the easiest way for me to open pomegranates is to cut off the top of the pomegranate &then create slices along the white parts, its usually about 4-5 slices on the fruit, this just makes breaking the fruit apart &having easier access to the seeds. I find it a lot easier to take the seeds out in water, that way all the white thingies just float to the top. I'm just starting to get in to gardening &we've had our pomegranate tree for like 6+ years now. I've noticed that it doesn't taste the same anymore and is starting to get more tangy. Would you happen to know the reason for this?

You should mention that the tree is a bit thorny and pruning should me done with care. Other than that I would reduce watering before the ripening of the fruit to avoid cracking. In Israel where I live, as in other parts of the middle east and Africa, we have a pest called Deudorix livia- a butterfly that lays eggs in the fruit and ruins it; we need to cover the fruits with paper bags to prevent it if we don't want to spray. You guys in California are lucky.

Nancy, California doesn't have the abundance of insects like Florida, or the humid east coast, in general. I grew up in New Jersey, "the garden state". Now in sunny San Diego for over 31 years. The drier climate isn't as bug friendly as back east with the dreadful humidity.

He didn’t say that you couldn’t grow them from seeds, he just said that he wouldn’t suggest it because you never know what kind of fruit (pomegranate)you’re going to end up with. Meaning, growers will pollinate different varieties together to end up with a certain variety that perhaps produces larger fruit or sweeter fruit. He has the variety called Wonderful. If he were to grow fruit from that plant he would not get the same pomegranate as Wonderful

Hi Zay, Its year five now. I transferred them from seed trays to individual small pots about four months. They are repotted once every year in slightly larger pots and prune them at the same time to reduce them getting bush like, the trunks are still just pencil thick. Growing from seeds is a very slow process and takes many years.

Don't waste so much time removing each pearl with your hands. Just cut it into two halves, take a mallet or something similar and keep knocking it on the convex outer side until all the pearls fall into a cup. This way you can remove all the pearls from many pomegranates in a very short time (few minutes).

Awesome! Good to know! Yes pomegranates do not need a pollinator, one plant is good enough!

It appears like there is a wire mesh around or behind the tree for branch support or pest control? Is branch support necessary or covering for protection against birds & Squirrels? Thank you! This was very informative.

Beautiful fruits. I acquired a Tunisia pomegranate with thin skin and soft edible seeds and in just six months the five foot tree already is flowering. Can't wait to see my tree as beautiful as this one.

In order to encourage fruit set, stop watering the pomegranate tree for a while when the flowers appear until you see small fruits being formed. If you water/overwater during the appearance of the flowers, they will just fall off.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have a customer who has a pomegranate tree in her backyard that's a mess. Your video is the best all around informative video I've seen in my research to "fix" her tree down here in San Diego. Again, thank you and keep up the good work!

The best way I've found to open pomegranates was actually on a box of them I got from Costco. First you score a ring about 1 inch down from the flower end of the fruit. Next, peel up the edges of the ring you just scored to take the flower end off. This will allow you to see where the membranes separate the clusters of seeds. Then just score down the sides of the pomegranate along those membranes and you can easily break apart the clusters.
