@@weemsmotorco Ah, the good old UK, land of the Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. We do still have some nice sounding Royal Enfields around though (there is a beautiful red one next door), made in India! And the new BSA Gold Star does look beautiful... made in ???? Yep- India! I actually lived less than half a mile from the old BSA building in Selly Oak/Bournbrook, Birmingham, though I think they only made Ariel motorcycles there after taking over Ariel and Triumph in 1951. BSA left it in 62 when I think Birmingham Uni took the building over. It's looking like it's long gone now on Google Earth (thank you, wiki!).🙂

The one thing I have to say is that the Brits made the most gorgeous looking bikes way back when! The thing that catches the eye is that, BSA tank badge adorning that beautiful tank! I say the same thing with Triumphs. Never ridden a BSA or really seen one in good condition, but that guy has a beauty on his hands, As with any model or year bike, you gotta stay on top of things and not cut corners on maintenance and replacing parts. Loved seeing this old BSA and everything you did on it. You're an amazing moto guy Weems! Keep wrenching and riding those old British bikes and please stay safe!

This family of engines was designed before WW2 when things like oil tightness were not serious considerations. BSA only used a felt washer behind the clutch, so the primary cover was never intended to be fully oil tight. The gearbox is an ancient design using permanently meshed gears and sliding dogs. When working properly the gear change requires a firm, slow push or lift. The 8 inch front brake was, I think, fitted for sidecar use to give extra stopping power. Hepolite is a now a trademark of Wassell Ltd a very longstanding aftermarket parts supplier (they have even marketed complete motorcycles). Most of their catalogue is of parts made by different suppliers, traditionally from around the Birmingham area. The wrongly assembled oil pump I would ascribe to Wassell's subcontracting supplier.

I had an old friend who rode a slightly later version, I think a 1957 right around Australia in 1959. Through outback Queensland, the Northern Territory, mainly dirt roads for about half. Across the Nullarbor plain. I gave him some cheek and said BSA meant the bastard stops anywhere. He frowned and said "Bullshit. One of my mates was a factory mechanic, we set it up right and it never missed a beat." Given the distance, 15 000 km or a bit over 9 000 miles it was an amazing feat of will and endurance. Old "Harvey" is long gone, but this was the reason I watched the clip. Thank you.

As the former owner of a 1968 BSA A65S Spitfire, I was always told that BSA stood for "bastard stopped again". It seemed to fit. I noticed those timing cover screws were all buggered up. If replacements are not available, I always take a Dremel and grind all the burs off them. I just hate chewed up fasteners. Considering all the stuff you found wrong, there are probably a ton of other things wrong in the engine and transmission, and it probably won't run very long until something really serious happens. It needs to be torn down and completely rebuilt.

When i was 17 I saw an old BSA B33 in someones garden looking pretty neglected with flat tyres and ivy growing through the spokes. I knocked on the door and after a bit of haggling she was mine. I pushed her across the road to a garage and pumped up her flat tyres and put some petrol in. I then cleaned the spark plug to see if I had a spark and I did, luckily ! Before kicking her over I squirted some Redx in to the carburettor and after a couple of kicks she burst into life. But because of the Redx she smokes like a train so I jumped on her and roared off down the road leaving a trail of blue smoke which soon cleared. I must say, that old bike was as tough as old boots and always started whatever weather, she just refused to die. Once I went to my local town and it was flooded and the water came right up just below the carburetor so I turned her off as I didnt want to suck water into the engine. I pushed her back through the flooding until i was on higher ground and took off the magneto cover letting all the water out. I then cleaned the points with a bit of dry card and put it back together, after a couple of kicks she fired up and I was off again. When I stopped at the cross roads crossing the hill out of town I noticed there was still lots of water pouring out from the primary case, but that old bike just kept on going. No wonder the British Army bought so many, they were indistructable . 👍😁

I used to ride an old BSA B31 sprung frame as my daily transport in the UK in the 1970s. A rusty wreck fettled by my older brother. I loved it because the it was so much lighter than the later swinging arm models. Only problem was kidney damage on rough roads. I remember attending an auction at the time, after a local character died. He was a common sight riding around on old BSAs. All converted to hand change because he only had one leg. All of his auction bikes were Frankenstein beasts. Twin motors in single frames. Push rod motors in side valve frames, with extra pipes brazed on the side valve oil tanks etc. All with fake frame numbers stamped on the frames with the wrong typeface. The Auction descriptions were all wrong, written by their "expert" PS: The best upgrade to my B31 was the fitting of Gold Star cams. It really made a difference.

One more thing .. when you live in the UK and buy an American bike its cost a fortune in parts and more for labour because Harleys are repaired by Harley specialists and they are few in numbers .. never buy with your heart use your brains "Caveat emptor" All the best to you from Gordon in the UK

I was very pleased to see this video as I have a 1954 model year M33! I was interested to see the regulator on the M33 in the video tucked in next to the battery as it is on my bike; I've always thought it was just something a previous owner had done. My six spring clutch was worn out so I just installed a brand new four spring clutch; there's a kit available in the UK which bolts straight on and it didn't cost much more than all the bits I needed for the old clutch. There's not supposed to be a ball bearing on the end of the clutch pushrod. I couldn't see for sure, but the clutch actuating arm didn't seem to be at quite the right angle, it looked to be at 90 degrees to the cable before the handlebar clutch lever was pulled in. If so, just a matter of moving it round on the splines. That's how my M33 came so I knew to look out for it. The change on that gearbox isn't brilliant, but I just take my time and wait until the drive is taken up before letting the gear lever return.

