People don't need less or more: They need enough. Enough for what is the important question. This guy doesn't have a place to go to the bathroom or even to stand up if it is raining outside. He can't escape living near cities because there is no room for food and water in his van. If he is anxious and it's raining outside he doesn't even have the space to stand up and take a few steps. In a climate where the temperatures get very hot or very cold this would not be viable. People saying that a good life can be had in a Honda Element or an SUV are wrong. A life better than in a homeless tent camp can be had but that is setting the bar lower than most people know. We only get one life in all of forever to live. For me (and I think everyone needing to live in a vehicle) it is worth sacrificing and saving for perhaps two more years to be able to spend that precious time in a vehicle that has enough space and resources to live a good life, not just a life.

I spent 4 years full-time van living. I was in rented accommodation after a split with my wife. I had two dogs and after having to take them in. I was forced to either get rid of them or get evicted. It's so difficult finding private accommodation that accepts pets. So I purchased an old LDV mini bus and converted it into a camper. I was self employment and worked all the time. Like you I had no shower. But a gym membership was the solution. I lived and worked in North Birmingham (Kingstanding Great Barr Sutton Coldfield) Absolutely loved it. Barr Beacon and Sutton Park were my "garden". Never felt so free.

Doodle Pete you’re the perfect man 😂 I started like everyone else in a house, for 44 years, then lived in a caravan travelling the UK, lived in a narrow boat, went back to bricks n mortar, then lived in a van, and now back in bricks n mortar because of financial and mental health issues. I’m an artist when my head lets me. I love your van, I’ve recently been wanting to get out there again because all the “stuff” of normal life is getting me down again. It doesn’t bring happiness, just more on your shoulders. When I get sorted financially I’ll be converting another van, my fourth own conversion, then I’ll be off again. Maybe see you out there. Keep on going, don’t be fooled into property again, it’s a trap! x
@ln5747

Property is not a trap for everyone. It's a place to live, just like a van is for some. If people feel they are getting value from their house/home in exchange for the effort of work/investment of money then it's not a trap.

Pete's completely right. In Belgium, it's the same, you also have to WORK HARD, PAY YOUR TAXES AND SHUT UP! On top of that, you preferably have to live in a house so that they can find you if there's something wrong!
@Woketard
@Woketard 11 ай бұрын
Society shifting further Left results in higher taxes. For example, churches used to supply the populous with education, healthcare, housing and food. Now that the West has turned their back on their Christian roots, they turned to big government (i.e. the Nordic model) to "replace" what they vowed to destroy. The secularists have nothing to complain about since THEY fought and voted for these big societal changes. Closing of churches meant the closing of the services specified above. Maybe shifting further Left politically hasn't actually made life better if secularists are now complaining about higher taxes for said services...

I go car camping in my C3 Picasso for a month, twice a year. I use dog wet wipes for hygiene- they are large, strong, anti-bacterial and smell nice. One wipe does a whole body wash. Stealth camping is perfect. Residential or rural, I'm OK. You have to be considerate, though. I always leave a car park cleaner than I found it.

Interesting Doodle Pete, thank you for your unabashed honesty. One question… as you have no address how to you receive demands , and they are usually demands from bureaucratic “ Pointy Heads”. I am retired happily and remember my youth of cycling and camping ANYWHERE and no one ever stopped and told you to move on. There are too many rules which prevent us being free, for example if I have no address then pension payments would stop. Anyway, good luck and enjoy your life of freedom.

This was fun to watch. I'm so glad this works for him and that he feels free and happy. As a petite female, I wouldn't feel safe living by myself like this. Parking out somewhere with the hatch up and windows down for nice air flow, I would be worried someone would come up and try to attack me. I also would feel claustrophobic in a little van and not having space to move around. It would be like living in a little jail cell for me. The opposite of freedom. Having a vehicle I can always drive to parks and the beach and enjoy nature anytime I want. I go walking in nature everyday, ride my bike next to the river, etc. My home is paid off. I don't allow the government to make me feel trapped or controlled, I just planned ahead and now I can sit back and relax. Life is what you make it, govt or no govt. ✌🏼

You are absolutely right. Safety, security and comfort are paramount. A lot of people have way too much material things, more than is needed or could even be used though. There is something to be said about a balance of lifestyle inside a simple home. I can't imagine the complexities and stress of living in a small vehicle, there are so many variables, where to park for the night, where to go to feel welcome or simply safe, as a woman. Not in this modern world where anxious, hostile, imbalanced individuals are plentiful.

Interesting perspective and appreciated. I've worked full time since year 1998 and I'm stopping July 28th this year to do exactly what you have! Can't wait for the change. Your spot on about our future freedom, they don't want us to be free. Best wishes.

Totally understand that a house is not required to be happy. But it’s also an investment for the future when you are old and unable to work. Even if you buy a property and rent it out it’s a great way to secure a worry free retirement 🙏🏽

A lot of people will never be able to achieve this, especially the way things are now, so it is good to see people finding another path. Being in unstable rented accommodation can be very scary and I can see the appeal of being in the van.

What a nice bloke, love the van. I hope I can express such self care in about 15 years when the kids have grown.

This guy is so wholesome and makes a lot of valid points. Wish I had the guts to do the same... Also love the Northern accent and how the bobble hat goes with the van! 💕

I did consider a bongo for some time but the prices kept rising and as a Londinier needed a euro 6. We all get what we need if we work at it. Respect to this lovely man and yourselves as excellent video hosts, ❤.

@petethedoodler @petethedoodler Pete, I thourally enjoyed this, it was even quite emotional for me as I've been through the same, feel & do as you do. It struck a cord in how I am. You're one of the good guys Pete & I hope others can join our ways in making the world a better place. You take care my friend, I would sincerely hope our paths would cross one day & we get the chance to chat over a brew or two. For now, all the very very best.

We are redoing the van right now to live in it for awhile. Years ago I bought a bio lite camping stove. Never used it once but I thought it was so cool. It’s a grill but you power it with sticks. Suppose to be used in poverty areas to power things and create heat plus a stove. Anyway I was intrigued by it because it has a charger port to charge things when it’s lit because it creates power. Think maybe I’ll actually use it now 😂.
