocodile in that game he looks like the Iguana from the spider man 3 game. He was such a more menacing character in the other 3 games that his knight incarnation was just a joke. And honestly, Batman and nightwing shouldn’t be able to just take him down with punches and kicks. Batman should be forced to drop a ceiling on him or something to stop him in the boss fight. I think it’s ridiculous that Batman can punch a 3,000 pound crocodile monster that can bench 2,000 pounds into submission.

Bane’s characterisation is poor but his design is incredibly accurate minus the blacked out vest and trousers which would make sense being locked up in a orange jumpsuit making his trousers orange.

Know I’m late here guys, but I personally like Bane’s design in Asylum/City, granted he isn’t as tactical as he should be and is more of a Hulk type I still think it looks cool and reminds of of the Regime Bane from Injustice.

I’ve never been a fan of batman himself’s design in these games, especially not the borderline iron man like armoured ones later on. luckily I guess there’s alternative suits.

Its funny, I didnt really care about what Bane looked like in Asylum or City until I played Origins. That interpretation of him was my favourite one (before he got juiced up on Venom toward the end of the game)

Okey, regarding Scarecrow in Asylum,I kinda like it, and I get that you're not saying it's bad per se ofcourse but yeah, shirtless: meant to show how skinny/"sickly" he is. The noose: goes with his design in B:TAS. The mask: eh, yeah I'm kinda with you, I mean I like the concept, but the way it stretches and moves with his face makes it seem more like a part of him than a mask, and maybe that's semi good on a level, but I'm not sure that's the best way to have it in this game.

These scarecrow critiques are so confusing to me to me LMAO, The noose is a staple in scarecrow designs, so to ask what the point is makes zero sense. I think the two reasons why everyone likes the scarecrow design so much is obvious, number one the way they designed his mask is incredibly cool, it actually looks creepy and the texture of the mask could almost be mistaken for actual skin. That paired with a unique choice to put gas mass containers on both sides of his mouth makes this an iconic mask for the character. And then the second reason why this asylum design is so iconic is obviously because of the Groundbreaking choice to put the syringe needles on his fingers as a glove, which is obviously a call back to the other master of fear: Freddy Krueger. for a lot of people when they were younger and this game came out scarecrows glove was the most memorable part of all the designs in the game. I get that it’s a little weird that he’s shirtless, and from the neck down maybe they could’ve done a better job with his asylum costume. But his mask/hood-noose, And his syringe glove, are both so good that he deserves to be in the top five best designs of the game.

Also this notion that character designs or two cartoonish is ridiculous, not inherently, but specifically in the context of this game. Every character design in the game when it comes to super characters is overly cartoonish. There’s not a single character that is not exaggerated proportional wise, it’s meant to be a dark gritty look at the animated series. So Batman‘s body is incredibly unrealistic, the same can be said for jokers body and face, killer crocs height and body, every female in the game is unrealistically proportioned, but similar to the animated series not exaggerated or distorted, it’s only with men who are distorted, every thug is incredibly jacked, every single character in this video game is unrealistically proportioned. So to say that scarecrows proportions are oddly unrealistic, is a ridiculous statement. It’s clearly the style of the game, Bruce Tim drawings come to life

It's explained perfectly why Croc looks so weird and messy in knight. It's because they are performing such horrific experiment on him. Sure, it's whacky. Sure it's cartoony. But it's a comic book character who is like half man and half crocodile. How else could he look other than whacky? In the setting, in this universe, and given the explanation the game gives, he looks just about right. Maybe a point about the big belly, but then again he's spent his entire time in there chained in one position, so he's getting fed but not working it off. They cut off his hand/paw for fuck sake. To see if he would grow it back. And it explains that the more pain and stress they put him through, the more severe injuries they gave him, the more he was mutating into something that was a really mutated and freaked out version of a were-croc. Makes perfect sense when given context, and when you bear in mind that this is a character from a comic book where a clown is the main villain, who has a harley quinn-dressed girlfriend, and there is a woman who has plants growing in her flesh and can "talk to" all kinds of plants, trees and vegetables. In a universe where all these things happen, is it such a stretch that Croc would be so fucked up, especially when it's explained in the game WHY he's so fucked up looking? Give him a break. And Gordon looked fine to me in all the games. In Asylum he was big, pretty muscle-bound, grizzled-looking, but somewhat aged and world-weary and wise. He looked perfectly capable to me. Especially in Asylum.