The oil tank should have a gauze/ felt filter over that return pipe. Mine has, had it out yesterday as it’s wet sumped and I need to get the oil back into the tank. Good luck to you.

The M-series had that felt filter, other bsa singles from the same era, like B31, B33 did not.. it is a nice feature, but without it, i can still be a durable setup.. as for your (or others) wetsumping concerned, oil pump is worn… hepolite makes and sell new ones through a dealer network, we fit these regularly and the wetsumping issue is adressed the proper way..

A great looking bike, just such a shame it had a bodger working on it. Good to see your attention to detail in your work, though I love your optimism in curing the oil leaks! In the late 60s in the UK you could ride bikes at 16 and my first was a BSA D7 Bantam. I went to look at a 350cc BSA B31 when I'd passed my test but it felt huge to me and a bit old fashioned, so, to my later in life eternal regret, I never bought it but got a 350cc Triumph 3TA instead, probably the second love of my motorcycling days (the first love, even if only a D7, is still special). My only negative comment is that the B is BSA is pronounced Birmingham, not Birmingham! 👍🙂

Nice bike!!! I wanted to ask about a particular motorcycle!! I looked at several 1972 ,73,74 triumph tridents ( buddy had a 72 triumph trident back in the mid to late 90s and I rode it for a hour on farm market roads and through a big park on the paved roads!!! Ride it easy and probably got her up to 55 mph a few times!!! Had a great time and it ran good, shifted good!!! Big D triumph worked on it before and they even restore Vincent's, BSA , excelsior Henderson and are fantastic!! DALLAS Texas!!! Years later big D had a 1976 triumph Bonneville for 7 ,ooo and they restored it 15 years ago and the owner had put 5000 miles on it in 15 years!!! I didn't buy it!!! I wanted a Trident!!! I'm not a motorcycle mechanic but I can do maintenance and small repair to my Harleys but between a Bonnie and the Trident I'm thinking the Trident may be more complicated to work on over a long ownership!!!!?

Interesting video, Haven't ridden a B33 since the mid sixties. Remember it as a decent bike. I once had a B34 Clubman, hated it. Poor handling, hard to start. Now have two B44VS and a B40WD for dirt roads. With four featherbed Nortons for track and paved roads, sadly time for riding the BSAs is limited.

There's a lot of people that try to second - guess BSA engineering, but they are probably way beyond their pay-grade on that one.If you have a splined gearbox mainshaft, a Norton three spring clutch fits right in, and is about the finest clutch that ever there was, with the exception of the enclosed BSA plunger Flash six spring item, obviously...

I'll take a squint in the parts book, but if you have a Norton Commando clutch centre, use that to check, as the splines are the same as the earlier AMC/ Norton clutches...If it's a tapered end mainshaft, then you can use a four spring Triumph item with a suitable adaptor. They are made over here... @@weemsmotorco

Bang on advice, bought a "Restored" Kawasaki 500 a couple of years ago, fortune spent by someone and another 5 yarder, luckily the engine had been done by a reputable firm, but then the whole thing looked to have been assembled by an angry chimp, so many things wrong, some dangerously so, I would advise buying from folks who have owned and loved and run their stuff, not trailer queens where someone has paid for all sorts of work, but probably never even rode it! Just a single example and a detail but you get the drift......the sidepanels are steel and newly resprayed, the badges diecast with pins that star washers press over....nope, the "builder" had peened over the pins with a hammer, damaging the previously good badges, and than lathered the mess in epoxy.........WTAF!

Nice video well done. When buying a 'restored old motorcycle', maybe ask for a copy of the workshop manual. If they can't supply it then they probably don't have one to copy. That may mean they restored the thing with a whole heap of guesswork. That said the factory workshop manual that I used for my 1954 B33 showed an upside down photograph of the crankshaft pinion and geared cam lobes timing marks. So to get the timing marks to line up you have turn the page upside down.

Great seeing you work on a nice old bike, thanks. Pity it was not assembled correctly in the restore. I wonder why if the oil pump is not working would it smoke? Does the oil get caught up above the cylinder and seep down? Dad had a "worked" Gold Flash (I guess that was a Golden Flash) back in the fifties and he rode it wearing a nice sheepskin flying jacket. He strongly kept me away from motorcycles until 18 or so. I eventually found out it was because he lost most of his mates on those old bikes, square fours etc. It didn't stop me getting his old 200cc two-stroke Villiers bush bike out, pushing it up our steep driveway and bump starting it when it wouldn't kick start, riding it and working on it from about 7 years old! :)

When they wet sump from oil making it's way around a bad oil pump, the oil in the sump slings onto the skirt of the piston and cylinder that causes the bike to smoke.

@@weemsmotorco OK. thank you. Wouldn't the rings take care of that? Or is there just too much oil for the rings to cope with? Do they run a reasonably loose ring to cylinder clearance? I don't have an old bike, just interested :)

Really interesting and useful - I bought a 1952 BSA B33 in similar circumstances, restored but not ridden and sorted, and had v similar problems. One question - my clutch rod does not have a ball bearing and I have been told by more experienced B33 owners that that is correct - the rod just has hardened ends. Is this right? Plenty of B33 owners here in the UK, but they all have their own opinions...

That's a really pretty bike. Not sure how I feel about a concentric carb on a 1954 BSA. It should be monobloc or pre monobloc, right? I can't really complain, I have a concentric on my 64 Triumph TR6, even though it came with a monobloc. Concentric is a good carb. I hope you notified whoever sold you that oil pump and let them know it wasn't assembled correctly. They need to do better quality control. Not everyone knows exactly how it's supposed to look...and it bad news if you install it and it doesn't work right.
